Maths to memory. We start with four, but in the end, there can be only one. - Mikey Falesiu. Ready as always. Our final two players will be tested here on the ultimate obstacle course to see if they got what it takes to be the champ. Will they be able to handle the heat, Chris? - We will find out shortly, Mikey. And don't forget, you can play from home as well. So, let's meet today's Brain Busters. Captions by Stephanie Phan. Captions were made with the support of NZ On Air. www.able.co.nz Copyright Able 2021 - Nau mai haere mai, and welcome to Brain Busters. Today, we have four players hoping they've got what it takes to be called the ultimate Brain Buster. We'll start with Mega Memory before we move into our specialist subject rounds, where our players can choose from six of our options, where they'll hope to gain enough points to stay in this game and avoid elimination. So let's meet our players now. Firstly, Ofa ` a keen netball player, a beast, some might say, at netball. But not only that, you would like to be a neurosurgeon when you're a bit older. What makes you want to do that? - I want to inspire other students out there 'cause I don't think there are many neurosurgeons in the world right now. - No, I highly doubt it. So, Ofa, it's a big task, but we've got to focus on Brain Busters first. Ready to take it on? - Yep. - Good to hear it. Shyamal, welcome to the show. What do we like to do? - I like to do maths. - So do we think that's going to help you a lot here on Brain Busters? - Well, hopefully. - We will find out. Good luck to you. Anthony, welcome to the show. Baking's your thing. What do we love to bake? - I love to bake cakes and cookies. - Ooh, favourite type of cake? - Sponge cake. - Delicious. We also have Jasmine. Welcome to the show, Jasmine. Now, I see you've actually brought along what appears to be some juggling balls. - Yes, I have. - You wouldn't happen to be able to do a wee demo for us, could you? - OK. - Oh, yeah, Jasmine. Go! Look at that. Well, clearly, Jasmine means business, so she's brought out the juggling balls as well. So let's get straight into our first round of the day. It's time to play Mega Memory. Time to put some points on the board for our players. 90 seconds will go onto the clock. Good luck. Your time starts now. Who is the main baddie in Avengers: Infinity War? Jasmine. - Thanos. - (DING!) - What is the square root of 16? Shyamal. - Four. - (DING!) - Which Katy declared "You're going to hear me roar"? Ofa. - Katy Perry. - (DING!) - Which video game series has pole-vaulters, snorkelers and bucketheads? - Shyamal. - Plants vs. Zombies. - (DING!) - Is ski jumping in the summer or winter Olympics? Ofa. - Winter. - (DING!) - Beginning with B, which U.S. city is also a type of bun? Jasmine. - Boston. - (DING!) - Is maple syrup usually poured on pancakes or pizza? Ofa. - Pancakes. - (DING!) - A 52-card deck contains how many face cards? Jasmine. - 16. - (BUZZ!) - 12. Beginning with J, what item of clothing are made by Levi's? Ofa. - Jeans. - (DING!) - Is the Washington Post a landmark or a newspaper? Anthony. - Newspaper. - (DING!) - Which internet browser comes installed on Apple computers? Anthony. - Safari. - (DING!) - In the movie WALL-E, who does WALL-E fall in love with? Ofa. - EVE. - (DING!) - What country does a Canadian come from? - (HOOTER SOUNDS) Jasmine. - Canada. - ...is the correct answer as we hear time up there. Great job, everyone. Thank you very much for playing Mega Memory. Let's take a look at the leaderboard. Ofa has 50 points. Shyamal has 20 points. Anthony has 20 points, and Jasmine also has 20 points. So we now move into our specialist subject rounds, and as we currently have a three-way tie, we will simply go from left to right, which means, Shyamal, you will be starting first. What would you like to play? - Identifier. - Thank you very much. Let's play Identifier. Shyamal. Please step forward. (SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC) You said we love maths at the start, Shyamal. So, what do we think about science? - Hopefully as equal. - Really good at it? Let's find out now. Good luck, Shyamal. Here comes your first Identifier. Hoping to get off to a good start here. Needed to swap it out for Malawi though. Correct. Nicely done, Shyamal. Nicely played there, Shyamal. Well done. What changed there for Shyamal? Is it right? Yes. A final Identifier. And it is correct. Nicely done, Shyamal. Well played here, especially towards the end. Thank you for taking on Identifier. Shyamal has the lead with 120 points. Ofa has 50 points. Anthony has 20 points, and Jasmine also has 20 points. Time now for our second player to take on their specialist subject round. That player is Anthony. What will you be playing, Anthony? - Sequencer. - Thanks for that. Let's play Sequencer. Anthony, please step forward. I'll take you're pretty good with orders and sequences being a baker, so hopefully this should be a walk in the park for you, right? Let's find out. Good luck, Anthony. Here comes your first sequence. READS: In what order did these events occur in Australia from earliest to most recent? Nice start. READS: In which order were these animated movies released? Correct. READS: Arrange these parts of a powhiri in order they occur. Needed to swap. Sorry, Anthony. READS: Arrange the Lord of the Rings books in the order of the trilogy. Are you a Lord of the Rings fan, Anthony? - No. - Think you got the order though? - Um, let's see. - All right. Well played. READS: In what order did these events occur from the earliest to latest? Very well played. Finally for Sequencer. In what order were these influential women born? Final one, Anthony. How do we feel? - I hope I get this right. - I hope so, too. Our final Sequencer. Yes, nicely done there, Anthony ` a really great round. Thank you so much for taking on Sequencer. Shyamal has 120 points. Anthony also has 120 points now. Ofa has 50 points, and Jasmine has 20 points. So, two of our players have already taken on their specialist subject rounds, but all four of our players are wondering if they can head to the Brain Buster. - Actions are what matter the most when it comes to the ultimate obstacle course. I hope they've been training their upper body, Chris, because they're going to need it when it comes to the Parietal Lobe. I'm sure they're more than ready for it, Mikey. And don't forget, you can play from home as well. Just hop online to HEIHEI Games. Don't go anywhere. We'll see you a muri i te whakata. * Nau mai hoki mai, and welcome back to Brain Busters. Just before the break, we had Shyamal and Anthony take on their specialist subject rounds, and coming up to the front now is Jasmine. What would you like to play? - Spellbinder. - Thank you, Jasmine. Let's play Spellbinder. Jasmine, please step forward. (INTENSE MUSIC) How did we get into juggling, Jasmine? - My dad taught me. - Wow! Really good. You're going to go far with it? - Maybe. - Maybe join the circus? - (CHUCKLES) Not that far. (CHRIS LAUGHS) - Well, in the meantime, let's focus on Spellbinder now. 20 points for every word you spell correct. Here is your first word. Magpie. - (DING!) - Correct. - Static. - (DING!) - Well done. Mistral. - Use that in a sentence, please. - The violent mistral wind blows from the north-west over southern France. - (BUZZ!) - A-L there, sorry, Jasmine. Perspire. - (BUZZ!) - P-E-R. Your next word is 'conscious'. - (BUZZ!) - Needed an S before the C, sorry, Jasmine. Your final word is 'merino'. - (DING!) - That is correct. Well done to finish off there, Jasmine. Maybe just was spelling a little bit too quick for a couple of those words. Definitely could have got some more points there. Still, great effort. Thank you very much for taking on Spellbinder. Shyamal and Anthony still share the lead with 120 points. We have Jasmine now on 80 points, and Ofa has 50 points. So we have just one player remaining to take on their specialist subject round, and that player is Ofa. So what would you like to play? - Equaliser. - Thank you very much. Let's play Equaliser. Please step forward, Ofa. Congratulations, first of all ` first place after Mega Memory, an impressive 50 points proving why you should be a neurosurgeon. The question is ` can we back it up? Let's find out. - 62. - (DING!) - Well done. - 189. - (DING!) - Nice! - 47? - (BUZZ!) - 127. - 384. - (DING!) - Speedy on that one. - 431. - (BUZZ!) - 93.5. The final equation, Ofa, is ` - 4. - (DING!) - ...is the correct answer to your final Equaliser. Well played. Thank you so much for taking on Equaliser. And just like that, we have finished our specialist subject rounds. So let's take a look at the leaderboard. Ofa takes back the lead with 130 points. Shyamal has 120 points. Anthony also has 120 points, then we have Jasmine on 80 points. So, unfortunately, we need to eliminate our first player today on Brain Busters, and I'm sorry to say it's you, Jasmine. Great effort today. You get to go home with a $100 bank account. What will you be doing with the money? - How many can you buy with a hundred dollars? - Depends what kind of books, I guess, Jasmine. Let's go for lots. More books, the better, right? - Agreed. - Awesome, Jasmine. Thanks for playing. And congratulations to our three remaining players. For them, it's one step closer to the Brain Buster. - The odds just got better for our three remaining players. Very soon, our top two will be jumping, climbing and racing their way through the ultimate obstacle course. Let's hope they've been training for it. - Thanks, Mikey. And before they have the chance to get to the Brain Buster, we have our brain teaser. Now, all of our players, they have gone through their specialist subject rounds, and we are left with two options for our players to choose from. Today, those options are Reo Rangatira and Blueprinter. So, Ofa, Shyamal and Anthony, please select which one you would like to play now. Thank you all for voting. We'll start with Ofa, who has decided to play Reo Rangatira. Shyamal would like to play Blueprinter, and Anthony has chosen Blueprinter. Here we go. Let's play Blueprinter. 10 points separating all of our players, so anyone's game at this stage. So, of course, for Blueprinter, you'll have 30 seconds to have a look at what the Blueprinter is, and then you'll just simply buzz in, and give me the answer when you think you've got it. Best of luck. Here comes your Blueprinter. It's Moscow Kremlin. Your time starts now. The name Kremlin means fortress inside a city, and, indeed, it is a fortress. There are five palaces and four cathedrals within its walls, and previously it was home to the Tsar. In modern times, it serves as the Russian president's official residence and as a museum. 10 seconds left. Time's up. Please buzz in when you think you know the answer. Here comes your first one. Shyamal. - The Senate. - (DING!) - Well done, Shyamal. Next. Anthony. - Senate Square. - (DING!) - It is. Nicely played, Anthony. Third. Ofa. - Secret Gardens. - (DING!) - Impressive. Nice work so far. Next one. Shyamal. - Tsar Bell. - (BUZZ!) - Unfortunately, not the Tsar Bell. - And your last one. Ofa. - Tsar Bell. - (DING!) - That is. Well played to all of you. Thank you very much for taking on our brain teaser. Let's have a look now at our final scores. Ofa now has 190 points. Anthony has 150 points, and Shyamal has 120 points. So a very close game indeed. We do now need to eliminate our second player, and I'm sorry to say it's you, Shyamal. Great effort today. What will you be doing with your $100 bank account? - I'll be putting it towards a new PC. - Smart choice, Shyamal. Enjoy that. Thank you so much for coming up to the show, and congratulations to Ofa and Anthony. For them, it's now on to the Brain Buster. - Started with four, and now we're down to two. Who will have the grit to take out the Brain Buster? We'll find out very soon. * - The answer is ` Hoki mai ano. We've gone through Mega Memory, our specialist subject rounds, the Brain-Teaser, and now it's time for the big one ` the Brain Buster. - Well done to our final two players ` Anthony and Ofa. You guys ready to take on the ultimate obstacle course? Nice. Let's jump up into our zip lines and let's get ready to fly. Here we go. Three, two, one. Fly! - Anthony and Ofa ` today's the day you take on the Brain Buster. Ofa starts off with an impressive twirl down the neurotransmitter. Anthony, just behind. Not sure Ofa got a long enough look at that code. Anthony is doing well on the molecule steps. He's studying that code for the next obstacle. Heading there now via the corpus callosum. Ofa forgot her code. She's going to have to go back and have another look. But Anthony remembers his and unlocks the parietal lobe. Ofa had a small hiccup there with the code, but she's now on a roll. I wonder if Anthony is aware how much she's caught up. He's going to have to climb quicker than that to keep his lead. But Ofa's back in the game and snatches the lead back from Anthony. Out of the tunnel and onto the frontal lobe. Ofa wants to be a neurosurgeon one day, which is all about nervous systems, but she ain't nervous up there. Here comes Anthony, determined to catch up. But Ofa's activated her side of the Brain Buster pretty quickly. She's off to the basal ganglia. The code hiccup earlier barely slowed her down. She flew through that course, like it was nothing. Tu meke. Anthony, you had a good run, man. Had the lead for a bit at the start, but Ofa really boosted it to the end. Solid effort ` you should be proud of yourself for making it this far and completing the notorious brain buster. Another impressive race, Chris. - There goes the buzzer ` Anthony completed the race. Awesome job to both of you. Anthony, we'll start with you as well. Got a bit caught up on the wall there, but managed to push your way through it. How much fun was the course for you, Anthony? - It was really fun. - Great to hear. Thank you so much for coming on the show today. Second place to you means you've got yourself a $100 bank account. What will you be doing with the money? - I'll probably save it up. - Nice work, Anthony. Hey, feel free to send me any baking goods as well, OK? Cheers, Anthony. Ofa, you had a bit of a slip-up there. Managed to work your way back into it. You've taken it out. What was going on through your head? - Just go, go, go. I just wanted to come first. - And that's what you've done. One thing left to do, Ofa. And, of course, that is taking on Amygdala. Well, Ofa, if your Brain Busters performance is anything to go by, being a neurosurgeon now should be a breeze. You've done amazing today. Happy with how you've done? - Yeah. Really happy. - Yeah. You seriously have absolutely nailed it. You scored 190 points leading up to this. Anthony, who you went up against, also did well ` 150 points for him. We combine it together, and you're playing for $340 Ready to go? - Yeah. - Let's do it. What is the tallest structure in Auckland City? - The Sky Tower. - (DING!) - Yep. Definitely not a trick question. That's right. Olympic medals are gold, silver, and which other colour? - Bronze. - (DING!) - No bronze for you though, always gold, right? Which animal appears in a book title with a witch and a wardrobe? - A lion. - (DING!) - It is lion, of course. His name is Aslan. Well done. - Which sport uses clay targets thrown in the air? - Shooting? - Locking in shooting? - (DING!) - Correct. Well done. Also known as skeet shooting. Which show features a blue character called Grover? - Oh my God. I don't know. - Anything running through your head? - I can't think of anyth` Pass. - (BUZZ!) - Sesame Street is the show we were looking for. What colour are limes? - Green. - (DING!) - Of course, it's green. What sport has par-5 holes? - Golf. - A lot of uncertainty behind that answer. - Golf. I'm sticking with golf. - Sticking with golf? - (DING!) - You are right with golf. And finally for Amygdala. You've done really well, Ofa. Which country was the main filming location for the Lord of the Rings? - New Zealand. - Again, so much doubt in your answers. - New Zealand, yeah, New Zealand. - Done well ` past $200. Can we add to it with this? - (DING!) - New Zealand is the correct answer to our final Amygdala question. Congratulations, Ofa. Let's take a look. $238! Well played in the end there. You did really well. What are you going to do with the money, Ofa? - Um, save some and probably use the rest to buy clothes or shoes. - Nice choices, Ofa. Congratulations once again. And I'm sure we're going to see you being a neurosurgeon one day. Great having you on the show. $238. - To'atu, Ofa. Awesome job. Did you enjoy your experience here on the Brain Buster? - Yes. - Glad you did. If you think you can take out the Brain Buster just like our girl, Ofa, jump online and head to HEIHEI Games. - Thank you so much for joining us today. Until next time, that's it for Brain Busters.
