- Hip-hop to history; maths to memory. We start with four, but in the end they can be only one. - Your man Mikey Falesiu has got you covered with today's action. If our four players really want to turn their points into money, they've got to go hard or go home. Who would be today's champ? Chris, let's get it. - Kia ora, Mikey, and don't forget, you can play from home as well. So let's meet today's Brain Busters. Captions by Annie Curtis Captions were made with the support of NZ On Air. www.able.co.nz Copyright Able 2020 - Nau mai, haere mai. Welcome to Brain Busters. Today we have four players hoping they've got what it takes to be called the ultimate Brain Buster. We'll start with Mega Memory before we move into our specialist subject rounds, where our players can choose from six of our options. They'll hope to gain enough points to stay in this game and avoid elimination. So let's meet today's players. Firstly, Alice. - Hello. - Welcome to the show. - Hello. - Now, I hear you're right into your dancing and sewing. What kind of things do you sew? - I like to make clothes, and I also made a lot of masks in lockdown. - Awesome. Did you manage to sell some of those masks? - Yeah, I did. I sold, like, 80 masks in my community. - 80? - Yeah. - Wow. That would have put a bit of pocket money in the bank account. - Yeah, quite a bit. (CHUCKLES) - Nice, Alice. Welcome to the show, Danica. Now you're also quite crafty. What do you make? - I make scented candles that I sell in unique glasses, so they're different from everything` every other candle. - That's awesome. Also quite sporty? Your sport? - Yes, I play hockey for Waitakere. - Very nice. Minjae, great to have you here on the show. Taekwondo is your thing. How long have you done it for? - Six to seven years. - Nice. What do you love about it? - I love about how you can learn to defend yourself and also do exercise at the same time. - And what kind of belt do we have at the moment, Minjae? - I'm currently holding on third black belt. - (EXCLAIMS) Very flash indeed. Great having you here, Minjae, and Max, welcome to the show. Another sporty lead. What sport do we play? - I play cricket for Brooklyn Cricket Club. - Bat or bowl? - I'm a leg spin bowler. - What's your best wicket you ever got? - In the Hawkes Bay tournament, I bowled someone round the legs. - Yeah, nice. Love to see that. Well, it's great having you all here on the show, team. Thank you so much for being a part of it. Let's get straight into our first round of the day. It's Mega Memory. 90 seconds on the clock. Good luck to every single one of you. Your time starts now. Who is a movie star? Reese Witherfork or Reese Witherspoon? Alice. - Reese Witherspoon. (DING!) - Which is not a recording format ` VHS, DVD, BNZ? Danica? - BNZ. (DING!) - Which country is on the southern border of North Korea? Max. - South Korea. (DING!) - Which flying boy has a fairy friend called Tinker` Alice? - Peter Pan. - What kind of animal is Bugs Bunny? Alice. - A bunny. (DING!) - Which chess piece makes an L-shaped move? Minjae. - Knight. (DING!) - Is the pole vault and event at the Summer or Winter Olympics? Danica. - Winter. (BUZZ!) - Summer. - In Jack and the Beanstalk, what did Jack swap for beans? Minjae. - Horse. (BUZZ!) - Cow. Which North Island city's Maori name is Tamaki Makaurau? Alice. - Auckland. (DING!) - The marathon is what kind of race? Alice. - Running. (DING!) - Who wrote the play Much Ado About Nothing? Alice. - Shakespeare. (DING!) - Macchiato is a way of making what? Alice. - Coffee. (DING!) - What does the 'L' stand for in NRL? Max. - League. (DING!) - Which country is TVNZ based in? Alice. - New Zealand. (DING!) - Which is not a rugby union position? Fullback, halfback, thirdback? (SIREN WAILS) - Danica. - Thirdback. - Is correct, and that is a final answer to Mega Memory. Thank you everyone for playing. Let's take a look at our scores. Alice has the lead with 80 points, Max is on 20 points, Danica has 10 points, and Minjae is on zero points. So now we move into our specialist subject rounds and starting us off today will be Minjae. What would you like to play? - Blueprinter. - Thank you very much. Let's play Blueprinter. Minjae, please step forward. (TENSE MUSIC) So when we're not doing taekwondo, what else do we like to do, Minjae? - Cubing. - As in, like, Rubik's cube? - Yes. - How fast can we solve it? - Averagely 20 seconds. - Wow. Very impressive indeed. Well, the good news for you is that you don't have 20 seconds; you've got 30 seconds here for your Blueprinter. So take a look and see what all the options are, and then you'll have a further 30 seconds to put those answers in. So let's take a look and see what your Blueprinter is. It's Old Ghost Road. Your time starts now. A long forgotten goldminers road has been transformed into a mountain biking and tramping hub known as the Old Ghost Road Trail, connecting the upper Buller Gorge to the mighty Mokihinui River in the north. (INTRIGUING MUSIC) 10 seconds left. (SIREN WAILS) Time's up. You now have 30 seconds to put your answers in, which starts now. (TENSE MUSIC) Half way. How do we feel about our answers there, Minjae? - Um, I'm not sure. - Not sure? Let's see. (DING!) Welcome Creek is correct. (DING!) Ghost Lake is also correct. (DING!) Newton River is right as well. (DING!) We've got four in a row with The Big Slips. (BUZZ!) Couldn't make it five. (DING!) That is five, though. (BUZZ!) Stern Valley was not correct, so five out of seven. Minjae, you should be very happy with that. Thank you very much for playing Blueprinter. - Thank you. - Minjae has the lead now with 100 points, Alice has 80 points, Max is on 20, and Danica has 10 points. Time now for our second player to come forward today, and that player is Danica. What will you be playing? - Equaliser. Thank you, Danica. Let's play Equaliser. Danica, please step forward. (TENSE MUSIC) So how long have we been making candles for, Danica? - I started it early last year, and I've been doing it ever since. - Nice. Becoming quite the little business, is it? - Yeah, pretty` pretty good. (CHUCKLES) - Great to hear. Awesome, Danica. Well, let's get into Equaliser now. Best of luck. Here comes your first equation. (DING!) - Correct. (BUZZ!) (DING!) Well done. (DING!) Correct. And finally for Equaliser ` (DING!) Is correct. Well done, Danica. So close a couple of times there, but some really good answers as well. Thank you for taking on Equaliser. - Thank you. Minjae has 100 points, Danica is on 90 points, Alice has 80 points, and Max has 20 points. So two of our players have already completed their specialist subject rounds, but all four have their fingers crossed, hoping they've got what it takes to go hang out with Mikey. - Here on the Brain Buster, one mistake could cost you. Hopefully with today's final two players, they're up for it. Let's go, Chris. - Kia ora, Mikey, and don't forget you can play from home as well. Just hop online to HEIHEI Games. Don't go anywhere. We'll be right back. A muri i te whakata. * - Hoki mai ano. Welcome back to Brain Busters. Just before the break, we had Minjae and Danica take on their specialist subject rounds, and coming up to the front now, it is Max's turn. What would you like to play, Max? - Identifier. - Thank you. Let's play Identifier. Max, please step forward. (TENSE MUSIC) How are we feeling, Max? - Excited. - Excited? - A bit nervous. - How many points are we after? - As many as I can get. - That's what we like to hear. Good on you, Max. Let's get into Identifier now. (TENSE MUSIC) (DING!) Correct. - (EXHALES) (DING!) Nicely done. (DING, BUZZ!) Needed metamorphic in there. (DING, BUZZ!) And again, so close. Had two, just needed 'space'. Finally,... Final one, Max. Happy with it? - Yeah. (DING!) As you should be. That is correct. Max, well played there. So close a few times, but still a good effort. Thank you for taking on Identifier. Minjae has 100 points, Danica has 90 points, Alice has 80 points, and Max also has 80 points. So we have just one player remaining to take on their specialist subject round, and that player is Alice. What will you be playing today, Alice? - Spellbinder. - Thank you. Let's play Spellbinder. Alice, please step forward. (TENSE MUSIC) 80 points after Mega Memory. - (CHUCKLES) - Alice, you were on a roll for wee while there. - Yeah. - Just happened to know everything. - (CHUCKLES) Well, I guess so. - Can we continue it during Spellbinder? - I hope so. - Let's put it to the test now. 20 points for each word you spell correct. Here is your first word. Impact. (DING!) Correct. Terraces. (DING!) Close. Correct. Granular. - Could you put that into a sentence, please? - Sand has a very granular texture. (BUZZ!) A-R. - Oh, OK. Arctic. (DING!) Correct. Please spell 'connections'. (DING!) Well done. Incisor. (DING!) Correct. And finally, puppet. (DING!) That is correct. Continuing that solid form. Well done, Alice. Thank you very much for taking on Spellbinder. - Thank you. - Alice has finished off our specialist subjects very strongly, so let's take a look at the leaderboard. Alice has reclaim that lead, now sitting comfortably on 200 points, Minjae has 100 points, Danica has 90 points, and Max has 80 points. So unfortunately we need to eliminate our first player today on the show, and I'm sorry to say it is you, Max. Thank you very much for playing. A $100 bank account is yours. What will you do with the money? - Gonna to spend it on some Civ VI expansions. - What's that, Max? - A strategy video game, and I'm gonna buy the expansions. Yeah. - Nice choice, Max. Thanks for coming, and all the best with cricket. - Thank you. - And congratulations to our three remaining players. For them, that's one step closer to the Brain Buster. - Only three players left, which means we're about to see our final two compete for the top spot. Only one will be going home with that big cash prize, though. - Thanks, Mikey, and before he can get to that sweet cash prize, we have our Brain-Teaser now. So all of our players today have gone through their specialist subject rounds, and we are left with two options for our players to choose from. Today those options are Sequencer and Reo Rangatira. So, Alice, Danica and Minjae, please select which one you would like to play now. Thank you, everyone, for voting. We will start with Alice, who has chosen... Danica would like to play... And Minjae would also like to play... Clean sweep. Let's play Sequencer. Danica and Minjae have some serious catching up to do for Alice, or will Alice manage to get some more points on the board? Let's find out now. Good luck. Here comes your first sequence for the Brain-Teaser. In which order were these gaming consoles released? Danica. - Sega Genesis, Sony PlayStation, PlayStation 2. - Danica currently in the danger spot, hoping to avoid elimination. (DING!) That will help. In which order were these animated movies released? Danica. - The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Despicable Me, Zootopia. (DING!) That is correct. Finally,... Arrange these New Zealand actors in order of when they were born from earliest to most recent. (BUZZ!) No answer there, so that is our Brain-Teaser complete. Thank you, everyone, for playing. Let's take a look at our final leaderboard. Alice still has 200 points, Danica now has 150 points, and Minjae has 100 points. So unfortunately, Minjae, I'm sorry to say you have been eliminated from Brain Busters. Thank you very much for playing. You do have a $100 bank account now, so what will you do with the money? - I'll probably just save up for something greater later. - Very wise of you, Minjae. Thank you for coming on the show, and congratulations to Alice and Danica. For them, it's now on to the Brain Buster. - One winner will be going to Amygdala, and the other will be going home. Who will be today's champ? We'll find out after the break. Who will be today's champ? We'll find out after the break. * - Hoki mai ano. We've gone through Mega Memory, our specialist subject rounds, the Brain-Teaser, and now it's time for the big one ` the Brain Buster. - It's show time for the girls. Alice and Danica, well done for making it this far. But as we all know, there can only be one winner. Alice, I know you like to dance. Tell us about that. - Oh, yeah. I do ballet and contemporary. Yeah. - Nice. You ready to boogie your way through to victory? - Hope so. - Best of luck. Danica, baking is one of your things that you're into. - Yep. - Tell us about that. - I started baking when I was very young with my mum, and now I'm doing cupcakes, and they're, like, my speciality. - Nice. I'm sure Mum is proud that you made it this far. You ready to take it a step further and go to Amygdala? - Absolutely. - Best of luck to you both. It's now time to jump onto our zip lines, and let's get ready to fly. Here we go. Fly! Two young entrepreneurs about to battle it out at the ultimate obstacle course. Alice got a huge score in Mega Memory and a great round of Spellbinder. Can she blitz through the Brain Buster? Whoa, she really is blitzing through. I don't even know if she looked at her code. Did she? Danica enters the Corpus Callosum. Let's see now. Does Alice have the code? It doesn't look good. Danica's nailed it. Alice, I think you're going to have to go back, girl. Go, go, go! Danica's almost at the top of the Parietal Lobe already. Hopefully Alice has the code memorised now. She had to go back through the Corpus Callosum. Danica is miles ahead. Yes, there is still room for Alice, but she will need to boost it. Danica's on the frontal lobe. Oh, man, Alice is racing her way through the tunnel. Danica's just about at the DNA molecule ladder, and here comes Alice. She might actually catch up. Danica's trying to find the correct combination, and she's got it and can now head to the finish. Alice is right there, though. Oh, and Alice got her combination. It's neck-and-neck now through the Basal Ganglia. Alice overtakes. No way! - Wow! Hit the buzzer, Danica. Still gotta hit it. That is our race. Wow. (LAUGHS) Sort out the handshakes later. Guys, that race had it all. That was very intense. Danica, we'll start with you. How was the race for you? - PANTS: It was fun. - Really enjoyed it? - Tiring, though, yeah. - Outstanding. - Now tell me, Danica, what's the experience been like today on Brain Basters? - Amazing. So much fun. - I'm glad to hear it, and you've been rewarded with a $100 bank account, so congratulations. What will you do with that money? - Probably put it into my candle business and try and start some new things. - Awesome. All the best with that, Danica. Alice. - Oh my gosh. - Very lucky, I think. - I can't believe that. - What happened? Walk us through it. - Well, I thought I saw the wrong code, I think, at the start, and so I was like, 'Oh, I've already seen the code'. So I skipped past it, and I had to go back and do it again. - Ah, right, and then you managed to catch up. You took out the challenge. Congratulations, Alice. One thing left to do, and that is taking on Amygdala. Alice, you've made it to Amygdala. Congratulations. - Thank you. - Happy to be here? - Yeah, for sure. - You've done amazing. I'm sure your family is very proud of you as well. What would they be saying watching at home right now? - 'Go, Alice. You've got it'. Yeah. - 'You've got it'. All the way? Can we get 10 out of 10? - Oh, I don't know. I'll try. - That's the point. Well, if you get ten out of ten, Alice, you're going to be walking away with $350. - (SIGHS) That's a lot. - It is a lot. - Yeah. - Help out with the sewing business? - Yeah, maybe. I could get some more material in for that. - Who knows? Well, we do have to get to that stage first, so let's get into these questions. - OK. - Best of luck to you, Alice. - Thank you. - Which brand of milk and dairy products rhymes with 'banker?' - Anchor. (DING!) - Correct. Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Joey, Chandler and Ross are characters in which popular television show? - Friends. (DING!) - Great show, isn't it? - (CHUCKLES) Yeah. - Is chorizo a Dutch city or a Spanish sausage? - A Spanish sausage. (CHUCKLES) (DING!) - Sure is. There's also a Mexican chorizo sausage as well. - Oh. - Which American city has a park named Central Park? - New York. (DING!) - Correct. Which New Zealand bird is on Trade Me's logo? - The kiwi. (DING!) - Kiwi is correct. - What is a crouton made from? - Bread. I think. - You think? - I think so. - Could it be something else? - Mm, I'm not sure. I think it's bread. - So we're locking in bread? - Locking in bread. (DING!) - It is correct. Which out of Ratchet and Clank is a robot? - I'll say Clank. - Heard of Ratchet and Clank? - No. - Why Clank and not Ratchet? - I don't know. Maybe, like, cos he's, like, got clanky metal. I don't know. Just a guess. (DING!) - It's the right guess. Well done. You're spot on about the metal clanky stuff as well. In the Apple logo, is the apple bitten on the left or right side? - The right. - So does that mean you're staring at the back of an iPhone. It's on the right. - I don't have an iPhone, but I think it's the right. I'm not sure, but I think it's the right. (DING!) You are correct. - (CHUCKLES) - And a fun fact ` the bite is actually there to show scale so it's clear the logo is an apple and not a cherry. - Oh. - The more you know. Which first name of a famous rock and roller rhymes with 'pelvis?' - Elvis. (DING!) - You are correct. Final Amygdala question. All right so far. - (EXHALES) This is the scary one. - Can we get that perfect score? - Oh, I really hope so. That would be good. - Shall I read the question now? - Go ahead. - Which country calls its sweet potato the kumara? - New Zealand. - Could be anywhere else in the world. - Pretty sure it's New Zealand. - For a perfect ten out of ten in Amygdala. - Yep. - Does not happen often. - (SIGHS) - Can we do it here? (DING!) You are correct. Alice, congratulations. Let's take a look. You've won $350, but because you have received a perfect score, Alice, we are going to double it, meaning you have won $700. - Oh my gosh. - Alice, congratulations. That was a brilliant, brilliant showing there in Amygdala. Well played. What are you going to do with a whopping $700? - You get an awful lot of fabric with that. - (LAUGHTER) - Oh, let's see. Sewing supplies, maybe some new dancewear. I guess we'll see. - Alice, it's been a pleasure having you here on the show. Congratulations. $700. - Thank you so much. - Whoo-hoo! Alice, I said that you would boogie your way all the way to victory, and you've done exactly that. You happy with your result? - Very happy. - Well done, and you should be. If you think you could take on the Brain Buster just like our girl Alice, jump online and head to HEIHEI Games. - Thank you so much for joining us today. Until next time, that's it for Brain Busters. Thank you, NZ on Air.
