- We start with four, but in the end, there can be only one. Kia ora, I'm Chris Kirk, and this is Brain Busters. Who has the mind power to make it all the way through the rounds and end up at this ` the Brain Buster? - King Mikey Falesiu at your service. I hope today's top two players got their game faces on because the Brain Buster is legit. Get ready, because it's about to get real. - It sure is, Mikey. Thanks for that. And don't forget, you can play from home as well. So let's meet today's Brain Busters. Captions were made with the support of NZ On Air. www.able.co.nz Copyright Able 2021 Nau mai, haere mai and welcome to Brain Busters. Today we have four players hoping they've got what it takes to be called the ultimate Brain Buster. We'll start with Mega Memory before we move into our specialist subject rounds, where our players can choose from six other options. They'll hope to gain enough points to stay in this game and avoid elimination. So let's meet our players now. Firstly, Priya, welcome to the show. Now, I hear you're right into writing some music. Can you tell us a little bit about that? - So I do a lot of music in all my spare time. My best friend, Amanda, and I are currently writing a new album, which'll hopefully work out. - Oh, awesome. How long have we been working on that for? - Quite a few months. Just any time we get, really. - Awesome. Well, I hope it goes well. - Thank you. - We've also got Caleb on the show. Caleb, you're right into your ice hockey? - Yes. - Pretty handy at it as well. Won a few medals. - Yeah. Four national gold medals, two most valuable goalies and a bunch of other ones, which I shouldn't list cos I'm going to run out of time. - (LAUGHS) Can we add a Brain Buster gold medal to that as well? - Yeah, hopefully. - That is the question. We'll find that out later on. Tapeka, great to have you on the show as well. Now, you're right into manu korero. How long have you been competing in that for? - A couple of years, yeah. - Actually took out first place last year as well. Congratulations. What was your speech about? - My speech was about reducing, reusing and recycling, and how we can go back to our matua, tipuna and use those ways from atua Maori by using the fertilities from the taiao and making use of all those things. - Awesome stuff. Great to have you on the show. And we've also got Cole. Now, Cole, you've actually played inline hockey with Caleb. - Yeah, I ended up playing against them. - So you guys didn't even know you were going to be here on the show, and now you're competing not only in inline hockey but now on Brain Busters as well. - Yeah, it's surprising. - Do you think you're gonna be able to beat him? - Hopefully. - Let's find out. Great to have you all here. We'll get straight into our first round of the day. It's Mega Memory. Time to start building up those points right now. Ten points if our players get it right. But buzz in and fail to do so, our players will lose 10 points. Good luck. Your time starts now. On Sesame Street, what colour is Cookie Monster? Tapeka. - Blue. - What is the next prime number after five? Priya. - Seven. - Did Roald Dahl write The Mitts or The Twits? Cole. - Twits. Which golden liquid spread on toast is made by bees? Tapeka. - Honey. - Beginning with D, which type of book tells you the meanings of words? Cole. - Dictionary. - In which decade was actor George Clooney born? Caleb. - '60s. Which is further north, Fiji or Norway? Tapeka. - Norway. In Hey Diddle Diddle, which animal jumped over the moon? Caleb. - Cow. - Which British sci fi series features a time lord? Caleb. - Dr Who. Which country is the traditional home of the sport called pato? (BUZZER) Argentina. Which platform does the Hogwarts Express leave from? Priya. - Nine and three-quarters. - We are out of time. A great start to Mega Memory. Thank you all very much for playing. Let's take a look at the leaderboard. It's very close after Mega Memory. So now we move into our specialist subject rounds. And starting us off today will be Priya. So what have you decided to play? - Equaliser. - Thank you very much. Let's play Equaliser. Priya, please step forward. So what made you want to get into writing music, Priya? - I'm not sure. It's just always been a big part of my life, yeah. - Nice! It's so cool that you're doing it. Now going from music to maths, though. Ready to take on Equaliser? - I think so. - Let's get into it. Here comes your first equation. Great start. Correct. Very close. Awesome stuff. - 49. - Finally... Is correct. A great way to finish Equaliser. Well played. I think there was at least one, if not two, you could have got as well. But still some tough ones in there. So well done. Thank you for taking on Equaliser. - Thank you. - Priya now has first place. So up next is Cole. What would you like to play? - Sequencer. - Thank you very much. Let's play Sequencer. Cole, please step forward. So not just inline hockey you play. Also right into your football? We support any Premier League teams? - Manchester United. - Nice choice. Prefer Liverpool, but hey, it's all right. - We didn't get destroyed 7-2, did we? - (LAUGHS) Rough call. OK, moving right along, then. Let's get into Sequencer now. Good luck. Here comes your first one. Arrange these technological events in order of occurrence. Happy with the order given to you? - Yeah. You would think message would have come before phone call. - Needed to have the order round the other way, sorry. In which order were these technologies first introduced? Slowly moving Velcro into the middle. Should we have done it? Should we have left it? You're right, Cole. Well done. In which order were these sports included in the Olympic Games, from earliest to most recent. Right into your sport, Cole. Would like to get this one correct. - Just not so much the Olympics. - Done well. In which order did construction begin on these landmarks? - Don't know it. (CHUCKLES) - Moved it; moved it back. Wasn't the right order either way, though. St Basil's Cathedral first, then La Sagrada Familia second. Finally, Mt Rushmore. Last Sequencer. Arrange these hit songs into the order in which they were released. - I don't know any of these. - Cole, final Sequencer. Says he doesn't know any of the songs. How's he done with the order, though? Almost there. Similar story, just needed to swap Jealous and Meet Again around. But, Cole, thank you so much for taking on Sequencer. It's still Priya at the top. So two of our players have already gone through their specialist subject rounds, but all four of our players have their fingers crossed, hoping they can get to the Brain Buster. - Here on the Brain Buster, one wrong move can be a game changer. Hopefully not with today's final two. I'm pretty sure they're ready. - Yeah, they definitely are, Mikey. And don't forget, you can play from home as well. Simply head online to... Don't go anywhere. We'll see you a muri i te whakata. * - Nau mai, hoki mai. Just before the break, we had Priya and Cole take on their specialist subject rounds. And playing next is Caleb. What would you like to play, Caleb? - Identifier. - Thank you very much. Let's play Identifier. Caleb, please step forward. All right, ice hockey champion. Can we become the Brain Busters champion? - Hopefully. - Starts here as we get into Identifier. Best of luck. Here comes number one. Nicely done. Identify three body parts that assist respiration. Sure you didn't want to put ankle in there? - (CHUCKLES) - Let's see if you're right. Yeah, of course. Well done. Selected green leafy vegetables, then swapped it out for jelly. - Um... - Was it the right thing to do? - Probably not. - Yeah, should've left it. Always get a little bit confusing with that, but you've got this one? - Think so. - Awesome stuff, Caleb. Well done. Finally... Last one. Finishing strong hopefully. Yes. Caleb, well played. Really, really great finish there as well. Thank you so much for taking on Identifier. Caleb has taken the lead now. So we do just have one more player remaining to take on their specialist subject round. That player is Tapeka. What would you like to play? - Reo Rangatira. - Awesome. Let's play Reo Rangatira. Tapeka, please step forward. Last to take on your specialist subject round, so are we feeling less pressure or more pressure now? - I'm feeling confident. - Confident? That's good to hear. All right, let's get into your te reo-focused questions. Best of luck. Here comes number one. What is an English word for rangatira? - Um, a leader. - Ae, that is correct. Please spell moana. Kia ora. What is a Maori way to say timetable or schedule? - Wataka. - Correct. What is a Maori name for the nocturnal bird known as a morepork? - Um, moa. (BUZZER) Ko wai te atua e mohiotia whanuitia ana mo nga ahuatanga ki te huarere? - Ranginui. (BUZZER) And finally, please spell whakapapa. Ae, that is correct. Well done. Awesome job there. Thank you so much for completing Reo Rangatira. So we have now completed our specialist subject rounds. Let's take a look at the leaderboard. Caleb holds on to top spot. Tapeka moves into second. So we do now need to eliminate our first player from Brain Busters. And unfortunately it is you, Cole. Sorry to see you go. But you do get to take home a $100 bank account. So what will we be doing with the money? - Probably saving it or getting, like, a new pair of shoes or something. - Nice choice. Football boots, maybe? - Nah, I already got some. - Fair enough. All right, Cole, best of luck for the rest of the season. Thanks for coming on to the show. And congratulations to our three remaining players. For them, it's one step closer to the Brain Buster. - Three players left. Two will race, but there can only be one winner that will go through to the Amygdala to turn their points into money. - And before we can focus on that money, Mikey, we have to worry about the Brain Teaser which comes up right now. All of our players have gone through their specialist subject rounds and we are left with two options for our players to choose from. Today those options are Blueprinter and Spellbinder. So Priya, Caleb and Tapeka, please select which one you would like to play now. Thank you all for voting. We will start with Priya, who has decided to play Spellbinder. Caleb would like to play Spellbinder as well, and Tapeka would like to play Spellbinder. There you go. Three for three. Let's play Spellbinder. It's 30 points in it and it's 30 points up for grabs for each correct word, so anything can happen here. Let's get into it right now. Here comes your first word. Please spell raspberry. Tapeka. (BUZZER) Sorry, Tapeka. Your next word is oriental. Tapeka. (BUZZER) Just the one R, sorry. Spell simplicity. Caleb. Correct. Caleb extending his lead. Introvert. Priya. Correct. Your final word is widower. Tapeka. That is correct, and that is the brainteaser complaint. Thank you all very much for playing. Let's take a look at the final leaderboard. So Tapeka, I'm sorry to say you have been eliminated from Brain Busters. Thank you so much for coming on to the show. A $100 bank account is all yours. So what will you do with that money? - I might save it. - Smart choice, Tapeka. Thank you so much for coming on the show. Best of luck with more manu korero. And congratulations to Priya and to Caleb. For them, it's now on to the Brain Buster. - The ultimate obstacle course where our top two players will battle it out to see who will be crowned as today's Brain Buster champion. Stay right there. We'll find out who next. * - It is the law in the USA that no person who is still alive can appear on a coin. Nau mai, hoki mai and welcome back to Brain Busters. We've had an excellent show so far. And it comes down to this for two players as they take on the Brain Buster. - Caleb and Priya are our final two contestants. Well done to you both on making it this far. You guys ready for the ultimate obstacle course? Awesome. Let's jump up on our ziplines and let's get ready to fly. Here we go. Three, two, one,... fly! We've got Caleb, a four-time national gold medallist in ice hockey, entering the Brain Buster today. And he takes on Priya. Will she be riding a victory tune? Or will she be singing the blues when it's all over? Already on to the Molecule Steps, both players are doing well. Get those codes and enter the Corpus Callosum. Whoops, Priya's going to have to start the obstacle again. Here she goes. Hopefully that won't cost her too much time. Caleb's entering his code into the Hippocampus console. Oh, but Priya's right there too ` a great recovery. And both their walls crashed down at the same time. It's anyone's race right now, both making quick work of the Parietal Lobe. They now enter the Tunnel Webs. A nice technique from Priya. And there you have it, both players make it to the Frontal Lobe. The DNA Molecule ladders await. Who's going to make it first? Both Caleb and Priya using a mix of speed and caution to make it across. Caleb now having a go at the switches. Or will Priya beat him to it? No, Caleb activates his side of the Brain Buster. He's taking his time getting down the ladder, and now Priya's activated her switch. Through the Basal Ganglia now. Here comes Priya. This is going to be a close race, Chris! (LAUGHTER) - An epic finish there from Priya. You OK? - (LAUGHS) - We'll get you up. There you go. I'll get you to come across this way, Priya, as well. We'll start with you, Priya. How much fun was that course for you? - It was a great ending. (LAUGHS) - It was. Had to end in great style, right? We're all OK, though? - I'm great. - That's the main thing. Well, congratulations, Priya. Second place today ` just. Very, very close indeed. Meaning you've got yourself a $100 bank account. What will you be doing with that money? - I'll either take my family plus Jane and Taylor out for lunch, or my... (PANTS) Ooh! My friend Nadine's moving to Canada, so I might do something with her. - Oh, very nice. Both wonderful options there, Priya. It's been an absolute pleasure having you on the show. I'll let you catch your breath now. Let's move on to Caleb. Well done. It was back and forth there for a little bit. What was going through your head the whole time? - Well, I could hear some of the stuff happening over there and I could tell it was really close. Near the end I started to get a bit nervous. - Yeah. But pushed through and got the result you were after, so congratulations. One more thing left to do, and that is taking on Amygdala. Well, Caleb, you've got another gold medal to add to the collection. - Yeah, hopefully so. - Taken out Brain Busters. Congratulations. Now we've just got Amygdala left to decide how much money you are going to be taking home. You scored 160 points leading up to this, you went up against Priya, who did really well also, scoring 130 points, meaning we're playing for just under $300. 290, in fact. A lot of money. - Yeah. - Let's try and win as much as we can. Best of luck, Caleb. Here comes question number one. Which type of Italian food rhymes with faster? - Pasta. - Of course it is pasta. Nespresso is a type of what? - Coffee capsules? - Nailed it. Well done. Lake Taupo is which country's largest lake? - New Zealand. - It is New Zealand's largest lake, roughly the same size as Singapore, actually, about 616km2. - Wow. - Where would you find a book's epilogue? - At the end. - Is it the end? Pretty sure it's good enough for me. Which fitness brand is named after a New Zealand Olympian? - I don't know. I'm just gonna guess. Uh, Lululemon, I dunno. - Lululemon? Yeah? - Yeah. - Les Mills is the answer. - Oh wow. - Yeah, he actually first attended the Olympics in 1960, where he competed in shotput and discus. - Didn't know that. - There you go. In cricket, a ball hit over the boundary on the full gets how many runs? - Six. Yeah, six points. - It is six. Well done. What are aubergines also known as? - Eggplants. - Quick on that one. Not wasting any time. - Do a bit of cooking, so... My friend always calls them aubergines, so, yeah, I'm pretty confident with that one. - Is it also known as eggplant? You got it. In which part of the human body would dentures be fitted? - In the teeth. Like, so in the mouth. - You think mouth. - Yeah, in the mouth. Mouth is correct. Finally for Amygdala. Does the TV show Breakfast screen in the morning or afternoon? - CHUCKLES: Morning. - No way it could be afternoon? - It's definitely the morning. It's no way. - Definitely morning? - Morning. - For our final Amygdala answer, is it morning? (CHIMING) Sure is. Well played. Let's take a look. $232. - Wow. - Congratulations, Caleb. Well played. What are you going to do with the money? - I'm going to put it towards building up my synthetic ice rink. - Wow. How's that going? - Um, good. I've got a few sheets, maybe 3m x 1.5m. But, yeah, I need to get it a bit bigger. Maybe hopefully get some of my players to take shots on me. Yeah. - Wow. Awesome stuff. Can't wait to see how it gets on. Congratulations, Caleb. $232. - Nice stuff, Caleb. Are you happy with your performance? - Yeah. - You should be, man. If you think you can take the Brain Buster out just like our man Caleb, jump online and head to HeiHei Games. - Thank you so much for joining us today. Until next time, that's it for Brain Busters. Thank you, New Zealand on Air.
