Captions were made with the support of NZ On Air. www.able.co.nz Copyright Able 2020 Nau mai, haere mai, and welcome to Brain Busters. Today we have four players hoping they've got what it takes to be called the ultimate Brain Buster. We'll start with Mega Memory before we move into our specialist subject rounds, where players can choose from six of our options. They'll hope to gain enough points to stay in this game and avoid elimination. So let's meet our players now. Firstly, Oren, welcome to the show. - Hi. - I hear you're right into your Maths. What do you love about Maths, Oren? - Lots of people believe that just Maths is about number crunching and remembering things and equations, that I believe that it's a lot more than that, and I enjoy finding the reasoning when I study. - What a great answer. And we're very lucky to have you here on the show, Oren. Can't wait to get into a specialist subject round. I think I know which one you'll be doing. Next up, Sam. Welcome to the show. What do you like to do in your spare time, Sam? - I like to play rugby. - Favourite player? - Richie McCaw. - Can't go wrong with good old Richie McCaw, can ya? - Yeah. - All Black one day? - Uh, maybe, maybe. - The dream! And from All Blacks to Silver Ferns, Skylah, you're right into your netball. - Yeah. - Yeah. What position do we play? - I play goal attack and centre. - Favourite Silver Fern? - Um, Amelia Ekenasio. - Pretty handy. Reckon you can take out Brain Busters today? - Hopefully. (CHUCKLES) - Let's see! And finally we have Nishtha. Great to have you on the show. What do you like to do when you're not at school, Nishtha? - I'm a junior black belt in taekwondo, so I love to train, and I've been doing it for five years. - Wow. So don't mess with Nishtha. All right. Let's get straight into it. Great having you all here. Time for our first round of the day ` it's Mega Memory. As always, 90 seconds on the clock. Let's get straight into Mega Memory. Your time starts now. The keys on a piano are usually black and what other colour? (TIMER BLARES, BUZZER) Diamond was the answer to our final Mega Memory question. Epic round, guys, really well done. So let's take a look now at the leaderboard. Sam has the lead with 50 points. Nishtha has 30 points Oren has 20 points, and Skylah also has 20 points. So let's now move into our specialist subject rounds. Starting us off today is Oren. So what have you chosen to play? - Identifier. - Thank you very much, Oren. Let's play Identifier. Oren, please step forward. So love your Maths. I thought you were going to go Equalise, but proving you got many talents. Chosen Identifier. - Yep. - Ready to get into it? - Yeah. - All right. Best of luck. Chocolate bar, fish, cabbage ` order these foods by the servings that should be eaten in a healthy diet from most to least. (THOUGHTFUL MUSIC) And we're off to a great start. Nice work, Oren. Identify the three acids commonly found in a science lab. Let's get back on track. Can we see three green? And indeed. Identify three stages of the water cycle. Taking our time for that third one. Was that the right choice to make? - I hope so. - Yes, it was, Oren. Fiordland, Rakiura/Stewart Island, Abel Tasman ` arrange these New Zealand national parks in order from smallest area to largest. All absolutely gorgeous national parks. Is that the order Oren wants? Missed out there, sorry. Oxygen, carbon, hydrogen ` arrange these elements in order of atomic number from lowest to highest. Well played, Oren. Finally for Identifier, eliminate the three chemical reactions. Can we finish strong? Absolutely. Oren, great job. Thank you so much for playing Identifier. - Thank you. - You could take a step back to your podium. Oren jumps into the lead with 120 points. Sam has 50 points, Nishtha has 30 points, and Skylar is on 20 points. So it's time for our second player now come forward and take on their specialist subject round. That player is Skylah. What would you like to play? - Reo Rangatira. - Thank you very much. Let's play Reo Rangatira. Skylah, please step forward. (TENSE MUSIC) Brain Busters champion or being a Silver Fern, what would you choose? - Uh, being a Silver Fern. - That's a fair answer. That's in the future, though. Let's focus on becoming a Brain Busters champion right now, though, as we get into Reo Rangatira. Best of luck, Skylah. Here we go. In Maori, what is the word for below and under? - Ki raro, ki runga. - Correct. Please spell Kaiapoi. - K-A-I-A-P-O-I. - Ka pai. What type of competition is Iron Maori? - Whakataitai. (BUZZER) - Sorry, it was an Ironman. What is a Maori word or beautiful? - Ataahua. - Well done. What is a Maori word for text, as in send a text on the phone? - Patu patu. - Correct. Please spell 'tena koutou'. - T-E-N-A K-O-U-T-O-U. - Ae, that is correct. Well done, Skylah. Thank you so much for playing Reo Rangatira. Oren has 120 points. Skylah also has 120 points. Then we have Sam on 50 and Nishtha on 30. So a very interesting start to the show indeed. All of our players, though, are wondering if they're going to be able to head to the Brain Buster. - Two out of our four players will make it through to the Brain Buster. Will they be prepped and ready for the ultimate obstacle course? We'll find out soon. Kia ora, Mikey. And don't forget, you can play from home. Just head online to Heihei Games. Don't go anywhere. We'll see you a muri i te whakata. (ELECTRONIC POP MUSIC) * Nau mai hoki mai, and welcome back to Brain Busters. Just before the break, we had Oren and Skylah take on their specialist subject rounds. And playing next is Nishtha. So what have you chosen to play? - Spellbinder. - Thank you very much. Let's play Spellbinder. Nishtha, please step forward. All right, how we feeling Nishtha? Currently in that elimination spot. Are we going to able to get out of it? - Oh, yeah. - Confident? - Yes. - Good to hear it. Let's get into Spellbinder. First word is coming your way. Average. That is correct. Hatchery E-R-Y, I'm sorry, Nishtha. Cafeteria. Nicely spelled. Attached. Awesome. Karaoke. Good job. Frivolous. Quick spelling indeed. Your final word is horizon. Well done! Just one letter is all that stopped you from getting a perfect score. Still should be very, very happy indeed. Nishtha, thank you so much for playing Spellbinder. - Thank you. - Nishtha has avoided elimination, now sitting in first place with 150 points. Oran has 120 points, Skylah has one 120 points as well. And then we have Sam on 50 points. So we just have one more player remaining to take on their specialist subject round, and that player is Sam. What have you chosen to play? - Blueprinter. - Thank you very much, Sam. Let's play Blueprinter. Sam, please step forward. In true All Blacks style, you were first place after Mega Memory. The question is, can we get back there? - Yep. - You reckon, Sam? - Yeah. - All right, best of luck. 30 seconds to have a look at what the Blueprinter is today. 30 more seconds to put in your answers. So here comes your Blueprinter. Mount Rushmore. Best of luck. Your time starts now. Nestled in the hills of South Dakota is one of America's most famous landmarks. Carved into the mountain are the faces of four presidents ` Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt and Lincoln. The stone monuments attract over three million visitors a year. 10 seconds, Sam. (TENSE MUSIC) That's time. Sam, you'll now have 30 seconds to put in your answers, and that time starts now. (TENSE MUSIC) Halfway. (TIMER BLARES) So, unfortunately, you ran out of time to chuck that last one in there, Sam, but still six are there, so fingers crossed, and let's hope we can get them all. First one. Carver's Cafe is correct. Lincoln Park also correct. Heritage Village makes three. Washington Car Park makes it four. Compressor House is five. Really good stuff here, Sam. Avenue of Flags is six! So if it was six out of six, you'd have a perfect score. Unfortunately, just missing the one, but really well done, Sam. Great job, and thank you for playing Blueprinter. Amazing effort there from Sam. What would have happened if he was able to put that seventh one in? We'll never know. But in the meantime, let's take a look at the scores. Sam takes back that lead now sitting on 170 points. Nishtha has 150 points, Oren has 120 points and Skylah also has 120 points. So really, really impressive stuff after our specialist subject rounds. And as you can see, we have a tie between Oren and Skylah. So now we go to our sudden death tie-breaker round, and it will just be the two of you playing this round. I will ask a question, the first person to buzz in and give me the correct answer will go through to the Brain Teaser. If you give me the incorrect answer, though, your opponent will go through. Best of luck to both of you. He comes our tie-breaker question. Is cinnamon a rice or a spice? - Spice. - That is the correct answer. Very quick on to that buzzer. You are through to the Brain Teaser. Oren, I'm sorry to say, you have been eliminated from Brain Busters. Should be super happy, though. Going out on 120 points in the first round is very impressive. A $100 bank account is also yours, Oren. What are you doing with the money? - Saving it. - Very smart decision. Thank you so much for coming on to the show, and congratulations to our three remaining players. It's one step closer to the Brain Buster. - With only three players left, go-time is just around the corner. Can't wait to see who our final two will be. I hope they're ready! - You and me both, Mikey. And to help decide who will be going through, we have our Brain Teaser. Now, all of our players today have gone through their specialist subject rounds, and we are left with two options for our players to choose from. Today those options are Equaliser and Sequencer. So, Sam, Skylah and Nishtha, please select which one you would like to play now. Thank you everyone for voting. We'll start with Sam, who would like to play... Equaliser. Skylar has chosen... Sequencer, so it all comes down to Nishtha, who has voted for Sequencer. Here we go. Let's play Sequencer. It's already been a very impressive show of Brain Busters today. How many points can they add to their scores now? Let's find out in the Brain Teaser. Best of luck. Here comes your first sequence. Arrange these technologies by their invention from earliest to most recent. Nishtha. Needed to swap around television and computer, I'm sorry, Nishtha. In which order were these animated movies released? Nishtha. Nishtha would like her points back. But is unable to get them. Arrange these music genres into the order they became popular from the earliest to most recent. (BUZZER BLARES) No answer there. That does end our Brain Teaser. Thank you all very much for playing. Let's take a look now at the scores. Sam has 170 points. Skylah has 130 points, in Nishtha has 90 points. So, unfortunately, I'm sorry to say you have been eliminated from Brain Busters. Thank you so much for playing. You are going home with $100 bank account. So what will you be doing with that money, Nishtha? - I think I'll save it until I want to buy something. - Very wise indeed. Thank you so much, Nishtha, for coming onto the show. And congratulations to Sam and to Skylah. For them, it's onto the Brain Buster. - Who out of our two remaining players will be today's Brain Buster champion? Don't move a muscle. We'll be right back. Don't move a muscle. We'll be right back. * - Nau mai, hoki mai. Welcome back to Brain Busters. Our players have been battling it out, and now it's time for the big one ` the Brain Buster. - Skylah and Sam are our final two players who are ready to take on the Brain Buster. You guys set? Awesome. Here we go. Three, two, one, fly. Ooh, it's the Silver Ferns versus the All Blacks in the Brain Buster. Aspiring Silver Fern Skylah takes on aspiring All Black Sam. Some lofty goals for these two. But if they can make it through the Brain Buster, there'll be no stopping them. Both our sporty players cross the Molecule Steps and get cracking into the Corpus Callosum. Were they able to memorise their four-digit codes for the Hippocampus Console? There's Sam's and... there's Skylah's. It's too tough to call at this point. Will the netballer or the rugby player take the lead as they climb the Parietal Lobe? I think they both made it up. Yes, let's not forget, this is all about who's going through to the Amygdala. Only one will be able to turn their points into dollars, and neither of these two are going down without a fight. Uh-oh, Sam's lost his balance. Can he hold on? Come on, pull yourself up. Yes! Oh, that slip-up cost him big time. Skylah's flipped the switch and is sprinting for the finish line. Sam with an amazingly fast recovery, but today, the Brain Buster goes to Skylah. Keep it going, Sam. Nice work. Finish it up. What a race! There we go. Sam, we'll start with you. Awesome job. It was neck and neck there. And then you head the wee slip. Great recovery, might I add. What was going through your head at that point? - Ugh, I was like, 'I'm going to lose this one now.' (CHUCKLES) Still, you pulled through. You had a great effort and you were so, so close. Second place today for Brain Busters, so congratulations on that. A $100 bank account is all yours. What are you going to do that money, Sam? - I'm going to save it. - Nice, very wise decision, Sam. Cheers for coming on to the show. Skylah, congratulations. It was a Silver Ferns vs the All Blacks there. The Silver Ferns coming out on top. You've won Brain Busters today. You were racing across as well. What was going through your head? - (CHUCKLES) I just really wanted to win. - And it showed, and now here you are. So congratulations. One more thing for Skylah to do, and that is, of course, Amygdala. The future Silver Fern has made it to Amygdala. Skylah, welcome. Great to have you here. So you are officially the Brain Buster champion, so we can tick that one off the list. Next on the card is, of course, becoming that Silver Fern, not before we win you a whole lot of money, right? So, you're playing for $300, after scoring yourself 130 points. Sam, who went up against, in the Brain Buster actually scored 170 points. So you get to take all those points away from him, meaning that you are playing for that total of $300. Great job. Let's get into it. How many days in a typical year? - 356. (GROANS) - Needed to swap it round. 365. What is the country of origin for the pop group ABBA? - United Kingdom. Sorry, it was Sweden. Which body part is used most when playing the piano? - Fingers. - It definitely is. Nicely done. The Waikato River flows through which North Island city? - I'm just gonna go with Hamilton. Like I always say, always worth the guess. Locking in Hamilton. Gotta be confident. Cos sometimes you just might get it right. Well done. What does kakariki mean in English? - Green. Yes. Nicely done, Skylah. What is the largest animal in the world? - Blue whale. - Largest animal in the world. They can get pretty big. Is there something that beats the blue whale, though? No, there isn't. Yes, of course, it is blue whale. Not only the biggest living animal, also the largest animal to have ever existed on Earth. How many train stations are on an English Monopoly board? - Four. - Play Monopoly at home? - Yeah. - Does it end in tears or is it a happy family? - Uh, I think it ends up... yeah, in tears. - That's always the case, isn't it? You think there's four train stations on an English Monopoly board? Played a lot at home. You are correct. New Zealand's Interislander Ferry travels between which two islands? - Rangitoto and Waiheke. I think you might be kicking yourself when I say this answer. It's just the North Island and the South Island. - (SCOFFS) Oh my gosh. - (CHUCKLES) All right. One more to go. In which 2019 movie does King Mufasa have an evil brother called Scar? - The Lion King. Final question Amygdala question. Is our answer The Lion King? (DING!) Yes, indeed, it is, Skylah. Great job. As we take a look, you've won $180. Well played. Skylah. What are you going to do with that money? - I'll probably save it or go on a day with my friends. - Yeah. Both great options. Congratulations, Skylah. $180! - Whoo-hoo! Well done, Skylah. I'm sure you're happy with that performance, yeah? - Yeah, I'm pretty stoked. - Awesome. You should be. If you think you can take on the Brain Buster, just like our girl Skylah, jump online to Heihei Games. - Thank you so much for joining us today. Until next time, that's it for Brain Busters. www.able.co.nz Copyright Able 2020 Thank you, New Zealand On Air.
