Four players. Three rounds. Two players race. One winner takes it all. Kia ora. I'm Chris Kirk, and this is Brain Busters. Get ready for a series of escalating rounds where we test our players on maths, memory, te reo, spelling and more, before it all leads up to this ` the Brain Buster. - Malo e lelei. It's the one and only Mikey Falesiu. Let's hope our top two contestants are up for today's challenge, because it all gets real when it comes to the ultimate obstacle course. Kia ora, Mikey. And don't forget, you can play from home as well. So let's meet today's Brain Busters. Captions by James Brown. Captions were made with the support of NZ On Air. www.able.co.nz Copyright Able 2020 Nau mau, haere mai, and welcome to Brain Busters. Today, we have four players hoping they've got what it takes to be called the ultimate Brain Buster. We'll start with Mega Memory, before moving into our specialist subject rounds, where our players can choose from six of our options. They'll hope to gain enough points to stay in this game and avoid elimination. So let's meet our players now. - Firstly, Zach, welcome to the show. Right into your cricket. - Yes, I do like cricket. - How excited are we for the season to start up? - Yeah, I'm really excited. Awesome. And if you win Brain Busters, you'd like a Nano Leaf. What's that? - So, basically, it's these cool LED lights which you put up on your wall, and they're, like, in hexagon shapes, and you can make it into any shape you want. - Oh, very flash. I like it. Awesome to have you here, Zach. - Vanessa, welcome to the show. You're currently learning Japanese. - Yes. Would you like to share some Japanese with us? - Sure. Konnichiwa, Chris. Brain Busters ga sukidesu. - And that translates to... - Hello Chris. I like Brain Busters. Oh, I'm glad you do, Vanessa. Great having you on the show. Pratham, also great to have you on the show. What do you like to do in your spare time? - Well, I play sports such as badminton and table tennis. - Yep. And I play music. I play the piano. - And when you're older, you'd like to be a heart surgeon. - Yeah. Wow. Pretty big ask. But clearly must be pretty smart, so good to see you here on Brain Busters. - Thank you. - Awesome. Sharlyn, great to have you here on the show. Now, I hear you can say the longest Maori place name. - Yeah. - Take it away. - Taumatawhakatangihangakoauau otamateaturipukakapikimaunga horonukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu. - Whoo! That was quick. Great skill as well. I like it. Awesome to have you all here. So let's get straight into the show now and play Mega Memory. Buzz in and get it correct, you've got 10 points. Buzz in and failed to do so, you will lose 10 points. As always, 90 seconds on the clock. Let's get into it. Your time starts now. Is Google's message service Tmail or Gmail? - Zach. - Gmail. Did Dickins write A Christmas Karen or A Christmas Carol? - Sharlyn. - Carol. Which sport did Sir Richard Hadlee represent New Zealand in? - (BUZZ!) - Cricket. What is the biggest country by land mass? - Sharlyn. - Russia. Shih Tzu, dachshund and Chihuahua are all breeds` - Sharlyn. - Dog. What form of transport is the penny farthing? - Zach. - A bicycle. How many times can teams substitute players in a field hockey match? - Pratham. - Two times. - Unlimited. New World and Countdown are both brands of what? - Pratham. - Supermarkets. In which continent is Switzerland located? - Sharlyn. - Europe. Which company produces the Xbox? - Sharlyn. - Um, E Games. - Microsoft. What is the name of Bella Swan's vampire boyfriend in Stephenie Meyer's Twilight? - Sharlyn. - Edward Cullen. What colour is a ripe tomato? - Zach. - Green. Red. That is time up. Thank you all for playing Mega Memory. Let's take a look at the scores. Sharlyn leads the way with 40 points. Zach has 10 points. Pratham has 10 points as well. Then we have Vanessa on zero points. So let's get into our specialist subject rounds now, and I think we should get some points on the board for Vanessa. - What would you like to play? - Spellbinder. Thank you very much, Vanessa. Let's play Spellbinder. Vanessa, please step forward. (SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC) First up. Feeling the pressure, or are we feeling good? - The pressure. - Feeling the pressure. All right, use the pressure. Channel it. Let's get into Spellbinder now. Your first word, Vanessa, is... challenge. That is definitely how you spell challenge. Your next word is align. A-L-L-I-G-N. Just the one L, sorry, Vanessa. Spell irritate. Well done. Hoarding. Excellent job. Aurora. Very well spelled. Your next is equilibrium. Just the one L, sorry, Vanessa. Your final word is splice. Well, Donna, Vanessa. Really great spelling there. Just one extra letter here or one less letter there, and that score could have a few more points. Still, you should be super happy with that. Well done. Thank you for playing Spellbinder. Vanessa now has a very tidy 100 points. Sharlyn is on 40 points. Zach has 10 points. And Pratham also has 10 points. So time now for our next player to take on the challenge, and that player is Zach. - What would you like to play, Zach? - Blueprinter, please. Thank you very much. Let's play Blueprinter. Zach, please step forward. (SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC) - How's the memory, Zach? - It can be good. - It can be good? - Yes. Might need a little bit more than just 'can' if you want to do well here in Blueprinter. So, you'll have 30 seconds to have a look at what the Blueprinter is, and then a further 30 seconds to put in your answers. Good luck, Zach. Let's see what it is. The Silk Road. Best of luck. Your time, Zach, starts now. The ancient Silk Road trade route carried all manner of goods between China and Rome. Silk went west, whilst wool, gold and silver went east. Christianity and Buddhism also travelled through the famous trade route, and it is believed to be a major cause of the 14th century Black Plague's spread into Europe. (SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC) Time up, Zach. You'll now have 30 seconds to put in your answers. That time starts now. Halfway. All the time in the world to place that last one. And there we go. Very quick straight away, Zach. Had all but one in there within the first 15 seconds. But are they in the right spot? Let's find out. First one is correct. Imperial Highway is also correct. You got the Great Wall of China. Four ` looking good. That is five. Unfortunately, couldn't get the Great Royal Road, though. And missed out again there for the final one. Still really, really well played, there, Zach. Five out of seven. Not bad. Thank you very much for taking on Blueprinter. Zach now has the lead with 110 points. Vanessa is very close behind on 100 points. Sharlyn has 40 points. And Pratham has 10 points. So, a great stat here on Brain Busters. All of our players, though, are hoping and wondering if they've got what it takes to head to that Brain Buster. - Only two out of our four players will make it through to the Brain Buster. Will they be prepped and ready for the ultimate obstacle course? Let 'em know, Chris. - They are set and ready, Mikey. Don't forget, you can play from home as well. Just hop online to Heihei Games. Don't go anywhere. We'll see you a muri i te whakata. * Nau mai, hoki mai, kia ora and welcome back to Brain Busters. Just before the break, we had Vanessa and Zach take on their specialist subject rounds. And coming forward to play their round is Pratham. So, what would you like to play? - Equaliser. - Thank you very much. Let's play Equaliser. Pratham, please step forward. (SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC) So, an incredible job to be a heart surgeon. What makes you want to do that? - Well, the other day I was watching a video, and it was when we were studying about the human body and the heart, and it was how only a few people in the world, heart surgeons, can see a live, working heart. And I really want to help people with one of the most important organs in the whole body. - Wow. Yeah. Perfect reason. Couldn't think of a better one, Pratham. Awesome having you here, so let's get straight into Equaliser now. 20 points for each equation you get correct. Here comes your first. It sure is. Well done. Well done. Really impressive here, Pratham. 3.125? 3.1. Finally,... It is 104. Impressive stuff, there, Pratham. Six out of seven ` just about as close as you can get to getting seven out of seven as well. - Really well done. Thank you for playing Equaliser. - Thank you. With that impressive score, Pratham now has 130 points. Zach has 100 points. Vanessa is on 100 points. And Sharlyn is on 40 points. So, we do only have one more player remaining to take on their specialist subject around. That player, of course, is Sharlyn. - So, what would you like to play? - Reo Rangatira. Awesome, Sharlyn. Let's play Reo Rangatira. Sharlyn, please step forward. (SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC) So, how do we feel about going last, Sharlyn? - Um, either way, we'll go me he te. - Like a boss. I like it. - Like a boss. (LAUGHS) All right, let's get straight into it, Sharlyn. Best of luck. First te reo focussed question coming your way. What is a Maori word for Sunday? - Um... Ratupuna? Ratapu. - Ratapu is correct. What is a Maori word for the colour red? - Whero. Well done. The giant weta is one of the biggest insects on earth. Are there 70 or 700 species of weta? - Over 700. (BUZZ!) - There's actually 70. - Oh! Is a warepukapuka a library or a museum? - Library. Awesome stuff. If you say haere ra to someone, are they staying or leaving? - They're staying and you're leaving. (BUZZ!) - They're leaving. Please spell 'whare'. Kia ora. Finally, what is the English translation for 'harare'. - That sounds like June. It's the other word for June. I don't know. - Is that your answer? - (BUZZ!) - Holiday. - Oh. There we go. That is Reo Rangatira complete. Some really good answers in there. - Thank you so much for playing Reo Rangatira. - Thank you. So we have now completed our specialist subject rounds. Let's take a look at the leader board. Pratham has 130 points. Sharlyn moves into second place with 120 points. Then we have Zach on 110 points. And Vanesa has 100 points. So a very close battle for our specialist subject rounds. Unfortunately, we do need to eliminate our first player today, though. Vanessa, you have just missed out. Unlucky, but you still get to go home with a $100 bank account, so what will you be doing with that money, Vanessa? - Uh, probably spend it on stationery or save it. - Yeah, both great options there, Vanessa. Thank you so much. - And all the best with the Japanese as well. - Thank you. Congratulations to our three remaining players. It's one step closer to the Brain Buster. - With only three players left, go time is just around the corner. I can't wait to see who our final two will be. I hope they're ready. - They'll definitely be ready after we've gone through our Brainteaser, which is what we're heading into now, Mikey. Our players today have gone through their specialist subject rounds, and we are now left with two options for our players to choose from. Today those options are Sequencer and Identifier. So Zach, Pratham and Sharlyn, please select which you would like to play now. Thank you all very much. We'll start with Zach, who has chosen... Identifier. Pratham would like to play... Identifier. And Sharlyn would like to play... Identifier as well. There we go. Let's play Identifier. We've got a battle on our hands indeed. Just 20 points separates all our players. Anyone's game, so let's get to it. First one ` Pratham. - Grasshopper, bee and... sheep. Pratham with the lead ` just wants to push that lead out, though. Well done, Pratham. Sharlyn. - Guava, lime, then blueberry. - Arrange these fruits by average weight from heaviest to lightest. That is the order we're after. Well done, Sharlyn. - Pratham. - Christchurch, Napier, Palmerston North. - Was happy to keep that order the same way. Current population size ` largest to smallest. Needed to swap around Palmerston North and Napier. Sharlyn. - Disposable nappy. Human hair. And animal fur. Eliminate the three types of waste which should not go in your organics waste bin. Needed to add aluminium cans and plastic bottles. Finally ` Zach. - Turbine, generator, and rotor blade. Zach would very much like this one to be correct. First one, second one, and... Unfortunately couldn't get it. Needed reservoir to finish it off. And just like that, our Brainteaser is complete. Thank you all very much for playing. Let's take a look at our final leader board. Pratham has 130 points. Sharlyn his 120 points. And Zach has 80 points. So, Zach, I'm sorry to say you have been eliminated from Brain Busters. Just one option is all that it took. Sorry to see you go, but a $100 bank account is all yours. So what will you be doing with that money? - I'll probably be putting the money towards my Nano Leaf that I want. - Very cool indeed. Lovely choice, Zach. Great having you on the show. And congratulations to Pratham and Sharlyn. For them, it's now on to the Brain Buster. - The ultimate obstacle course, where our top two players will battle it out to see who will be crowned as today's Brain Buster champion. Stay right there. It all goes down very soon. * We asked you for the term that means the things and money that you own, and the answer was assets. Hoki mai ano. Well, we started with four, but only two remain, as they get ready to take on the Brain Buster. (SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC) - It's the moment of truth for our final two players, Sharlyn and Pratham. You guys ready to take on the Brain Buster? Awesome. Here we go. Feet up, and let's fly. Here we go. Three, two, one, fly! Sharlyn and Pratham, well done for making it to the Brain Buster. But this is as far as one of you will go, as only one can move on to Amygdala. A leisurely slide down the Neurotransmitter for Pratham, as Sharlyn crosses the Molecule Steps. $250 will be up for grabs for the winner of this one. But they've got to make it through the Brain Buster first. Both players get through the Corpus Callosum and are entering their codes. Sharlyn's nailed it, and so has Pratham. Climbing the Parietal Lobe now. Sharlyn's got a bit of a lead. Will she be able to extend it here, or will Pratham catch up? Mahi nui ` great work from Sharlyn, as she is now out of the tunnel. Pratham speeding his way through as well. And now we come to the Frontal Lobe. Pratham appears to be closing the gap. It could be anyone's race once again. But Sharlyn gets a very fast switch activation, meaning she is free to head to the Basal Ganglia. Pratham is on his way now, too, but I don't think he'll have enough time to catch Sharlyn, who takes out the Brain Buster me he te. An awesome effort from Pratham, and a great race today through the Brain Buster. - Race complete for Sharlyn and Pratham. Pratham, I'll get you to come across this way. Well done ` completed the Brain Buster. How was the course for you, my friend? - It's good. Tiring. - Really enjoyable, though? - Yeah. Very close. Almost catching up to Sharlyn there. Couldn't quite make it, but still, second place today on Brain Busters, meaning you've got yourself a $100 bank account. What will you be doing with that money, Pratham? - I'll probably buy some new headphones. - Nice. Any ideas of what headphones we're going for? - Beats. - Yeah, flash guy. I like it, Pratham. Great having you. Sharlyn, congratulations. Like a boss ` or... - Me he te. - That's the one. Me he te. Nailed it today. - Did you think you were gonna take it out? - No. But you have one thing left to do, Sharlyn. And that, of course, is taking on Amygdala. Sharlyn, kia ora, congratulations. Welcome to Amygdala. - Think you were gonna be here at the start of the show? - No. (LAUGHS) Here you are, though. You've done really, really well today. In fact, you scored 120 points. Pratham just scored a little bit more than you ` 130 points. But of course, you get to whip those points away from him, add them to your score, meaning you're playing for $250. A lot of money. Can we win all of it? - I dunno. - Are we gonna try? - Yeah. - That's all that we can ask for. All right, let's do it. First question. Dwayne Johnson was the voice of Maui in which 2016 movie? - Moana. Great start. What has two wheels and is raced at a velodrome? Motorbike? - Just a bike. - Oh. What did Galileo make that let him observe four moons of Jupiter? A telescope? - Oh. - It is a telescope. When you pull along a Buzzy Bee toy, does it go 'click, click' or 'ding dong'? 'Click, click.' It sure does. In which board game can you land on Park Lane and Trafalgar Square? - Monopoly. - Played much Monopoly? - LAUGHS: No. Never played a full game. It's too long. - It is quite long, isn't it? - Yeah. Is it the board game we're after here, though? - (GIGGLES) Yeah. - Sure about that? It is Monopoly. What country was climate change activist Greta Thunberg born in? - Germany? Germany? - You sure about this one? - No. Why'd you say Germany? - I don't know. It's either Germany or the Netherlands. (SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC) Would have been wrong either way, actually. - The correct answer is Sweden. - Oh. Beginning with M, which country is on the USA's southern border? - Mexico. It's the most frequently crossed border in the world. Is it Mexico, though? - Yes. - (CHUCKLES) Small Blacks plays a simplified version of which sport? - Rugby? - Correct. Finally, rhyming with 'palace' who meets the White Rabbit and Mad Hatter? - Alice. Final Amygdala answer. - (DING!) - Alice is definitely the correct answer. Let's take a look at the board. Congratulations. You've won $175. Awesome job. Really, really well played. What are you going to do with the money? - I've just got a horse, so I'll probably put it towards that, or saving. - Very cool. What's your horse's name? - Alfie. Oh, big shout-out to Alfie, then. Congratulations. - $175. - Well done, Sharlyn. I'm sure you're happy with that amount. - Yeah. - Awesome. You should be. If you think you can take on the Brain Buster just like our girl Sharlyn, jump online and head to Heihei Games. Thank you so much for joining us today. Until next time, that's it for Brain Busters.
