Captions by Joshua Tait Captions were made with the support of NZ On Air. www.able.co.nz Copyright Able 2020 - Nau mai, haere mai, welcome to Brian Busters. Today, we have four players hoping they've got what it takes to be called the Ultimate Brain Buster. We'll start with Mega Memory, before we move into our specialist subject rounds where players can choose from six of our options. They'll hope to get enough points to stay in this game and avoid elimination. So let's meet today's players. Firstly, Sam, great to have you on the show. What do we like to do in our spare time, Sam? - I like playing outside a lot and I like playing with my dog who is a golden retriever ` Rosie. - Oh,... - And I played cricket and I'm an all-rounder. - Awesome, Sam. Great to have you here on the show. Campbell, what do you like to do? - I'm into my hockey, basketball and I've also got a dog called Digby. He's a Cairn terrier and an Australian terrier. - I'm loving the love for the animals today. Great to have you on the show, Campbell. Maraea, welcome. I hear you want to be a lawyer when you're older. - Yeah. - Why is that? - I'm into debating. Kind of got into that with my mum, if I'm being honest. - (GUFFAWS) - and... I thought it was something fun to do or something I've been wanting to do. - Yeah. Nice, Maraea. Great having you here. And we've also got Brenna. Welcome to the show, Brenna. What do you like to do in your spare time? - I like to play hockey and volleyball. - Nice. Also have a job as well? - Yes, I deliver newspapers around my town, Rolleston. - And we're saving all that money up? - No. (LAUGHS) I wish I did though. - All right. Well, maybe you've got a chance for you to save some money here on the show a bit later on. So let's get straight into it now, play our first round of the day. It's Mega Memory. 90 seconds on the clock for our players. Good luck, your time starts now. Which sport is played by West Ham and Liverpool? Campbell. - Soccer. - Which sitcom's characters include brother and sister Ross and Monica? Maraea? - Friends. - Which boat-based sport rhymes with mowing? Brenna. - Rowing. - Is macadamia and old name for Scotland was something you eat? Brenna. - Nuts... Something you ate. - Which movie introduces the character Elastigirl? Campbell. - The Incredibles. - On which part of your body are your biceps? Sam. - Your arm. - Who originally said, 'Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art though, Romeo?' Maraea? - Juliet. Is the capital of Belgium rissoles or Brussels? Campbell. - Brussels. - Complete this Wiggles lyric ` 'Toot toot, chugga chugga, big red' what? Brenna. - Car. (LAUGHS) - Which picture book character rhymes with buffalo? Brenna. - Gruffalo. - Which is the type of biscuit toffee tops or toffee pops? Brenna. Toffee Pops. - Is delicious and correct for our final Mega Memory answer. Well played, everyone. Let's take a look at the scores. Brenna has 50 points. Campbell has 30 points. Maraea has 20 points, and Sam has 10 points. So now we move into our specialist subject rounds, and starting us off today will be Sam. What would you like to play, Sam? - Equaliser. - Thank you very much. Let's play Equaliser. Sam, please step forward. (TENSE MUSIC) So how cute is our dog, Rosie, Sam? - Kind of. - Very cute. - Yeah. - Get a little bit annoying sometimes? - Yes. - Love her regardless though. All right, let's get into Equaliser now, Sam. Best of luck. Correct? Nicely done. Awesome work, Sam. On a roll. Correct. Correct. Finally for Equaliser and for a perfect score ` Is the correct answer, giving you, Sam, a perfect score. That is one way to put some serious pressure on the board. Congratulations, Sam. Thank you for playing Equaliser. With that score, Sam now has one 150 points. Brenna is on 50 points. Campbell has 30 points, and Maraea has 20 points. So our next player today will be Maraea. What would you like to play? - Reo Rangatira. - Awesome, Maraea. Let's play Reo Rangatira. Maraea, please step forward. (TENSE MUSIC) Sam laid down the challenge, Maraea, are you ready for it yet? - Yeah, no pressure. - (LAUGHS) Good luck, Maraea. 20 points for each te reo-focused question. Here we go. What is a Maori way to say birthday? - Hari huritau. - Correct. What is an English word for purotu? - Uh,... smart. - Beautiful. Next up, complete this expression ` 'Hawaiki-nui, Hawaiki-roa, Hawaiki?' - Pamamao. - Ae. Spell moko. Kia ora. What is a Maori way to say, 'Pass to me'? - Homai ki a au. - Well done. - (CHUCKLES) Big mouth? Correct. - Oh! - Well done. Finally, for Reo Rangatira ` If you add together rima and toru, what would you get? - Waru. - You definitely would get waru, Maraea. Well done. Really, really well played there for Reo Rangatira. Thank you so much. - Thank you. - Sam has 150 points. Maraea has 140 points. Brenna is on 50 points and Campbell has 30 points. So what an incredible start here on Brain Busters. And we still have two players to take on their specialist rounds, but all four of our players are hoping they can head to the Brain Buster. - One winner will go through to Amygdale to turn their points into moolah. To do that, you gotta get through the Brain Buster. Think they're up for it, Chris? - If these scores are anything to go by, Mikey, I think they definitely are. And don't forget, you can play from home as well. Simply hop on line to Hei Hei Games. Don't go anywhere. We'll see you i muri I te whakata. * Hoki mai ano. Welcome back to Brain Busters. Just before the break, we had Sam and Maraea take on their specialist subject rounds. And playing now, it is Campbell's turn. What would you like to play? - Sequencer. - Thanks, Campbell. Let's play Sequencer. Campbell, please step forward. (TENSE MUSIC) How are we feeling? A lot of pressure on the show today. - Yeah. - You can handle it as well? - Yeah, I think so. - Excellent, Campbell. Let's get straight into it then. Your first sequence ` Arrange these telephones, in order of release. Three green to start us off. Nice work, Campbell. In which order were these children's TV shows first aired? Now, we did have Bob the Builder first, then you put him into second, was that the right thing to do? Sure was. Well done. Arrange these tennis stars into the order in which their careers began. Wrong way, Campbell. Had it the other way, you would have been right. Put these video games into order of release, earliest to latest. Again, having that last minute swap. But this time should have kept it. In what order did these songs get released? So, you were right with Bohemian Rhapsody, back in 1975, then we had Beautiful Trauma in 2017 and then our Kiwi girl Benee with Soaked in 2019. In which chronological order were these banks established in New Zealand? Really well played there, Campbell. Nice. And finally, for Sequencer ` In which order were these sweet treats first created? Have we got a sweet tooth, Campbell? - Yeah, a little bit. (CHUCKLES) - And a sweet answer to finish it off. Campbell, well played there. Some really, really good answers. Thank you for taking on Sequencer. Sam has 150 points. Maraea has 140 points. Campbell now has 110 points. Then we have Brenna on 50 points. So there is just one more player remaining to take on their specialist subject round, and that player, of course, is Brenna. What would you like to play? - Spellbinder, please. - Sounds good, Brenna. Let's play Spellbinder. Brenna, please step forward. (TENSE MUSIC) Now, you must have been feeling confident ` 50 points after Mega Memory. You had the lead. Now we're in that elimination spot, Brenna. What's going through your head? - I just hope that I can get some answers correct. - Let's hope so. Let's do it now. Good luck. Your first word is ` Wizard. Correct! Raspberry. Nice! Koala. Correct. Umpire. Awesome stuff. Cassette. - Can I please have the definition? - A sealed plastic unit containing a length of audiotape, videotape, film. - Needed one more S and you would have been right there. Your next word is ` deity. - Can I please have it in a sentence? - Zeus was a Greek god or deity. - (CHUCKLES) - D-E-I-T-Y. And your final words ` warrior. - Can I please have the definition? - a person engaged or experienced in warfare. - I said it wrong. - (CHUCKLES) Well done, Brenna. Very well played there. A warrior indeed, taking on Spellbinder. Thank you very much for playing. That's it for our specialist subject rounds. So let's take a look now at the leaderboard. Sam has 150 points. Brenna now also has 150 points. We then have Maraea on 140, and Campbell on 110 points. So a great round of our specialist subjects. But, unfortunately, we do have to eliminate our first player today. And that is Campbell. Sorry to see you go, mate, but you've got yourself a $100 account. What will you do with the money? - I'll probably just shout my friends at the tuck shop and then just save the rest. - You're a good friend, Campbell. Thanks for coming on to the show. And congratulations to our three remaining players. For them, it's one step closer to the Brain Buster. - With only three players remaining, showtime is not far away. I hope our final two and ready to take on this bad boy, because it will be a challenge. I'm confident they got this though. - Thanks, Mikey. And before we can head to the Brain Buster, we have our Brainteaser. Now, all of our players today have gone through their specialist subject rounds, and we are left with two options for our players to choose from. Today, those options are Blueprinter and Identifier. So, Sam, Maraea and Brenna, please select which one you would like to play now. Thank you, everyone, for playing. We will start with Sam, who has voted for... Identifier. We'll jump across to Brenna, who chose... Blueprinter. So it comes down to Maraea, who has picked... Identifier. Thank you, everyone, for voting. Let's play Identifier. It's just 10 points that separate our players. Who will be going through? Let's find out now. Best of luck. Here comes your first question for the Brainteaser. Maraea. - Ruby red beetroot, radish... and avocado. Oh, carrot. And carrot. So you're confirming your changing your answer there to carrot? - Yes. (INHALES THEATRICALLY) - Very lucky there, Maraea. Next up ` Sam. - Cabbage. Cauliflower. And carrot. - Good to say we all love our veges for the Brainteaser today. Sam, you're correct. Finally ` Brenna. - Fermentation, photosynthesis and symbol. - Locked in. Brenna needs this to be right. - (CHUCKLES) - Narrowly missing out. Just needed inflammation as our final option there, and that's does end our Brainteaser. Thank you, everyone, for playing. Let's take a look at our final leaderboard. Sam now has 180 points. We then have Maraea 170, and then Brenna on 120 points. So, Brenna, unfortunately, you have been eliminated from Brain Busters. You've played very, very well today, and you also get a $100 bank account. What will you do with that money, Brenna? - I'm probably going to save it. - Smart choice, and try save some of that paper run money as well, all right? Good on ya. And nice work to Sam and Maraea. For them, it's now on to the Brain Buster. - Two player race ` one winner. Who will be today's champion? We'll find out soon. Hi! Activated almonds occur when you soak walnut in sea salt solution overnight. Wanna race? Oh, nice! (LAUGHS) (ALL CHEER) VOICEOVER: Nintendo Switch. Play. Connect. We'll find out soon. * - Welcome back to Brain Busters. We've gone through Mega Memory, our specialist subject rounds, the Brainteaser, and for our final two, it's now time for the Brain Buster! - It's now go time for our final two contestants, Sam and Maraea. Well done to you both for making it this far. Now, I know, Sam, football is one of your sports. Tell us, how did you get into that, bro? - I was just playing rugby when I was younger, and I decided to try something new, and I really enjoyed it. - And I'm sure it's paid off, because here you are about to take on the Brain Buster. Are you ready? - Yes. - Awesome work, bro. And Maraea, I know dance is a thing for you. - Yeah. - Tell us about that experience. - Yeah, no, it's fun. I haven't been doing it much lately, but it's just trying to get those triples and stuff like that. - Well, I'm sure you're ready to hit that bull's eye today. You ready to take on the ultimate obstacle course? - Yeah. - Well done, Maraea. It's now time for our two players to jump on their zip lines, and let's get ready to fly. Here we go. Three, two, one, fly! First up is the Brain Stem Zip Line. With Sam being a footballer and Maraea being a dancer, I'm expecting some fancy footwork from these two. Let's start with the Molecule Steps. All good so far. How good are their memories? We'll find out at the Hippocampus, but not before the Corpus Callosum. It's looking even-stevens. Had they remembered their codes? Yes and yes. Up the Parietal Lobe. Sam got a perfect score for his speciality round and has a 10 point lead over Maraea. But none of that matters here on the Brain Buster. There just needs to be one winner. I couldn't tell you who that winner will be just yet. It's way too close to call. Both out of the tunnels. Oh! Maraea left her shoe. Eh, who needs it? She's charging ahead anyway across the Frontal Lobe. Still a tight race. They've nearly reached the DNA Molecule Ladders. First one to find the correct combination can head for the finish. Who's it going to be though? It could take a while. Maraea gets in first. And now Sam. Here we go ` the big finale. The Basal Ganglia is the last obstacle separating these two from victory. (WHISTLES) Chris, it's close. - What a close race that was. Sam, I'll get you to come this way beside Maraea here. And we'll start with you. It was neck and neck the whole way. I think Maraea you had a bit of a lead there to start with, and then Sam you came back, and then Maraea took it in the end. But what a race. I see you're a little bit disappointed there, Sam, but how much fun was the ultimate obstacle course? - Really fun. - Enjoyed it? - Yes. - Would do it again all over? Excellent. Sam, second place today. Congratulations. Really well deserved. And you've got yourself a $100 bank account. What will you do with the money? - Save. - Save, save, save. Good work, Sam. Great having you here on the show. Maraea, congratulations. You have beaten the Brain Buster. Not without a little bit of a casualty. We lost a shoe! - CHUCKLES: Yeah. - But what` what were you thinking when that happened? - I thought I had to put it back on, so I was stressing out. - (LAUGHS) But decided, 'Leave it, don't need it. Finish the race and take it out'. Happy with the win? - Yes. - Awesome job, Maraea. Still one thing left to do, and that is to take on Amygdala. Maraea, congratulations on making it all the way to Amygdala. Representing Gisborne as well. That's pretty cool. - Yeah. (CHUCKLES) How do you feel about being here? - I was nervous at the start. Still kind of am. But` (LAUGHS) - Ready to get into it? - Yeah. - Excellent. Had a great round. You scored one 170 points. Sam actually scored 10 points more than you. Scored 180. Good thing is though you get to take all those points. Meaning you're playing for $350. - (GASPS, CHUCKLES) - A bit of money. - Yeah. - Let's see how much we can win. Best of luck, Maraea. - Thank you. - Does Kathmandu sell outdoor gear or overseas trips? - Outdoor gear. - Correct. In a game of cricket, how many players from the batting side are usually on the field at any one time? - I'm going to say two. - Two?! - Yeah. - That's correct. - Oh. - Which nuts rhyme with 'Moustache, he grows'? - Pistachio. (CHUCKLES) - CHUCKLES: That is correct. Beginning with D, the T. Rex was what type of animal? - Dinosaur. - Correct. What is the Maori way to say horse? - Hoiho? - Hoiho? Of course, well played. Beginning with D, the Sahara, is one of the world's biggest what? - Deserts? - SCEPTICALLY: Desert? You got it. At 30m in height, in which country is the statue Christ the Redeemer located? - I'm just thinking it's Statue of Liberty, to be honest. Um, New York. - Final answer? - Yeah. - Not New York, I'm afraid. Brazil was the answer there. - Oh. - Which is not a model of iPhone ` 7, 8, or 9? - 9. - Three options there. And you've picked the right one. - (SIGHS) - Finally, for Amygdala, which is not a metal ` copper, tin, glass. - Glass. - Being generous again, giving you three options to choose from. Definitely glass? - Yeah. - Of course, glass is correct. Maraea, well done. Let's take a look ` $280 dollars. That's a lot of money, and it's all yours. What are you going to do with it, Maraea? - Spend it. (LAUGHS) - (LAUGHS) All of it. - Yeah` Oh, maybe` - Save, like, a little bit just for me. - Uh... - (GUFFAWS) Maraea, thank you very much for coming on the show. Congratulations. $280. - Tu meke performance, Maraea. You happy with the result? - Yes. Very. - Guess what. Green. Green. Green. - (LAUGHS LOUDLY) - If you think you can take on the Brain Buster, just like our girl, Maraea, jump online and head to Hei Hei Games. - Thank you so much for joining us today. Until next time, that's it for Brain Busters. Captions were made with the support of NZ On Air. www.able.co.nz Copyright Able 2020
