- Four players, three rounds, two players race, one winner takes it all. Kia ora. I'm Chris Kirk, and this is Brain Busters. Get ready for a series of escalating rounds where we test our players on maths, memory, Te Reo, spelling and more before it all leads up to this ` the Brain Buster. - Chilling with your boy Mikey Falesiu. Upper and lower body strength is what today's top two players will need to be the champion of the Brain Buster. Only one winner at the end of the day, so, Chris, let's do this. - Sounds good, Mikey. And don't forget ` you can play from home as well. So let's meet today's Brain Busters. (UPBEAT ELECTRONIC MUSIC) Captions by Julie Taylor. Captions were made with the support of NZ On Air. www.able.co.nz Copyright Able 2021 Nau mai, haere mai. Welcome to Brain Busters. Today, we have four players hoping they've got what it takes to be called the ultimate Brain Buster. We'll start with Mega Memory before we move into our specialist subject rounds, where our players can choose from six of our options. They'll hope to get enough points to stay in this game and avoid elimination. So let's meet today's players. First up, Carmen. Welcome to the show. Live and breathe hockey. - Yeah. - Whole family's into it. - Yeah. - Nice, so who's in our family? - Well, my sister's pretty good. She's hoping to make the Black Sticks. - Oh, wow! So hopefully one day you're looking to be better than your sister. - Hopefully. - So we're quite competitive, then. - Very. - Excellent, Carmen. Chantelle, great to have you here on the show. Quite sporty yourself. Karate is your thing. How did we get into that? - Um, well, my older sister used to do it at her school, and I'd always watch, and then I just was like, I want to try this. (CHUCKLES) - Yeah. More than just try. You've be doing it for quite a long time. And now what belt are we on? - Brown four. - So, how close does that mean we are to black belt? - The next one is brown-black, and the following one is black. - Very impressive, Chantelle. Great to have you here on the show. Ellie, welcome to the show. Live out on a farm down in Timaru. Great to have you here. What do we have on our farm animal-wise? - We have lots of cows and chickens and ducks, and we also have some kunekune pigs. Yeah, some of them had piglets a week ago. - Are they the cutest thing in the world? - Yes. - I bet. Ellie, great to have you here. And we also have Anna-Bella. Welcome to the show, Anna-Bella. Dance is your thing. What style of dance? - I do jazz and hip-hop. - Jazz and hip-hop ` two very contrasting dance styles. Do we find it hard switching between the two? - It's pretty easy to switch between them. - (GROANS) Says you, Anna-Bella; definitely not says me. (LAUGHS) And are we working towards any, like, routines at the moment or performances? - Yeah, I've got a dance concert coming up. - Awesome. Well, good luck for that. - Thank you. And good luck to everyone here on Brain Busters today. Let's get straight into it with our first round. It's time to play Mega Memory. 90 seconds on the clock, as always, for our players, so let's get straight into it. Good luck. Your time starts now. Which is not an Australian state ` Queensland, New South Wales or Texas? Ellie. - Texas. (DING!) - What is worn on your wrist and made by Swatch? Anna-Bella. - A watch. (DING!) - What's green citrus fruit rhymes with mime? Chantelle. - Lime. (DING!) - Which heavy-breathing Star Wars villain wears a black cape and helmet? Carmen. - Darth Vader. (DING!) - Which is commonly found in fuel tanks ` weasel or diesel? Chantelle. - Diesel. (DING!) - Which city is home to the rugby franchise known as the Hurricanes? Ellie. - Wellington. (DING!) - BRB stands for 'be right...' what? Carmen. - Back. (DING!) - Is Simply Squeezed a brand of fruit juice or pimple cream? Chantelle. - Fruit juice. (DING!) - Who did Little Red Riding Hood set off to visit? Chantelle. - Her grandma. (DING!) - On the TV network MTV, what does the 'M' stand for? Anna-Bella. - Music. (DING!) - What type of animal as a flounder? Chantelle. - Fish. (DING!) - Which Elton was the subject of the movie Rocketman? Ellie. - Elton John. (DING!) - The controller of which video game has six buttons, strum and whammy bars? Anna-Bella. - Xbox. (BUZZ!) - Guitar Hero. A hydroelectric power station generates electricity from the flow of what liquid? Ellie. - Water. (DING!) - ...is the correct answer to our final Mega Memory question. Well played, everyone. Really great round there. So let's take a look at the leader board. Chantelle has the lead with 50 points. Ellie is on 40 points. Carmen has 20 points. And Anna-Bella has 10 points. So now we move into our specialist subject rounds, and starting us off today, it will be Anna-Bella. What would you like to play? - Blueprinter, please. - Thank you very much, Anna-Bella. Let's play Blueprinter. Anna-Bella, please step forward. (TENSE MUSIC) So would it be fair to say, Anna-Bella, with all the different dancing we do, we've got a pretty good memory? Gotta memorise all the different dance moves, right? - Yeah. - Hence why the Blueprinter selection? Fair enough. All right. So, you're gonna have 30 seconds to have a look at what the Blueprinter is, and then a further 30 seconds to put in all of your answers. Good luck, Anna-Bella. - Thank you. - Here comes your Blueprinter. Franz Josef Township. Your time starts... now. Nestled above the township, Franz Joseph Glacier, aka Ka Roimata o Hine Hukatere, is a very special place, not only because it's located in a temperate rainforest, but it moves faster than your average glacier at over 50cm per day. Speeds of up to 4m per day have been recorded in the icefall sections. That's time. 30 seconds now to put in your answers, which starts now. (SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC) Five seconds remaining. So unable to get our seventh and final one in there, but still we've got six, so let's hope for six green lights. First one. Franz Josef Glacier is correct. MacDonalds Creek is also correct. Potters Creek unfortunately not correct, though. Neither is that one. Mt Tasman is, though. But Lake Wombat isn't. So a little bit unlucky there, but still a great start. Thank you very much, Anna-Bella, for taking on Blueprinter. - Thank you. - Anna-Bella now and has the lead with 70 points. Chantelle has 50. Ellie i on 40 points. And Carmen has 20 points. So it's time for our second player now to come forward and have a turn at their specialist subject round. That player is Carmen. What would you like to play? - Spellbinder. - Awesome, Carmen. Let's play Spellbinder. Carmen, please step forward. (TENSE MUSIC) How long have we played hockey for, Carmen? - Since I was, like, 5, 6. - So is it pretty much everyone in the family plays it? - Yeah. - Live and breathe hockey. Awesome. All right. Well, let's live and breathe some spelling now as well. Good luck. 20 points for each word you spell correct. Your first word is... lateral. - Can you put that in a sentence, please? - The puzzle involved some lateral thinking. (DING!) - Correct. Saddlery. - Definition, please? - The trade, articles of trade, or shop of a saddler. (BUZZ!) Oh! - Needed another D, and then L-E-R-Y to finish off that one. Rural. (DING!) - Well done. Features. (DING!) - That is correct. Propulsion. - Put that in a sentence, please. - The propulsion system has two jet engines. (BUZZ!) Oh! - S-I-O-N. Very unlucky with that one, but still to a bad effort indeed. Thank you very much for taking on Spellbinder. It's Carmen now in the lead with 80 points. Anna-Bella is close behind on 70. Chantelle has 50 points. And Ellie is on 40 points. So already halfway through our specialist subject rounds, but all four of our players are hoping they've got what it takes to head to the Brain Buster. - It's almost that time for our final two players to smash out the Brain Buster. Let's hope they're up for it, because it will be a challenge. Let 'em know, Chris. - Will do, Mikey. Kia ora for that. And don't forget ` you can play from home as well. Simply head online to Heihei Games. Don't go anywhere. We'll see you a muri i te whakata. - Hoki mai ano. Welcome back to Brain Busters. Just before the break, we had Anna-Bella and Carmen take on their specialist subject round, and coming up to the front now, it is Ellie's turn. What would you like to play, Ellie? - Identifier. - Thank you very much. Let's play Identifier. Ellie, please step forward. (TENSE MUSIC) So, have we named any of our cute kunekune piglets? - Yes, the biggest one is Chunky Monkey. - LAUGHS: Chunky Monkey! What a great name! I guess you're probably hoping for some animal-related Identifiers to pop up as well here. - Yes. - Well, fingers crossed for that. Good luck. And let's get into it now. Yeah, realised it was wrong and switched accordingly. Well played. Correct, Ellie. Got this one, Ellie? Nice work. Happy to see that one there, I bet. - Yep. - No surprise for Ellie. That is correct. Very impressive round here, Ellie. Well done. How are we feeling about this one, Ellie? - Not too sure. - (EXHALES SHARPLY) Yeah. Unlucky there. Ellie, a really, really great start there. Fell away a little towards the end, but very impressive nonetheless. Thank you very much for playing Identifier. - Thank you. - Ellie now has 140 points. Carmen has 80 points. Anna-Bella has 70 points. And Chantelle is on 50. So we have just one player remaining to take on their specialist subject round, and that player is Chantelle. What would you like to play? - Equaliser. - Thank you very much, Chantelle. Let's play Equaliser. Chantelle, please step forward. (TENSE MUSIC) Now, am I right in saying in karate it's all about calculating that perfect move? - You could say that. (CHUCKLES) - (CHUCKLES) So how are we at calculating our Equaliser equations? - Um... Better on paper. (CHUCKLES SOFTLY) - Let's see how we go today. Good luck, Chantelle. Here comes your first equation. (DING!) - Correct. (DING!) - Well done. - 24. (DING!) - Correct. - 15. (DING!) - Awesome job. (BUZZ!) (DING!) - Last quick answer to finish off our Equaliser round. Well played, Chantelle. Thank you very much for taking on Equaliser. - Thank you. - So that is our specialist subject rounds complete. So let's take a look now at the leader board. Chantelle reclaims the lead with 150 points. Ellie has 140 points. Carmen is on 80 points. And Anna-Bella has 70 points. - So, unfortunately, we do need to eliminate our first player today on Brain Busters, and Anna-Bella, I'm sorry to say it is you. The good news is you've got yourself a $100 bank account. What have you decided to do with that money? - I'm gonna save it for buying presents from my family. - That is very nice of you indeed, Anna-Bella. Great to have you on the show, and all the best with the dancing. - Thank you. - And congratulations to our three remaining players. For them, it's one step closer to the Brain Buster. - Only three players left, which means we're about to see our final two compete for the top spot. Only one will be cashing out that big prize. - Thanks, Mikey. And before we can cash out that big prize, we have our Brainteaser. So all of our players today have gone through their specialist subject rounds, and we left with two options for our players to choose from today. Today, those options are Sequencer and Reo Rangatira. So, Carmen, Chantelle and Ellie, please select which one you would like to play now. Thank you, everyone, for voting. We'll start with Carmen, who has chosen... Sequencer. Chantelle would like to play... Sequencer. And Ellie would like to play... Sequencer as well. Three for three. Let's play Sequencer. Carmen has a lot of catching up to do if she wants to avoid elimination. Can she do it? Let's find out now. Good luck. Here comes your first sequence for our Brainteaser. In which order were these animated movies released first to last? Chantelle. - The Little Mermaid, Shrek, The Lego Batman Movie. - Chantelle, already with a lot of points ` would love some more, though. And gets them with a sigh of relief. Arrange these inventions in order from earliest to most recently invented. Ellie. - Transistor, the computer chip, the computer mouse. - Ellie now getting into the points as well. Moving on to our next one. In which order were these authors' novels first published? (BUZZ!) No answer there for our final Sequencer in the Brainteaser. Thank you, everyone, for playing that round. Let's take a look now at our final leader board. Chantelle has 180 points. Ellie has 170 points. Then we have Carmen on 80 points. So we do need to eliminate our second player today on Brain Busters. And, Carmen, I'm sorry to say it is you. It was a big ask having to chase down Chantelle and Ellie. Unfortunately, couldn't do it. But the good news is you've got yourself a $100 bank account. And what will you do with that money, Carmen? - I'll probably just save it. - Smart choice. Thanks for coming on to the show, Carmen. And congratulations to Chantelle and Ellie. For them, it's now on to the Brain Buster. - Who will be today's champion of the Brain Buster? We'll find out soon. Don't go anywhere. - Lachie from North Otago is renting a fishing rod. It cost $12 dollars an hour. How much will 2 hours cost Lachie? - We asked how much it will cost Lachie during a fishing rod for 2 hours. The answer is $30. Welcome back to Brain Busters. We just have two player remaining as they get ready to take on the ultimate obstacle course. It's time for the Brain Buster! - It's the moment of truth for our final two contestants, Chantelle and Ellie. Girls, well done on making it this far. But as we all know, there can only be one winner at the end of the day. Chantelle, music is something that you're into. Tell us about that. - Well, I've just done music for a very long time. So, I do piano, violin and singing. - And was that with your sister, you were saying? - Yeah. Shout-out to Cindy. - Shout-out to Cindy. I'm sure she's proud you made it this far. Are you ready for the Brain Buster? - Yep. - Awesome. And, Ellie, I know riding is something that you like doing in your spare time. Tell us about that. - Well, riding just gives you the opportunity to be creative. - Nice, cos you're gonna need that creativity to get through that Brain Buster. Are you ready? - Yes. - Awesome stuff. Well, girls, it's now time to jump on to out zip lines, and let's get ready to fly. Here we go. Three, two, one, fly! Chantelle versus Ellie. Who will be today's queen of the ultimate obstacle course? 350 points up for grabs for the winner. But getting to Amygdala won't be easy. With players with a strong start. They know what's on the line. Chantelle is a little bit ahead, though, as she enters the Corpus Callosum at speed. Ellie's lost her balance on the Molecule Steps. She'll try again, but it'll put her further behind. Chantelle is on fire, not literally, but she's doing great to stay ahead of Ellie, who's just coming through the Corpus Callosum now. Chantelle is on her way up the Parietal Lobe. Her karate skills could help her karate chop through the Tunnel Web. Here comes Ellie now at the Hippocampus. Fingers crossed code is good. Phew! OK, Ellie, time to boost it. Chantelle is making very good progress across the Frontal Lobe. But Ellie could face a sad and dramatic ending to the story if Chantelle doesn't slow down. DNA Molecule switched time. Chantelle has time on her side to find the correct combination to move on to the finish. There it is. Chantelle activates her side of the Brain Buster. Ellie has to be quick if she wants to stay in the race now. But Chantelle is near the end, which means she is today's Brain Buster champion. Congrats. Ellie, don't let her win discourage you from finishing. You were awesome on our metal maze. I hope to read about it in your autobiography one day. No doubt the kunekune piglets are immensely proud of you, especially Chunky Monkey. Ka pai, Ellie. - That is our race complete. Chantelle, I'll get you to come across this way. Come across. We'll start with you, though, Ellie. Congratulations on today's efforts. Firstly, how much fun was that obstacle course? - Yeah, pretty cool. - Great to hear it. Had a bit of a slip up on the Molecule Steps, but still a fantastic job as well. You should be very proud of yourself The good news is you've got yourself a $100 bank account, Ellie. So, what will you be doing with that money? - Probably just saving it up to get something nice. - Excellent, Ellie. Enjoyed your time today on Brain Buster's? - Yes. - That is the main thing. Congratulations once again. Chantelle, You are today's Brain Buster champion. How does that feel? - Really good. I was so nervous about it, so, yeah. - But you've overcome those nerves, and you've got first place under your belt. One thing left to do, though, Chantelle, and that is taking on Amygdala. Chantelle, congratulations once again, and welcome to Amygdala. How does it feel to be here in the final round? - Really good, yeah. - You've had a fantastic show. You scored 180 points leading up to this point, and Ellie scored 170 points. So some really great scores from the both of you and a great race also. We combine those scores together, and you're playing for $350. - Cool. (CHUCKLES SOFTLY) - More than just cool; it's a lot of money! - Yeah. - You gonna win it all? - I'll try! (CHUCKLES) - That's the plan. Good luck, Chantelle. Here comes your first question. Parmesan is a type of what? - Cheese. (DING!) - It is. What is a pack of cards and part of a ship? - The deck. (DING!) - Correct. In which room would you normally use a Maggi mix? - Kitchen. (DING!) - Correct. In which country is the TV show Wellington Paranormal set? - New Zealand. (DING!) - In which section of the orchestra does the French horn belong? - Woodwind. (BUZZ!) - Oh! - Not woodwind. It's actually the brass section. - Oh! I should've known that. - (CHUCKLES) Which country is home to the Great Wall Motor Company? - Uh... China? I've no idea. Um... I'm just gonna guess China. - Guessing China. - Yeah. - Why are we guessing China? - Cos the Great Wall. I've no idea. Anyway... (DING!) - China is correct. - Ooh! OK. - Well played. A human usually has how many shoulders? - Two. (CHUCKLES) Two. - Surely. - Surely. Surely, it's two. (DING!) - Of course it is two. - Yeah. yeah. - Is the line considered in play or out of play in football? - In play? In play. Yeah, I think it's in play. - Unless it's out play. - (CHUCKLES) I'm going with in play. (DING!) - In play is correct. - (SIGHS IN RELIEF) OK. - The Interislander ferry runs between Picton and which city? - (GROANS) Um... Um... - An Interislander starting in Picton. Where's it heading to? - I actually have no idea. Um... Wellington? Or something. - Are you locking it in? - I've no idea. Yeah, sure. (DING!) - Wellington is correct. Some good guesses here. - OK, OK. - Finally, for Amygdala. What colour is parsley? - Green. Green. Green, I think. Green. - (LAUGHS) - LAUGHS: I'm locking in green. - Locking in green. Can't be anything else? - I don't like the pause, but it's gree` I think it's green. Yeah. - You think it's green. - It is green. - You just said definitely green, and now you're saying, 'I think it's green.' - It's green! It's green! It is green. - Say green one more time just to be sure. - Green. (DING!) - LAUGHS: Green is correct. - (SIGHS IN RELIEF) Let's go. - Chantelle, congratulations. $315! That is a lot of money. Well done! What are you gonna do with it all? - Uh, save it, go shopping. - Nice choice. Hey, it's been great having you on the show. Thank you so much for competing. Really great job. $315! - Well done, Chantelle. I'm sure your friend is happy that you're listening to her speech. - Yeah. (LAUGHS) - (LAUGHS) - Awesome stuff. If you think you can take on the Brain Buster just like our friend Chantelle, jump online and head to Heihei Games. - Thank you so much for joining us today. Until next time, that's it for Brain Busters. www.able.co.nz Copyright Able 2021
