- We start with four, but in the end, there can be only one. Kia ora. I'm Chris Kirk, and this is Brain Busters. Who has the mind power to make it all the way through the rounds and end up at this ` the Brain Buster? - King Mikey Falesiu at your service. Let's hope today's top two players have their A game ready, because the Brain Buster is not one to mess with. So buckle up, and let's get the show on the road. - Sounds good to me, Mikey. And don't forget, you can play from home as well. So let's meet today's Brain Busters. Captions by Faith Hamblyn. Captions were made with the support of NZ On Air. www.able.co.nz Copyright Able 2020. Nau mai, haere mai. Welcome to Brain Busters. Today, we have four players hoping they've got what it takes to be called the ultimate brain buster. We'll start with Mega Memory before moving into our specialist subject rounds, where players can choose from six of our options. They'll hope to gain enough points to stay in this game and avoid elimination. So let's meet today's players now. Orlando, welcome to the show. - Thank you very much. - You live, love, breathe football. - Yes. - Lucky enough to go over to Europe as well? - Yeah, we go to watch lots of good football matches over there. - Favourite one to watch? - Spurs versus Man City. - The score? - We lost one-nil. Spurs lost that. - Unlucky. Hopefully change the score here on Brain Busters. - Yes, hopefully. - Good on you, Orlando. Balpreet, welcome to the show. Music ` you're right into it, including Indian classical. Can you tell us a little bit about what that is? So, it's special Indian instruments, and the singing technique is quite similar to Western music, - but it differs quite a lot too. - Very cool and very unique. Balpreet, thank you for coming on to the show. - Desiree, you're right into your sport. What sports do we play? - I play netball and volleyball. - If you had to choose, what would it be? - Netball. - Why's that? - Cos I've been playing from a young age. - Very nice indeed. Thank you for coming to the show, Desiree. And we also have Greer. Dancing. - Yes. - How long have we been doing it for? - Since I was about 3. - That is very impressive. So ballet? - Yes. - And you've just gone on to pointe shoes, right? - Yes. A couple of years ago, I started. - So, what's that like? Is that hard or does it hurt or...? - It hurts a little bit, but after a while you get used to it. - And looks amazing. - Yeah. - Epic. All right, guys, thank you so much for coming on to the show. Let's get straight into it and play our first round of the day. It's Mega Memory. 90 seconds on the clock, as always. 10 points if our players buzz in and get it right. Fail to do so, and our players will lose 10 points. Good luck. Your time starts now. Which city sees the sun first each day in New Zealand ` Nelson or Gisborne? - Desiree. - Gisborne. - Will Smith plays which character in Disney's 2019 Aladdin? Desiree. - Genie. - Which country is the traditional home to the sport known as gridiron? - Orlando. - America. - What shape is a standard computer screen? Balpreet. - Rectangle. - In which New Zealand sport to the Mystics play the Magic? - Desiree. - Netball. - Where would you look to see a meteor falling? - Greer. - The sky. - Which New Zealand ice-cream manufacturer makes Trumpets? Orlando. - Tip-Top. - What is the artist Shakira's birth country? - Orlando. - Brazil. - Colombia. What is the game tic tac-toe-also known as? Balpreet. - Noughts and crosses. - In the Hairy Mclary books, what type of animal is Scarface? Balpreet. - A dog. - Cat. What colour is broccoli? Desiree. - Green. - In which sport is a ball thrown by a pitcher? Orlando. - Baseball. - Is the correct answer, and that is time up for Mega Memory. Thank you all for playing. Let's take a look at the scores. It's Desiree at the top with 40 points. Orlando has 20 points, Balpreet has 10 points, and Greer also has 10 points. So now we move into our specialist subject grounds, and playing for us today is Balpreet. - What have you chosen to play? - Identifier. - Thank you very much. Let's play Identifier. Balpreet, please step forward. - How are we feeling about Identifier, Balpreet? - Good, pretty good. - Think you've got what it takes? - Yes. - Perfect score? - Most likely. - Oh, I like the confidence. Let's get into it, then. The best of luck, Balpreet. Excellent start, Balpreet. Nice work getting back on track with that one. Had apricot there, swapped it out for lime. You were correct in choosing lime, but needed to still have apricot. Good stuff, Balpreet. That are not in the carbon cycle. Did we have it? Recurring theme ` missing out by one, unfortunately, again, Balpreet. Will it make the difference down the track? We will find out. But still, great job. Thank you for completing Identifier. Balpreet takes the lead with 70 points. Desiree has 40 points, Orlando has 20 points, and Greer has 10 points. So let's move on to our next player now for their specialist subject round. - And that player is Greer. What would you like to play, Greer? - Sequencer. - Thank you very much. Let's play Sequencer. Greer, please step forward. So, in ballet, we have sequences, right, but I think the Sequencer might be a little bit different than that. Still feeling confident? - I hope so. - All right. Let's get into it, Greer. Best of luck. Lego original blocks, Meccano, K'Nex ` in which order were these construction toys first created, from earliest to most recent? - (CONTEMPLATIVE MUSIC) - Hoping to get this first sequence correct. Needed to swap Lego original blocks and K'Nex around. Michael Campbell, Rob Waddell, Lisa Carrington ` in what order were these people crowned Supreme Halberg winner? There we go. That's the green we want to see. Gargoyles, Felix the Cat, Phineas and Ferb ` in which order to these cartoons first appear on screen, from earliest to most recent? The slow move across. Should I have moved it? Should I have left it? Let's see. Should have left Phineas and Ferb there; still needed to swap Felix the Cat and Gargoyles around, though. Radio Hauraki, The Edge, Mai FM ` in which order were these New Zealand radio stations established? - (CONTEMPLATIVE MUSIC) Swopped Mai FM and The Edge round. Swapped it back. Was it the right decision to make? You had it right and swapped it back. Sorry, Greer. Story of the round there. You just needed to keep them a couple of times would have had a whole lot more points. Still, thank you very much for playing Sequencer. Balpreet still holds on to the lead, with 70 points. Desiree has 40 points. Greer has 30 points, and Orlando has 20 points. So two players have already completed their specialist subject rounds, but all four of our players are hoping they've got what it takes to head to the Brain Buster. - Yep, one wrong move can be a game changer. Hopefully not with today's final two, though. I'm pretty sure they're up for it. - Thank you very much, Mikey. And don't forget you can play from home as well. Just head online to... Don't go anywhere. We'll see you a muri te whakata. * Nau mai, hoki mai. Welcome back to Brain Busters. Just before the break, we had Balpreet and Greer take on their specialist subject rounds, and coming up front next is Orlando. - So what have we chosen to play? - Blueprinter. - Thank you very much, Orlando. Let's play Blueprinter. Orlando, please step forward. How are we feeling about Blueprinter, Orlando? Got a bit of a strategy in mind? - Not really, just remember a few letters and see how it goes. - Nice. I like your thinking. So you have 30 seconds to memorise, as you just mentioned, and then you'll have a further 30 seconds to put in your answers. Best of luck, Orlando. Let's see what our Blueprinter is. The Great Pyramids of Giza. Best of luck, Orlando. Your time starts now. One of the seven wonders of the ancient world and the only one to remain standing today, The Great Pyramid of Giza was the tallest manmade structure on the planet for almost 4000 years. Considering the pyramids were built 4500 years ago, that's some pretty impressive Egyptian engineering. Five seconds left. That's it. 30 seconds now, Orlando, to put in your answers. Good luck. Your time starts now. - WHISPERS: OK. - (DING! DING!) - Halfway. Had all the time in the world to put in that last one there, wanted to make sure everything was correct. - Do we think we've got it all correct? - I'm not too sure about this one. Let's look. We wanna see a whole lot of green. First one, please. Pyramids of Khafre is correct. Pyramids of Khufu makes it two. The Western Cemetery gives you three in a row. We've got four. Five for the builders' quarters. Unfortunately, we do have one wrong there and missed out on the boat pits as well. So started off like a rocket, nailed it right off the bat, but unfortunately lost the way towards the end. Still pretty solid effort, Orlando. - Thank you for playing Blueprinter. - Thank you. It's Orlando who now has the lead, with 120 points. Balpreet has 70 points. Desiree is on 40 points, and Greer is on 30 points. So we have just one more player remaining to take on their specialist subject round. That player is Desiree. - So what would you like to play, Desiree? - Equaliser. - Thank you very much. Let's play Equaliser. Desiree, please step forward. The lead was yours after Mega Memory, Desiree. Really well done there - So do we want that lead back? - Yes. - All right. Let's get it. Good luck. - 20. - Correct. - 68. - Well done. - Negative-four. - Quick on that one. - 33. - (DING!) - Really good stuff here. - A hundred and ninety three. - (BUZZ!) - A hundred and seventy three. 31.5. - Great stuff. Finally, 24 times by five equals? - 120. - (DING!) - Is correct. You got six. You should have had seven, probably there, Desiree. Still really, really well played. Thank you for playing Equaliser. You can take a step back to you podium. Great way to finish off our specialist subject round. So let's take a look now at the leader board. Desiree managed to claim back first place, sitting on 160 points. Orlando has 120 points. Balpreet has 70 points, and Greer has 30 points. So unfortunately, we do need to eliminate our first player off Brain Busters today. Greer, it will be you. Sorry to see you go, but the good news is you've got a $100 bank account now. So what are you going to be doing with that money, Greer? - I'm gonna put it towards some new dance gear. - Oh, lovely choice. All the best for the dancing as well, Greer. - Thank you. - And congratulations to our three remaining players. For them, that's one step closer to the Brain Buster. - Ooh, three players left. Two will race, but only one winner will go through to Amygdala to turn their points into money. - And before we can even think about money, we've got the Brain-Teaser, Mikey. So all of our players today have gone through their specialised subject rounds, and we are left with two for our remaining players to choose from. Those options today are real Rep Rangatira or Spellbinder. So Orlando, Balpreet and Desiree, please select which one you would like to play now. Thank you, everyone, for voting. We'll firstly, take a look at Orlando, who has chosen Spellbinder. Balpreet wants to play Spellbinder as well. Can we get three for three, Desiree. Indeed we can ` Spellbinder. There we go. Let's play Spellbinder. Big points up for grabs here, so let's get straight into our Spellbinder edition of The Brainteaser. Best of luck. Here comes your first word. Please spell primal. - Desiree. - P-R-I-M-A-L. - Correct, Desiree. Extending that lead. Influence. Balpreet. - I-N-F-L-U-E-N-C-E. - Correct. Shrivelled. Desiree. - S-H-R-I-V-E-L - E-D. - Needed one more L in there. Sorry, Desiree. Your next word is radial. - Balpreet. - R-A-D- I-A-L. - Correct. Your last word is... pitiful. - P-I-T- I-F-U-L. - Very quick on that buzzer, but Orlando has absolutely nailed it. Well done. What a round for Brian-Teaser! Let's take a look now at the scores. After another great round, it's Desire in first place, with 160 points. Orlando is close behind on 150 points, and Balpreet has 130 points. So, as I mentioned, a really solid round there for the Brain-Teaser. Unfortunately, though, we do have to eliminate someone now. Balpreet, you were really, really close, but you have been eliminated. A $100 bank account is all yours, though. So what are you going to do with that money? - I'm probably gonna buy a digital audio workstation. - Oh, very cool. What are you gonna do with that? - It's for music production. - Oh, epic, man. All the best with it. And congratulations to Orlando and Desiree. For them, it's on to the Brian Buster. - Upper-body strength, lower-body strength and mana is what one of our top two contestants will need to be crowned as today's Brain Buster champ. Who will it be? Don't go anywhere. We'll be back. to be crowned as today's Brain Buster champ. Who will it be? Don't go anywhere. We'll be back. * Nau mai, hoki mai. It's all come down to this as two players take on the Brain Buster! - (WHOOSHING) - The moment of truth for our final two contestants. Let's hope they're ready for the Brain Buster. It's time to fly, guys. Three, two, one, go! We've got a keen footballer taking on a keen netballer here today in the Brain Buster. Will those skills help them through? Maybe. But only one will be moving on to Amygdala. Oh no! Orlando's tripped on the Molecule steps. That's not a good start for him. He's got straight back on the horse, but Desiree has shot ahead through the Corpus Callosum and is now entering her code. Oops ` forgot to add the hash on the end. Nice one. Desiree partway up the Parietal Lobe now. Orlando's going to need to be quick here. Desiree fires into the tunnel. Orlando is up and on his way now, but before you know it, both players are out and ready to tackle the Frontal Lobe. It's anyone's race now as they both head for the DNA molecule ladders. Desiree's there already and she is going to want to find the correct combination on the switches ASAP. But Orlando beats here to it! Oh, that's a real game changer. Desiree's activated hers now too. It'll be a race to the finish through the Basal Ganglia. And Orlando takes the win. Chris, what a comeback this was! - What a race! Wow. Wow, wow. Well, Desiree, we have to start with you. You were leading for the majority of it. It was all yours. And then unfortunately just struggled with that last wee section. What happened? - I just messed up. - Oh, you were so, so close. Still a great race. Second place today on Brain Busters, which means $100 bank account is all yours. - What are you going to do with that money, Desiree? - Probably save it up for Christmas. - Very, very smart of you. Thank you so much for coming on to the show, Desiree. Orlando, messed up on the Molecule steps there, but then where you raced through, you know you needed to go for it, came away with the win. How was it feeling when you saw it all go green? - Oh, it was amazing. So amazing. - (LAUGHS) Out of breath as well. Well deserved, Orlando. Congratulations. One thing left to do, and that is taking on Amygdala. Well, we have an Orlando movie star, and now we have our very own Orlando TV star. Congratulations on making it to the Amygdala. - Thank you so much. - Hey, you've done an amazing job. You scored a hundred and 50 points; Desiree, who you went up against in a great battle on the Brain Buster, scored a hundred and 60 points. Of course you get to take all those points away from Desiree, meaning you are playing for $310. - A lot of money. - Oh yeah. - What do we do with $310. - I don't know; probably buy some more football stuff. - Fair enough. Let's see if we can get to that total, then. Best of luck. Here comes question number one. How many millimetres in a centimetre? - 10. - There definitely are 10. In which sport can you see the Southern Steel play the Mainland Tactix? - American football. - Netball is the answer. Which video-sharing social networking services slogan is Make Your Day? - TikTok. - Awesome stuff there. Theodore Roosevelt was the president of which country from 1901 to 1909? - United States of America. - Nice. In Treasure Island, what letter marked the spot on the treasure map? - X. - Seem a bit concerned when you said that as your answer. - Think it might be a trick question. - (DING!) - No trick here ` X is the correct answer. Which New Zealand city is home to sports venues the Basin and the Cake Tin? - Wellington. - Our capital city. Is it home to the Basin and the Cake Tin, though? It is indeed. Sigh of relief there from Orlando. Next up ` if a pedal-powered two-wheeler is called a bicycle, what is a pedal-powered three-wheeler called? - Tricycle. - Going from bicycle to tricycle makes sense, or is this the trick question? No, I wouldn't do that to you. Tricycle is, of course, correct, Orlando. Which movie character sings Colours of the Wind? - Rapunzel. - Is it Rapunzel? Unfortunately not. Sorry, Orlando. Pocahontas is the answer. Is the capital of Austria Vienna or Foccacia? - Vienna. - Couldn't possibly be Foccacia? - Don't think so. - Yeah, Vienna is absolutely correct. The other, of course, is a delicious bread. Final Amygdala question ` what sort of music festival held in Gore is the Golden Guitars ` country or heavy metal? - Country. - Had a think about it. What made you say country? - Well, 'Golden' doesn't sound very heavy metally, so I went country on that one. - Like your thinking. Doesn't matter what I like, though; it matters what the answer is. Is it country? - (DING!) - Yes, it was country to finish off Amygdala. Well, Orlando, congratulations. You have won yourself $248. Well played. Some really, really great answers in there. You've absolutely nailed it. - So heaps of football gear is it? - Heaps of football gear. - Awesome. All right. Congratulations. 248! - Whoo-hoo! - Awesome performance, Orlando. I'm sure you're happy with that. - Are you ready to take it home? - Very ready. - Nice, man. If you think he can take the Brain Buster out, just like our man Orlando, jump online and head to... - Thank you so much for joining us today. Until next time, that's it for Brain Busters.
