- We start with four, but in the end, there can be only one. Kia ora. I'm Chris Kirk, and this is Brain Busters. Who has the mind power to make it all the way through the rounds and he ends up at this ` the Brain Buster? - It's the one and only Mikey Falesiu, AKA Mr Brain Buster. Will today's top two players be ready to tackle the ultimate obstacle course? Getting through this webbed tunnel is always tricky, so let's hope they're up for it. I'm sure they are, Mikey. And don't forget ` you can play from home as well. So let's meet today's Brain Busters. (ENERGETIC ELECTRONIC MUSIC) Captions by Cameron Grigg. Captions were made with the support of NZ On Air. www.able.co.nz Copyright Able 2021 Nau mai, haere mai. Welcome to Brain Busters. Today, we have four players hoping they've got what it takes to be called the ultimate Brain Buster. We'll start with Mega Memory before we make our way into our specialist subject rounds, where our players can choose from six of our options. They'll hope to gain enough points to stay in this game and avoid elimination. So, let's meet those players now. Firstly, Cerys, great to have you here on the show. Now, you're right into poetry. Tell us a little bit of how you got into that. - In year 7, I had a few feelings that were a bit much, so I didn't really know what to do about it, so I just decided to write some poetry. - Awesome. And just absolutely love it? - Yeah, it's a great way for me to express my feelings ` not just about my internal feelings, but also how I feel about the world around me. - That's awesome, Cerys! Thank you so much for coming on to the show and sharing that with us. Emily, great to have you here as well. Now, you're right into Highland dancing. How long have you done that for? - Um, about four years, I think. - Done any competitions recently? - Yeah, we went up to Blenheim in the school holidays for dancing. - Yeah. - What was the comp? - Nationals. - Pretty big achievement there. How did we go? - Um, good. Yeah. - Nice. Emily, great to have you here. Fardeen, welcome to the show. Quite sporty. Football's your game. - Yeah. What position are we? - Right wing. - And do we support any Premier League teams? - Liverpool. Do we take our football off the field as well, Fardeen? - Yeah, FIFA. Good man. And we've also got Ash. Also right into your sport. Hockey's your game. How have you been playing for? - I've been playing hockey for over five years. Don't know exactly how long now. - Long time. - Yeah. - Too long to count. And who do we play for, Ash? - I play for Howick Pakuranga Hockey Club. - Oh, big shout-out to them. And a shout-out to all of you for coming on to the show today. It's going to be a great one. So, let's get straight into it now and play Mega Memory. 90 seconds on the clock for our players. Ash, please step forward. (TENSE MUSIC) So, Ash, have you had any crazy hockey injuries before? - Yeah. What's happened? - I was first runner in a PC and the ball hit my knee. - Ouch. - Yeah. - That would hurt a bit. - All right. I can assure you that won't happen today on Brain Busters. Let's get focused on Sequencer for now. 20 points for each sequence you get correct. Here comes your first sequence. (READS ANSWERS) In which order were these films first released? (READS ANSWERS) In what order were these musical instruments invented? Correct. (READS ANSWERS) In which order were these hit songs released? We enjoy a bit of Spice Girls, Ash? - No. Have you heard the Spice Girls? - No. - (EXCLAIMS) Got to get into it. Some absolute tunes ` I'll tell you that much. Do we have the right order, though? Yes, we do. Well done. (READS ANSWERS) Put these video games into order of release. Into our video games, Ash? - Yeah, definitely. - So, reckon you got this one? - Probably. Hope so. - 'Probably hope so.' Well done, Ash. (READS ANSWERS) In what order were these planets discovered? Yeah, on a good roll here, Ash. Well done. (READS ANSWERS) Put these countries in order of population from highest to lowest. Final one. And you've got it right. Well played, Ash. Big smile on your face, as you should. Happy with your performance there? - Yeah, definitely. - Yeah. Nice, Ash. Great stuff. Thank you very much for taking on Sequencer. Ash now has 130 points, Fardeen has 100 points, Cerys has 40 points and Emily has 30 points. So, a great start for two of our players in their specialist subject rounds, but all four are wondering if they've got what it takes to head to that Brain Buster. - Hopefully today's final two players are 100% ready for action, because only one will be going home as the champ. Can't wait to find out who! - You and me both, Mikey. Thanks for that. And don't forget, you can play from home also. Just hop online to Heihei Games. Don't go anywhere. We'll be right back i muri e te whakata. * Hoki mai ano. Welcome back to Brain Busters. (READS QUESTION) Read the question a couple of times there? (CHUCKLES) - Yes. Not making that same mistake again. (LAUGHS) - There you go. You got it right. (READS QUESTION) Awesome job. (READS ANSWERS) (READS QUESTIONS) A final one, Cerys. Thoughts here? - Um, I'm pretty sure I'm right. - I'm pretty sure you're right as well, Cerys. Well played there. A little bit of a mistake, but totally all good. I think we've got plenty of points there. Thank you very much for taking on Identifier. That is our specialist subject rounds complete, so let's take a look at the leaderboard. Cerys has 140 points. Ash has 130 points. Fardeen has 100 points, and Emily has 70 points. So, unfortunately, we need to eliminate our first player today on the show, and Emily, I'm sorry to say it will be you. Thank you very much for playing. The good thing is, Emily, you've got yourself a $100 bank account. So, what will you be doing with the money? - Probably saving it up. - Any ideas what we're saving it for? - Maybe a new phone. - Very nice, Emily. Thanks for coming. And congratulations to our three remaining players. For them, it's one step closer to the Brain Buster. - Our three remaining players got to keep it together if they want to go to Amygdala. It won't be easy, but I'm sure they're ready for this. Thanks, Mikey. They're also ready for the next challenge on the show, and that is, of course, our Brain Teaser. All of our players today have gone through their specialist subject rounds, and we are left with two options for our players to choose from. Today, those options are Blueprinter and Reo Rangatira. So, Cerys, Fardeen, and Ash, please select which one you would like to play now. Thank you, everyone, for voting. We'll start with Cerys, who has decided to play... Reo Rangatira. Ash would like to play... Blueprinter. And Fardeen would like to play... Reo Rangatira. Thank you all for your votes. Let's play Reo Rangatira. 30 points if our players buzz in and get the correct answer. However, if they buzz in and fail to do so, they will lose 30 points. A lot at stake here as we move into our Brain Teaser now. Good luck. Here comes your first Te Reo-focused question. Spell 'mihi.' Cerys. Correct! What is a Maori word for tribe? Cerys. - Iwi? Kia ora. That is correct. If I am eating parakuihi, what time of day is it likely to be? Fardeen. - Night. - It is morning. And that is our Brain Teaser complete. Thank you, everyone, for playing. Let's take a look at our final leaderboard. Cerys has 200 points, Ash is on 130 points, and Fardeen has 70 points. So, Fardeen, I'm sorry to say you have been eliminated from Brain Busters. Unlucky today. The good news is you've got yourself a $100 bank account. What would you like to do with that money? - Uh, probably save it up for the PS5. - Oh, nice choice indeed. Get those sweet FIFA plays going. Awesome, Fardeen. And congratulations to Cerys and Ash. For them, it's now on to the Brain Buster. - Our final two are about to take on the Brain Buster. Who will be our winner? Let's find out soon. Who will be our winner? Let's find out soon. * - Nau mai hoki mai. It's all come down to this, as two players take on the Brain Buster! - It's crunch time for Cerys and Ash ` our final two players here on the Brain Buster. Well done to you both for making it this far. Now, I know, Cerys, you like to draw in your spare time. Tell us about that. - Yeah, it's just a really good` It's kind of a technical thing to me to just copy from a photo or from something I've seen in real life and play some music and take out a ballpoint pen. - Nice. Are you ready to take on the Brain Buster? - Yeah. - Awesome. Best of luck. Ash, I know you like to paint in your spare time. Why do you love painting, man? - I like to paint little models which have lots of little fine details, and you need lots of little paints and lots of little brushes, and it just takes ages, even though it's such a small figure. - Nice, bro. How about you? You ready for the Brain Buster? - Totally. Yeah. - Best of luck to you both. It's now time to jump on to our zip lines, and let's get ready to fly. Here we go! Three, two, one, fly! Here comes Ash, along with Cerys, into the Brain Buster via the brain stem zipline. These two have done incredibly well to make it this far. Let's see who will make it all the way through, as there can only be one. Ash taking the early lead, and looking a little too casual as he entered the Corpus Callosum there. Cerys is on her way now, across the molecule steps. Ash already punching this code into the hippocampus, and he nails it! Cerys only just getting a look at her code now. There's plenty of space between these two competitors as Ash climbs the parietal lobe. Has Cerys memorised the code, or has the pressure gotten into her? She's got it. Nice one, Cerys! Ash crawling through the tunnel web. Will Cerys be able to close the gap? It's not looking likely right now, but you never know. DNA molecule switches could be the difference-maker here. How difficult will they be to activate today? Pretty speedy stuff there, Ash! Cerys is doing great as she makes her way along the frontal lobe, but Ash was able to hold on to the lead for the whole race, and is your Brain Buster champion today. Cerys gets the activation, and one final obstacle to go through ` the basal ganglia. Great effort, Cerys. You never gave up, and you should be super proud of that. - Gotta hit the buzzer! There we go! That is our race finished. Cerys, I'll get you to hop across this way. Cerys, congratulations. You have completed the Brain Buster. Tell us, how has it been here on Brain Busters today for you? - It's been pretty good. - Really enjoyed it? - Yeah. - Glad to hear, and Cerys, you've got second place today, which means you've got yourself a $100 bank account. What will you be doing with that money? - I'll probably buy some Iron Maiden vinyl records. - Oh, very cool indeed. I like it, Cerys! It's been great having you here on the show. Ash, congratulations. You've taken out the Brain Buster. How does that feel? - Feels amazing, thank you. - One thing left to do. You know what's coming. It's time for Ash to take on Amygdala. Ash, congratulations, and welcome to Amygdala ` the final round here for Brain Busters today, and I've got to ask ` what's the pressure like here on Brain Busters compared to being out on the hockey field? - It's way more pressure than on the hockey field. - Really? - Yeah, way more. That's good to hear. I like that, uh, you got a bit of pressure. But the good news is you've lived up to the pressure today really, really well. In fact, you scored 130 points, which is a great effort. Cerys scored 200 points. - Yep. - More points than you. - Yeah. - And you get to take those from her. Anything to say to her right now? (CHUCKLES) - Sorry. - (LAUGHS) Right. Well, maybe you might be able to buy something at school, right? Because you actually go to the same school. - Yeah, we do. - Which is quite cool. So, maybe at the canteen or something. - Yeah, maybe. - Awesome. So, you are playing for $330. Let's get into it now. How many hands do you usually use to swing a baseball bat? - Two. - Correct. What animated movie tells the story of how Mike Wazowski first meet Sully Sullivan? - Monsters Inc? - Final answer there? - Yeah, I think so. Maybe Monsters University, but I think that's the second one. - It's a toss-up between those two? - Yeah, a toss up between those two, but I'm going to lock in Monsters Inc. - Should have swapped. Monsters University is the answer we were after. Is pad thai made with noodles or couscous? - Couscous. Definitely think it's couscous. I've had it before. Or maybe it's noodles. No, I'm going to go with couscous. - (CHUCKLES) - Oh. - Should have gone with noodles. Again, should have swapped! - Yeah, should have swapped. All right. Moving on. For which season do animals hibernate? - Um, they hibernate in winter. - Winter is correct. There we go. In which city was New Zealand's first television studio? - Oh, this is a tough one. I, again, have no idea. I'm going to say... Auckland. It's where I come from, so I guess it's in Auckland. - Represent your hometown. - Yeah. Represent my hometown. - Auckland is correct. Name two colours in the rainbow. - Red and orange. - Definitely those ones? - Definitely. - Red and orange. It's correct. Which slithery creatures are St Patrick said to have driven out of Ireland? - Since it's slithery, I'll probably say snakes. - Correct. Well done. In geometry, how many sides does a triangle have? - A triangle has three sides. - Three sides? - Yep. Confidently going to say a triangle has three sides. - Three is correct. Finally, for Amygdala. This to push us well over $200 as well. Ready for your final question? Is pepperoni a sausage or a salad? - I'm going to 100% confidently say that pepperoni is a sausage. - 100%? - Yeah. - Confidently say? - Yeah, 100% in. It's a sausage. (DING!) - Sausage is 100% correct. Well done. Congratulations. Let's take a look. $231! Nicely played! What are we doing with the money? - I'm probably going to buy a new hockey stick. Mine's getting too short for me at the moment. - Sounds good, Ash. Best of luck with the season coming up. Congratulations. $231! - Well done, Ash. You happy with that performance? - Yeah, definitely. You're going to have some pad thai for dinner tonight maybe? - (LAUGHS) - Probably. - (CHUCKLES) All good. Well done, man. If you think you can take on the Brain Buster, just like our man, Ash, jump online and head to Heihei Games. - Thank you so much for joining us today. Until next time, that's it for Brain Busters. www.able.co.nz Copyright Able 2021 Thank you, New Zealand on Air!
