Who has the mind power to make it all the way through the rounds and end up at this ` the Brain Buster? - King Mikey Falesiu at your service. I hope today's top two players got their game face on, because the Brain Buster is legit. So get ready, because it's about to go down! - It sure is, Mikey. And don't forget, you can play from home as well. So, let's meet today's Brain Busters. Captions by Ellen Sinclair. Captions were made with the support of NZ On Air. www.able.co.nz Copyright Able 2020 Nau mai, haere mai, and welcome to Brain Busters. Today, we have four players hoping they've got what it takes to be called the ultimate Brain Buster. They'll start with their specialist subject rounds, where they'll hope to get enough points to stay in this game and avoid elimination. So, let's meet our players now. Firstly, Namiko. Lovely to have you on the show. Now, if going to school five days a week wasn't already enough, you also go to Japanese school, is that right? - Yeah. - So can you tell us a little bit about that? - We learn Japanese, obviously, and we also learn some math and social studies. - Wow. Awesome stuff. Best of luck to you on Brain Busters, Namiko. - Thank you. - Sami, welcome to the show. Football player, play for a fantastic club as well, Halswell United. What do you love about football? - Just how creative it can be. - Yeah. How's the season going as well? - We're doing good. - Nice to hear. Let's see if you can continue that through Brain Busters. Morvern, I heard you're a musician and a songwriter. - Yes, I play guitar and I'm learning piano, and I sing too. - Awesome. And am I right in saying you've actually written a little something you want to share? - I've got it just here. - Oh, please do! - It says, 'Kia ora, haere mai, here up at Brain Busters. 'Illuminated light bulbs are modelling striking lustre. 'Electric blue, lightning hue, and this bliss Chris set the scene. 'Whoever conquers this round will be the ultimate queen. 'Why, hooray. Let's row our waka to the start of this show.' - Oh! (CLAPS) That is awesome! Morvern, thank you so much for sharing that with us. That is very cool. And finally, we have Daniel. Daniel, thanks for coming on the show today. What do we get up to when we're not at school? - I play the violin. - How long you been learning violin for, Daniel? - I started just early this year. - Nice, so making our way through it. We're really enjoying it? - Yeah, it's been pretty fun. Not very good at the moment, but I'm getting there. - All about practice. Practice makes perfect. Thank you so much, everyone, for coming on the show. Great line-up indeed. So let's get into our first round of the day. It's Mega Memory. As always, 90 seconds on the clock. 10 points if you buzz in and get it right. Buzz in and get it wrong, though, you will lose 10 points. Best of luck. Your time starts now. Which New Zealand city holds the record for the world's steepest street? Namiko. - Dunedin. - (DING!) - In international netball, how long is one quarter? Sami. - 15. - (BEEP!) - 15 minutes. - (DING!) - Thank you, Sami. Alternating current and direct current are both types of what? Morvern. - Electricity. - (DING!) - In the Hunger Games movies, which character is played by Jennifer Lawrence? Daniel. - Katniss Everdeen. - (DING!) - In the nursery rhyme, Humpty Dumpty sat on a what? Daniel. - Wall. - (DING!) - In which Dr Suess book are truffula trees chopped down? Daniel. - Pi. - (DING!) - How many members are in The Incredibles family? Sami. - Five. - (DING!) - So, does conclude our Mega Memory round. Thank you all for playing. Let's take a look at the leader board. Daniel has the lead with 50 points, Namiko has 20 points. Sami also has 20 points, then Morvern has 10 points. So now we move into our specialist subject rounds, and starting us off today is Morvern. What have you chosen to play? - Spellbinder. - Thank you very much. Let's play Spellbinder. Morvern, please step forward. (TENSE MUSIC) OK, Morvern, here's something I've been working on. Morvern is here, ready to play. Let's see if she can stay. We're gonna test if Morvern can spell. Let's see just how well. Huh? Yeah? - Oh, I'm impressed. Very impressed. - You're impressed? - Yes. - I mean, nothing compared to yours, Morvern, but, still, I'm pretty proud of myself for that one. All right. Let's get into Spellbinder now. 20 points for every word you spell correct, Morvern. Best of luck. Your first word is optional. - (DING!) Correct. Requirements. - (DING!) Well done. Pioneer. - (DING!) Nice job. Ominous. - (DING!) Great job. Axolotl. - Could I have it in a sentence, please? - The axolotl is also known as the Mexican walking fish. - (BUZZ!) A-X-O-L-O-T-L for axolotl. Your final word... verify. - (DING!) - Well done, Morvern. Thank you very much for playing Spellbinder. Morvern has taken the lead with 110 points. Daniel is on 50 points, Namiko has 20 points, and Sami has 20 points. So next to play is Namiko. And what have you chosen, Namiko? - Equaliser. - Thank you very much. Let's play Equaliser. Namiko, please step forward. (TENSE MUSIC) How we feeling, Namiko? - Nervous but excited. - Ready to get into it? - Yes. - 20 points for each correct equation. Best of luck to you. Here comes that first equation. - (DING!) Correct! - (BUZZ!) 6. - (BUZZ) 12.5 Finally ` - (BUZZ!) 65. And that is Equaliser done and dusted. Namiko, some really tricky equations in there, but you gave your best shot and that is all that matters. Thank you so much for playing. Morvern still has the lead with 110 points. Daniel is on 50 points, Namiko has 40 points, and Sami has 20 points. So, halfway through our specialist subject rounds and all of our players are wondering and wanting to be the ones to get through to the Brain Buster. - It's about to go down for our final two players. Will they be able to handle the heat? Can't wait to find out. - You and me both, Mikey. And don't forget, you can play from home as well. Simply head online to HEIHEI Games. Don't go anywhere. We'll be right back a muri I te whakata. Simply head online to HEIHEI Games. Don't go anywhere. We'll be right back a muri I te whakata. * - Nau mau, hoki mai, and welcome back to Brain Busters. Just before the break, we had Morvern and Namiko take on their specialist subject rounds, and next to play in Sami. So, Sami, what have you chosen? - Sequencer. - Thank you very much. Let's play Sequencer. Sami, please step forward. (TENSE MUSIC) Why did we pick Sequencer, Sami? - 'Cause I really like history and stuff, so I guessed it'd be good for me. - Makes sense to me, Sami. Best of luck. 20 points for each correct sequence. Here comes your first one. Arrange these creatures in order of most legs to least. 20 points right away for Sami. Place, in order of completion, the three sports that make up the Olympic triathlon. Swim, bike, run. Well done, Sami. In what order did these wars take place? Sami proving he likes history there. List these North Island towns from east to west. A lot of swapping going 'round, is that the right order though? Just swap those two around, would have been right there. In what order were these businesses first logos introduced? Again, just needed to have it swapped 'round the other way and we would've been right. In which order were these New Zealand political parties formed? Final Sequencer answer. Labour, then Green Party and finally, Act. And just like that, Sequencer is done and dusted. Thank you so much for playing, Sami. Morvern still has the lead with 110 points. Sami now has 80 points, Daniel is on 50 points, and Namiko has 40 points. So, just one more player remaining to take on their specialist subject round, and that player is Daniel. What have you chosen to play, Daniel? - Identifier. - Thank you very much. Let's play Identifier. Daniel, please step forward. (TENSE MUSIC) How did you feel you went after Mega Memory, Daniel? - I think I did well. I think I just got enough points to put me in the lead, if I do well in this. - Excellent, that's what I like to hear. Yeah, fantastic job, 50 points. Lets see if we can continue that winning form. Here comes your first Identifier. Correct. Well played. Happy with the order given, but wasn't quite correct. Lake Wanaka, and then Lake Rotorua. Looks good to me. Nice work, Daniel. Forest, then canopy, then emergent. Lastly ` That'll be correct. Daniel, thank you very much for playing Identifier. So, Daniel has now completed his specialist subject round, but has he done enough to reclaim top spot? Let's take a look. Daniel has 130 points. Morvern is on 110 points, Sami has 80 points, and Namiko has 40 points. So we do now need to eliminate our first player today on Brain Busters. And Namiko, unfortunately, that is you. Thank you so much for coming on to the show. Not going home empty-handed either, a $100 bank account is all yours, Namiko. So, what are you going to do with that money? - I'll probably save it, I think, yeah. - Good way to think about it, Namiko. Thank you so much for coming onto the show. And congratulations to our three remaining players. It's just one step closer to the Brain Buster. - With only three players left, go time is just around the corner. I can't wait to see who our final two will be. I hope they're ready, Chris. - They definitely are, Mikey. And before we can get to the Brain Buster, we have our Brain-Teaser. Now, our players have gone through their specialist subject rounds, and we are left with two options for our players to choose from. Today, those options are Reo Rangatira or Blueprinter. So, Sami, Morvern, and Daniel, please select which one you would like to play now. Thank you, everyone, for those votes. Let's take a look at Sami, who voted for Blueprinter. Morvern voted for Blueprinter as well. Daniel has chosen Blueprinter! Three for three. So let's play Blueprinter! 30 points if our players buzz in and get it right, but buzz in and get it wrong, our players will lose 30 points. Best of luck to you all. Let's get into our Blueprinter and see what it is. It's the Los Angeles County map. Best of luck. Your 30 seconds starts now. Los Angeles is a huge, sprawling city with some interesting and somewhat outdated rules, including one that says it is illegal to drive more than 2000 sheep down Hollywood Boulevard. Ten seconds. Five. (KLAXON) That's time. Buzz in when you think you know the correct answer. Let's see our first one now. This, please. Daniel. - West Hills. - West Hills locked in and is correct. Nicely done, Daniel. Next one, please. Sami. - Granada Hills. - Granada Hills is also correct. The third ` Sami again. - Sun Valley. - Quick to say Sun Valley. Is it right? Indeed it is. Sami again. - Santa Monica. - Santa Monica is correct. Finally ` Daniel. - Bel Air. - It is indeed Bel Air. Speedy round of Blueprinter for our Brain-Teaser. Thank you, everyone. Let's take a look now at the scores. Daniel remains at the top, with 190 points. Sami has 170 points, and Morvern has 110 points. So, Morvern, I'm sorry to say you have been eliminated from Brain Busters. A pleasure having you on the show. And of course you get to go home with a $100 bank account. So, what are you going to do with all that money, Morvern? - Most likely an experience for my family. - Oh, great choice, Morvern. Thank you so much for coming and best of luck with all the music. I can tell you are going to be amazing. Congratulations to Sami and Daniel. For them, it's onto the Brain Buster. - Who out of our two remaining players will be crowned as today's Brain Buster champion? Don't move a muscle! We'll be right back. * - The financial term for being unable to pay your debts is bankrupt, Nau mai, hoki mai, and welcome back to the show. Today, we've had four players battle it out, and now we have just two remaining, as they get ready to take on the Brain Buster. - Our top two players are ready to battle it out to see who will go through to the Amygdala. So, let's get the show on the road. Three, two, one, fly! The Brain Stem zip line brings Sami and Daniel into the Brain Buster. Only one of these two will go on to turn their points into dollars in the Amygdala. Who's it going to be? Sami looks to have an early lead as he crosses the Molecule Steps. Got his code to remember and heads into the Corpus Callosum. Daniel's just on his tail, though, as he nears the Hippocampus, where Sami is punching in that code. Success! Daniel's going to want to activate his side of the Parietal Lobe ASAP. And does! Up he goes, but Sami is already tackling that tunnel. Daniel's really got to gain momentum if he wants to catch up. Sami is full speed ahead across that Frontal Lobe. Daniel's now through the tunnel. His delay could give Sami a head start on finding the correct combination of the DNA Molecule Switches. There he goes with the first lot. Daniel is on his way to the ladder now. He's edging closer! Sami could be about to lose his lead if he's not fast here. But just as Daniel makes it to the switches, Sami activates his side of the Brain Buster, so he can now head to the Basal Ganglia. Daniel lights up his side, but I don't think he'll be catching Sami. Awesome stuff, man. You earnt it. That was a close race, Chris. - Awesome stuff. Sami, I'll get you to bring it across this way. Daniel, we'll start with you. What a race from both you guys. How much did we enjoy that? - Yeah, it was pretty fun. - Good fun. Daniel, congratulations. Second place today on Brain Busters. So, a $100 bank account is all yours. What are you going to do with that money? - Might keep it just to myself. - Save it for a rainy day? Very wise indeed. Thanks for playing, Daniel. Sami, congratulations. You are today's Brain Buster champion. Raced through it as well, and especially in that final bit. Do you think it was that competitive football spirit that helped you win today? - Yeah, definitely. - Awesome. Well, Sami, just one thing left for you to do. And of course, that is Amygdala. (TENSE MUSIC) Sami, welcome to Amygdala. That smile's been on your face the whole game, still there. How we feeling about taking on the final challenge? - Really excited. - Good to hear. So, do you wanna know how much money you're playing for? - Yeah. - All right. You scored 170 points. Daniel actually scored more points than you. 190, it was. We combine those two totals together and you are playing for $360, Sami. How much can we win? - 360. - That is the attitude we like to hear. All right, best of luck, Sami. Here comes your first question. On Sesame Street, what kind of animal is Kermit? - Uh, frog. - (DING!) - Correct. Is a muffin cooked by baking or frying? - Baking. - (DING!) - Also correct. The Waikato River runs through which New Zealand city? - Christchurch. - (BUZZ!) - Hamilton is the answer. Beijing is the capital of which country? - China. - (DING!) - Correct. Which variety of summer squash and in the gourd family is also called a courgette? - Oh... WHISPERS: Oh, what is it? - On the tip of your tongue. - I'll just give a guess, squash. - (BUZZ!) - Yeah, not squash, it is a zucchini. - Oh. Oh, yeah. - Make sense? Next up, what is the chemical symbol for hydrogen? - H. - Straightaway, locking it in. - (DING!) - Yes it is. The lead character in the 2011 animated movie Puss in Boots first appeared in what film franchise? - Shrek. Is it...? - Do you think it might be something else? - No. - Confident with Shrek? - (DING!) And Shrek is right. Which popular artist has a daughter named Blue Ivy? - Taylor Swift. - Taylor Swift. - Just a guess. - (BUZZ!) - No, we're after the queen of pop herself, Beyonce. The Mercator projection is usually found on what type of document? - Don't know. Pass, I guess. - Don't wanna give this one a guess? - Space. - (BUZZ!) - Unfortunately, not correct there. Map was the answer. One to go, Sami. Which is typically longer, a sentence or a chapter? - A chapter. - Final answer. - Yeah. - This one will take us past $200 as well. Done very well. Can we get the final Amygdala question right? - (DING!) Sami, sure can. Let's take a look at the board, and $216 is all yours, Sami. Congratulations. What are you going to do with the money? - Um, probably buy some electronic like a tablet or another PC, so. - Awesome choice, Sami. Well-deserved as well. Thank you so much for playing and congratulations! $216! - And remember, if you think you can be crowned as a Brain Buster champion, jump online and head to HEIHEI Games. - Thank you so much for joining us.
