- Hip hop to history; maths to memory. We start with four, but in the end you can be only one. - Chilling out with your boy, Mikey Falesiu. Are today's top two, ready to take on the ultimate obstacle course? I hope they are, because it's about to go down. Let's go! - Let's go, Mikey. And don't forget, you can play from home as well. So, let's meet today's Brain Busters! Captions by Joshua Tait Captions were made with the support of NZ On Air. www.able.co.nz Copyright Able 2020 Nau mai, haere mai, and welcome to Brain Busters. Today, we have four players hoping they've got what it takes to be called the ultimate brain buster. We'll start with Mega Memory, before we make our way into our specialist subject rounds where our players can choose from six of their options today. They'll hope to gain enough points to stay in this game and avoid elimination. So let's meet those players now. Firstly, Poppy, welcome to Brain Busters. - Thank you. What are we looking forward to most on the show? - Honestly? - Absolutely honestly. - The money. - (LAUGHS) Fair enough. Honesty's the best policy on Brain Busters. As long as you're enjoying it, that's the main thing. Charles, great to have you here on the show. You have four chickens right in the heart of Auckland. - Yeah. - Why? - Eggs? - Free eggs. - Free eggs. - What` How do we like our eggs? - I like my soft-boiled with some toast, but everybody likes it differently. - Delicious, Charles. Good luck to you on Brain Busters. Sophia, welcome along to the show. You're right into your dancing and ballet, and I hear you looking forward to being famous after coming on the show. - Absolutely. - Do we need to do a shout out to any of the Insta-Twitter-Facebooker-follower thingies? - Um, just to me. - (GUFFAWS) Shout out to Sophia. And we also have Will. Great to have you on the show, Will. Right into your surfing and skateboarding. - Yep. - Best place to go surfing? - Omaha and Tawharanui are really good spots ` up north. - And some good waves. All right. Can he make waves here on the show though? Let's find out. All right. Good luck to all of you. It's time to get into our first round of the day. It's Mega Memory. Let's not waste any time ` straight into it now, 90 seconds on the clock. Good luck to each and every one of you. Your time starts now. Is Yves Saint Laurent an explorer or a fashion label? Sophia. - Fashion label. - What is the largest non-polar in the world? Sophia. - Antarctica. - Sahara Desert. What is the name of the spiced sweet bun commonly eaten around Easter? Poppy. - Hot cross cinnamon roll. Hot cross roll. Hot cross bun! - (SIGHS) Got there in the end. Is Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Monaco or Malaysia? Will. - Monaco. - Malaysia. What is the highest peak in Europe? Sofia. - Mount Everest. - Mt Blanc. Is the Wairarapa district in the North or South Island? - North? - Charles. In the Harry Potter movies, who played the part of Ron Weasley? Poppy. - Rupert Grint. - In the movie Cars, what is the name of the tow truck that Lightning McQueen befriends? Charles? - Tow Mater. - Just in time there, Charles, well done. Thank you all for playing Mega Memory. Let's take a look now at that leaderboard. It's Poppy and Charles at the top, both with 20 points. Then we have Sophia and Will, both on zero points. So now we move into our specialist subject rounds. And our first player starting today is Sophia. So, what would you like to play? - Sequencer. - Thank you very much, Sophia. Let's play Sequencer. Sophia, please step forward. (TENSE MUSIC) First up, no easy task. Ready to take it on though? - Yep. - Good to hear. Let's get into it. Arrange these New Zealand movies in order from first released to most recent. We're looking to get some points on the board for Sophia. That will do it. In what order with these games first released from earliest to most recent. Ever played tiddlywinks before, Sophia? - No. Fantastic game. That is a fantastic order as well. In what order were these US presidents in office? Had it round the wrong way there, Sophia. Swapped it and you would have been right. Put these cities in the order they last hosted the Olympics, earliest to most recent. Fan of the Olympics, Sophia? - Yeah. - Always good to watch. You got the order right. In what order did these events of the Victorian era occur. from the earliest to most recent? Very well done there, Sophia. Finally ` arrange, these modes of transport and order of invention. Last one for Sequencer. Was gonna move passenger jet into the middle. You decided to keep it at the end. Is that the right thing to do? Yes, it was. Very well played, Sophia. Thank you very much for taking on Sequencer. Sophia now has the lead with 100 points. Poppy has 20 points. Charles has 20 points, and Will is on zero points. So time now for a second player to take on their specialist subject round. That player is Will. What would you like to play? - Spellbinder. - Thank you very much, Will. Let's play Spellbinder. Will, please step forward. (TENSE MUSIC) Surfing, skateboarding, now spelling. Ready to take on the challenge? - Yeah. - Let's do it. First word coming your way. Please spell ` Estate. Correct. Robotic. Well done. Phonics. That is correct. Supreme. Good stuff here. Acquired. Needed a Q before that U, sorry, Will. Finally, please spell ` angler. That is how you spell angler. Well done, Will. Started off really great, a little bit shaky in the middle, came home strong, and that's what we're after. Well done. Thank you for taking on Spellbinder. - Thank you. - Sophia now joins Will at the top of the table on 100 points each. Poppy has 20 points and Charles has 20 points. So those scores at the top of the table could be very interesting in a wee while. But in the meantime, all of our players are wondering if they've got what it takes to head to the Brain Buster. - Getting closer to that time where our top two players will go head-to-head to be crowned as today's champion. I hope they've been doing some training because, uh, you don't want to mess with this beast. - No, you don't, Mikey, but you definitely want to play at home, simply head online to Hei Hei Games. Don't go anywhere. We'll be right back i muri i te whakata. * Nau mai hoki mai, and welcome back to Brain Busters. Just before the break, we had Sophia and Will take on their specialist subject rounds. And coming up to the front next is Poppy. So, what would you like to play, Poppy? - Equaliser. - Thank you very much. Let's play Equaliser. Poppy, please step forward. (TENSE MUSIC) So we're here for the money. How much do we want to win, Poppy? - As much as possible. - That's the spirit. Let's get into Equaliser now. 20 points for each equation you get correct. Very close there. I think there were a couple more you should have got there as well, Poppy. Still, great having you up the front. Thank you very much for taking on Equaliser. - Thank you for having me. - Sophia and Will are still at the top with 100 points each. Poppy now moves into second place with 40 points. Then we have Charles on 20 points. So it's just one player remaining to take on their specialist subject round, and that player is Charles. What would you like to play, Charles? - Identifier. Thank you very much. Let's play identifier. Charles, please step forward. (TENSE MUSIC) Why did the chicken cross the road, Charles? - I still don't know. - To see if they can win Brain Busters. Anything? - Uh,... you might want to improve on your jokes. - Noted, Charles. Well, let's not waste any time. Moving on to Identifier now. LAUGHS: First one coming your way. Well done, Charles. Which three of these words are parts of the water cycle? Charles double-checking that one ` make sure he's got it all right. And he does. Identify the three creatures that are native to New Zealand. More confident with this one, Charles. - Yes. Well played. How are you with your moon phases, Charles? - Not great. - Fingers crossed. Yeah, couldn't go right there. Crescent first, then full moon, finally waning gibbous. Identify three main types of radiation. Needed to swap out Radium for Beta. Finally, Charles, ` Our final question. And you've done it, Charles. Well done. Happy with that? - Yes. - Yeah, you've really played well there. Thank you so much for taking on Identifier. You can take a step back to your podium. Charles has done 'egg-ceptional', if I may say so myself. So, with that being said, let's take a look at the leaderboard. Charles joins the party at the top with him, Sophia and Will all on 100 points. And then we have Poppy on 40 points. So, we do need to eliminate our first player today on Brain Busters. And I'm sorry to say that is you, Poppy. You came here for the money, and that's exactly what you're walking away with ` a $100 bank account is all yours. So what would you like to do with it, Poppy? - Just keep it. - Save it for a rainy day? - Just, you know, like knowing that it's there. - Always good to have it there. Thank you so much for coming on to the show, Poppy, and congratulations for our three remaining players. For them, it's one step closer to the Brain Buster. - With only three players, go time is just around the corner. Can't wait to see who our final two will be. I hope they're ready. - They're definitely ready, Mikey, and they're also ready for our Brainteaser, which is what we're getting into right now. All of our players have gone through their specialist subject rounds, and we are left with two options for our players to choose from. Today, those options are Reo Rangatira and Blueprinter. So, Charles, Sophia and Will, please select which one you would like to play now. Thank you, everyone, for voting. We'll start with Charles, who has selected... Blueprinter. Sophia would like to play... Blueprinter as well. And Will would like to play... Blueprinter. There you have it. Let's play Blueprinter. We are all tied up. Who will take the risk and who will get the reward? Let's find out as we go in to our Blueprinter for the Brainteaser. You have 30 seconds to take a look at today's Blueprinter, and then you'll have to buzz in to give me your answers after that. Let's get into it now and take a look at our Blueprinter. It's the Antarctic Centre. The very best of luck to each of you. Your time starts now. The closest thing outside the real deal. Visiting the Antarctic centre is a great way to learn about the frozen continent. You'll be able to see penguins and huskies, learn about Scott Base and go on a Hagglund ride. 10 seconds left. (KLAXON WAILS) That's time. All right, please buzz in when you think you know the answer for Blueprinter. Here's your first one. Charles. - Penguin Rescue. - Penguin Rescue is correct. Charles takes the sole lead. Next one ` Charles, again. - 4D Theatre. - It is also the 4D Theatre. Here's your third ` Will. - Frozen Continent. - Frozen Continent is correct. Next. Will, again. - Storm Dome. - It is the Storm Dome. And your last one. Charles. - Antarctic Gallery. - It sure is the Antarctic Gallery. Well played for our Brainteaser. Thank you all for taking it on. Let's take a look at our final leaderboard. After a great game, it's Charles in first place with 190 points. Will has 160 points, and Sophia has 100 points. Sophia, they just didn't let you buzz in, so unfortunately, you have been eliminated from Brain Busters. Thank you so much for coming on to the show. You receive a $100 bank account. So, what will you be doing with that money, Sophia? - Well, my dad said I had to buy him a birthday present, so I'm thinking pink fluffy socks. - Excellent choice, Sophia. Thank you so much for coming on. And congratulations to Charles and Will. For them, it's now on to the Brain Buster. - The ultimate obstacle course where top two players will battle it out to see who will be crowned as today's Brain Buster champion. Stay right there. It all goes down very soon. * Hoki mai ano. We've gone through Mega Memory, our specialist subject rounds, the Brainteaser, and now it's time for the big one ` the Brain Buster! - Will and Charles are our final two players, and it looks like they've got their game face ready. What a tough battle that was. It was neck and neck that whole way. Then just got lost on that last wee bit there. Thoughts. - Yeah. It was a good race. Just at the end I got scoffed. - Yeah, unlucky. Still great battle. And you get to go home with a $100 bank account, Will. So, what will you be doing with that money? - Probably put it towards a new surfboard. - Yeah. All the best going out there on those waves, my friend. Congratulations. Charles, you've taken it out. Like I said to Will ` very, very close. What was going through your head when you were both trying to get that last wee bit? - Um, I said I was going to beat him before and I knew I had to stick to my word. - (LAUGHS) There we have it. Well done. Charles, for you, it's not over yet. One thing left to do and that is taking on Amygdala. Well, count your lucky chickens, Charles, you've made it to the Amygdala. How does it feel? - Pretty good. Your jokes are still pretty bad though. - (GUFFAWS) - Thanks for that (!) Speaking of the chickens though, I'm sure they'll be pretty impressed that you've made it all the way here. - Yeah. - Watching from home, will they be? - Probably not, to be completely honest, but I'll let them know how I went. - Good to hear. All right. Well, let's get into it now, Charles. You scored 190 points. Brilliant effort today. Will, who you went up against in a very close battle on that Brain Buster, scored 160 points. So you're playing for $350. Best of luck. Let's get into it. From the movie The Wizard of Oz, complete the song title ` Somewhere Over the... - Rainbow. Not wasting time there. Rainbow is correct. The correct answer was long jump. What two words mean 'be well, hello, cheers, good luck, best wishes' in Maori? - Kia ora? - Definitely is. Well done. Kia ora.
