Hip-hop to history, maths to memory ` we start with four, but in the end, there can be only one. - Keeping it cool with Mr Brain Buster, AKA Mikey Falesiu. I don't know about you at home, but the best two players that make it through to the Brain Buster have their hands full. Will they be up for the challenge, Chris? - We're about to find out, Mikey. And don't forget, you can play from home as well. So let's meet today's Brain Busters. Captions by Michaela Cornelius Captions were made with the support of NZ On Air. www.able.co.nz Copyright Able 2021 (ELECTRONIC THEME MUSIC) Nau mai, haere mai. Welcome to Brain Busters. Today, we have four players hoping they've got what it takes to be called the ultimate Brain Buster. Now, as always, we'll start with Mega Memory before we move into our specialist subject rounds, where our players can choose from six of our options. They'll hope to gain enough points to stay in this game and avoid elimination. So let's meet our players now. Firstly, Lachie. Right into your sport. We've got rugby, mountain biking, touch, running, water polo, skiing. Is there anything we don't play, Lachie? - Not many sports that aren't out there. - Anything? - Maybe soccer. - (LAUGHS) Maybe soccer. Not a huge fan? - Not a huge fan. - Just prefer rugby, I suppose, with it being a winter sport. Favourite player? - Ardie Savea. - Yeah, absolute beast, isn't he? Moving on. Neave, great to have you here on the show. Right into your productions. What productions have you done recently? - I did one last year for my school. It was the 150th anniversary, so we did some time travelling. - Oh, that would have been very cool. Loved it? - Yeah, we met some hippies. - Oh, cool! (LAUGHS) Good to hear it, Neave. We've also got Teuila. Great to have you here on the show. Now, poetry is your thing. What kind of poetry do we love to do? - I really love to make haikus and free word poetry. Awesome. And I'm reading here, you'd love to be a part for some children's books. Awesome. What makes you want to do that? - I'd like to inspire, like, younger people to be poets, because, yeah, I don't know if poetry is really looked at as, like, a 'real job' by a lot of people. And I think, yeah, you really can be a poet and do what you love and make money. - Awesome. Go you. And we also have Toby. Now, if you can't tell, Toby, right into your league. - Yeah. - Clearly. What position are we? - Prop. - If you couldn't guess that already with the size. Man, you're so tall! How long have we been playing league for? - Three years. - Absolutely love it? - Yeah. - Favourite NRL team? - Eels. - Eels. And who do we play for? - I play for Hornby Panthers and recently played for Canterbury for the last couple of years. - Nice, congratulations. Shout-out to the Panthers as well. And shout-out to all of you for being here today on Brain Busters. Let's get straight into our first round of the day. It's Mega Memory. Our players will have 90 seconds to answer as many questions as they can. So let's get straight into it now. Your time starts now. What is larger ` a boulder or a pebble? Toby. - Bob the Builder. - What colour are Mario's overalls that he wears over his red top? (TIMER BLARES) Teuila. - Um, blue. - They definitely are blue. Wow, what a speedy round of mega memory. Thank you all for playing. Let's take a look at those scores. Answering a whole bunch of questions, it's Lachie at the top with 60 points. Neave his 20 points. Toby also has 20 points. Then we have Teuila on 10 points. So now we move into our specialist subject rounds, and starting us off today is Teuila. So what would you like to play? - The Spellbinder, please. - You sure can. Let's play Spellbinder. Teuila, please step forward. (GENTLE ELECTRONIC MUSIC) Bit of a nervous smile as we're walking forward here. - (CHUCKLES) - How are we feeling? - I just hope I get some points. I'm sure you can, Teuila. Let's get into it now. Best of luck. Here comes your first word. Spinster. Correct. Aquaculture. - Can I have, like, it used in a sentence, please? - I studied aquaculture to learn how to farm salmon. Well done. Circular. - No! Why did I say it? I didn't even mean to say that! I'm so` Oh, sorry my brain. - It's all right. - I promise I'm smarter than that. - (LAUGHS) - I don't know why... OK. Sorry. You're totally fine. You, of course, meant to say C, I'm sure, U-L-A-R to finish it off. Good thing is we've still got plenty more words to go. All right, next word ` antique. There we go, back on track. Please spell 'epiphany'. - Can I have it used in a sentence, please? - You sure can. An epiphany is an enlightening experience. I-P-H-A-N-Y. Please spell 'warning'. That is correct. More than a couple of points, if you ask me. Teuila, really well done. Thank you so much for taking on Spellbinder. - Thank you. - Teuila has... Now, because we currently have a tie between Neave and Toby, we'll simply go from left to right, which means it is Neave's turn. What would you like to play? - Equaliser. - Thank you very much. Let's play Equaliser. Neave, please step forward. (GENTLE ELECTRONIC MUSIC) All right, ready to take on Equaliser? 20 points for each equation you get correct. Here is your first ` Correct. Well done. Awesome stuff. Impressive work. 5 was the answer. Finally for Equaliser, Neave ` Is the correct answer. Well played, Neave. Some great answers in there. Thank you so much for taking on Equaliser. Neave now has the lead with... So two of our players have already completed their specialist subject round, but all four of our players have their fingers crossed, hoping they can get to the Brain Buster. - It's about to go down for our final two players. Will they be able to transform their mental skills into physical skills? Can't wait to find out. - You and me both, Mikey. Thanks for that. And don't forget, you can play from home as well. Simply hop online to Heihei Games. Don't go anywhere. We'll see you a muri e te whakata. * Nau mai, hoki mai. Welcome back to Brain Busters. Just before the break, we had Teuila and Neave take on their specialist subject round. And coming forward now. it is Toby's turn. What would you like to play, Toby? - Blueprinter. - Thank you very much. Let's play Blueprinter. Toby, please step forward. (GENTLE ELECTRONIC MUSIC) So, Toby, when playing league, do we have a whole lot of different, like, set moves we've got to memorise, make sure we have them all locked down? - Yeah. - So hopefully that memory is going to help here today. - Hopefully. - Let's find out. We'll get straight into Blueprinter. 30 seconds to have a look at what it is, 30 seconds to put in your answers. Here comes your Blueprinter. It's the Chatham Islands. Good luck. Your time starts now. 862km east of Christchurch and 45 minutes ahead of the rest of New Zealand, you'll find the Chatham Islands. People have lived on the two major islands, Rekohu and Rangihaute, for hundreds of years, and it is the ancestral homeland of the Moriori people. 10 seconds left. That's 30 seconds. You'll now have a further 30 seconds to put in your answers, which time starts now. (TENSE MUSIC) Halfway, Toby. Five seconds left. Just in time, there, for our final one. How are we feeling, Toby? - Oh, not bad. - (LAUGHS) All right, let's have a look. First one, please,... is correct. Cape Young is also correct. Te Ono is correct as well. You've got four there. But missed out with Lake Rangitai. Cattle Point also not correct, sorry, Toby. And again, Lake Huro, unfortunately, not correct. Started off fantastic, though, Toby, so let's not forget about that. Still a great job. Thank you for taking on Blueprinter. - Thank you. - Neave is still out in front with... So we have just one player remaining to take on their specialist subject round, and that player is Lachie. What would you like to play? - Sequencer. - Thank you, Lachie. Let's play Sequencer. Lachie, please step forward. (GENTLE ELECTRONIC MUSIC) So do we have a sore hand or anything after hitting that buzzer, Lachie? - Not quite, but we'll see here. It's all good? Answered a lot of questions in Mega Memory. Can we back it up here with Sequencer? - Let's hope so. Good luck. In what order were these New Zealand actors born, from earliest to latest? That's the way to do it. Well played. In what order did these events happen in New Zealand? Close, but not quite close enough there, Lachie. Carless days were introduced first and then the spring-free trampoline invented. In which order were these films first released? Seen all the movies, Lachie? - Part of Robots, and I know that Mary Poppins is old, so I'm hoping that that's going to be the sequel. - Good logic. Is it the right way to think about it, though? Yeah, good thinking there, Lachie. Arrange these items in the order they were invented from earliest to most recent. It's actually trampoline first, back in 1936, then the plastic hula hoop in 1958, and then jet ski most recently in 1973. And that is Sequencer done and dusted. Tricky stuff there, but you've done well, Lachie. Thank you very much for taking it on. - Thank you. - And that now completes our specialist subject rounds. So let's take a look at the leader board. Neave manages to hold on to first place with... ...and Teuila very close behind on and 90 points. But, unfortunately, we do need to eliminate our first player today on Brain Busters. I'm sorry to say it is you, Teuila. Very, very close today. A $100 bank account, though, is all yours now. So what will you be doing with that money? - Probably get some food at Burger Fuel. - (LAUGHS) - Can I shout-out Burger Fuel? - Yeah, you` (LAUGHS) - Shout-out to Burger Fuel ` please sponsor me and give me free food. That'll be great. I love your food. - (LAUGHS) Fair enough, Teuila. Hey, it's been great to have you on the show. Best of luck with the poetry as well. And congratulations to our three remaining players. For them, it's one step closer to that Brain Buster. - With only three players left, go time is just around the corner. Can't wait to see who our final two will be. Hope they're ready for this. - Me too, Mikey. So before we get to the Brain Buster, of course, we have our brain-teaser. All of our players today have gone through their specialist subject round, and we are left with two options for our players to choose from. Today, those options are... So, Lachie, Neave and Toby, please select which one you would like to play now. Thank you, everyone, for voting. We will start with Lachie, who has decided to play Identifier. We'll jump across to Toby now, who would like to play Reo Rangatira. So it comes down to Neave, who has voted for Identifier. There we go. Thank you, everyone, for voting. Let's play Identifier. A very close game on our hands here at the moment. Just 20 points separating all of our players. So let's get straight into our brain-teaser. Good luck, everyone. Here comes your first Identifier. Identify three items` Lachie. - Newspaper, cardboard box,... and ash. No, glass jar, glass jar. - Quickly changing that at the last moment. And very relieved he was able to do so. Well done, Lachie. Neave. - Dolphin, scorpion and seahorse. - So close, there, Neave. Just needed to replace dolphin with owl. Toby. Needed to swap it round. Neave. - Fox, small bird, butterfly. No, it's` (SIGHS) It's the other way around. - Yeah, sorry, it already locked it in there, Neave. I'm sorry to say, did get round the wrong way, of course. Last one. Lachie. The last points for our brain-teaser. Lachie is correct. Well done. Thank you, everyone, for playing the brain-teaser. That is done and dusted. So let's take a look now at our final leader board. So, Neave, I'm really sorry to say, but you have been eliminated from Brain Busters. Really unlucky as well, but that is part of the game. Also a part of the game is you scoring yourself a $100 bank account. So what will you do with that money, Neave? - I'll probably end up buying some books. - Nice choice, Neave. Thank you so much for coming on to the show. Good luck with the next production as well. - Thank you. - And congratulations to Lachie and to Toby. For them, it's now on to the Brain Buster. - This is where legends are made. Who will be today's Brain Buster? Don't go anywhere. We'll be back. Don't go anywhere. We'll be back. * - Nau mai, hoki mai, and welcome back to Brain Busters. Now, we're just about to get underway with the Brain Buster. Unfortunately, Toby here, unable to compete on the Brain Buster today. But you have nominated someone. Who will that be? - Teuila. - Thank you very much for doing that, Toby. So, with that in mind, let's head up to Mikey for the Brain Buster. - Thanks for that, Chris. Teuila, give 100% and have fun. You ready for this? - Yo, you're welcome, Toby. - (CHUCKLES) All the best. And, Lachie, shotgun shooting is your thing? - Yeah. - Tell us about that, man. What got you into it? - Picked it up over the holidays. We went down to a range and, yeah, just pumped some clay birds, and it was sick, so. - Nice, bro. You ready to get that bullseye today? - Let's hope so. - Best of luck to you both. It's now time to jump up on to our zip lines. Let's get ready to fly. Here we go. Three, two, one, fly! Teuila and Lachie, welcome to the Brain Buster. Lachie's off and down the Neurotransmitter. As he crosses the molecule steps, Teuila's still stuck in her harness. Not a good start. There she goes. Teuila was the first eliminated today, but Toby has brought her back to the game. She's representing Toby here, So will she be able to get him through to Amygdala? It looks like it'll be a tall order to get past the super sporty Lachie who is already miles ahead. Teuila gets her code right, and this is a fast-moving race. Lachie on to the Frontal Lobe and showing no signs of slowing down. Up to the DNA molecule switches already. Oh, wow! Switch activated in no time. Teuila is a bit caught up in the tunnel. Lachie with a bit of a trip there, but it doesn't matter. He shoots, he scores. Lachie through to Amygdala. Teuila's giving it her all, though. And another quick activation of the DNA molecule switch. Toby's got to be happy with that performance, Teuila. You showed a lot of guts and a lot of heart. Chris, over to you. - Buzzer to finish. That is our race done. I'll get you to come across this way, Lachie. Teuila, we'll start with you. Firstly, thank you so much for competing on behalf of Toby. Did we enjoy the obstacle course? - Yo, yeah. (CHUCKLES) - Great to hear it, Teuila. Toby, congratulations. Second place today for Brain Busters. A $100 bank account is all yours. What will you be doing with the money? - Buying shoes. - LAUGHS: Buying shoes. Fair enough, Toby. Great having you here on the show. Lachie, congratulations. You've taken out the Brain Buster. How does it feel? - I'm pretty stoked, yeah. - You've done an amazing job. One thing left to do, Lachie, and that is of course, taking on Amygdala. Lachie, well done and congratulations on making it to Amygdala. - Thank you. - I'm sorry, though. I don't have a buzzer for you to push. I know you really enjoyed doing that. (LAUGHS) Well done, man, seriously. Great effort today. 160 points leading up to this. Toby, who you went up against, got 70 points. We combine those together, and you're playing for $230. - Sounds good. - Good luck. Let's see how much we can win. - All right. - Here comes question number one. Which TV show includes the characters, Dipsy and Laa-laa? Got some options floating around in your head? - Probably just going to guess some random kids TV show, but... Go Sesame Street. Probably not right, but we'll go for it. - Hey, always worth taking the guess, right? - Yeah. Unfortunately not Sesame Street. The correct answer was... Teletubbies. - Oh, right. In what year did Jacinda Ardern become Prime Minister of New Zealand? - 2017. - Not wasting time with that one. Correct. What is the blue part of blue cheese made of? - Mould. - Correct. Is the Waikato River in the North or the South Island? - North Island. - Answering that straight away. - (SIGHS) - Sigh of relief. Well done. What does the V in UV radiation stand for? - Violet. - Violet. You've done well. The Sheriff of Nottingham is the villain to which hero? - Just gonna guess with Superman. - Superman. Much of a hero fan? - Marvel, yes, but outside of that, no. (BUZZER BLARES) - Not Superman. Needed to go a wee way back, actually. Robin Hood was the answer. - Oh. - A tabby is a type of which animal? - A cat. Yeah, cat, definitely sure on that one. - I love that you keep reassuring yourself of the answer. - CHUCKLES: Yeah. Yeah. - So are we reassuring ourselves because we have a little bit of doubt, then? - Just got to go with the winning mindset. - Good way to think of it. - Yeah. - Is it the winning answer, though? Of course, it is cat. What colour is the Hogwarts Express steam engine? - Black with a red badge on the front. - A lot of Harry Potter fans out there. - Yeah, I mean, let's hope I don't annoy them too much with this one. - (LAUGHS) Actually had around the wrong way. Red is the main colour there. All right. Finally, let's get back on track. Last one. Which ball sport has lay-ups and slam dunks? - Basketball. Definitely sure on that one. - Learnt earlier that you're quite the sporty guy. - Yeah. - Fan of basketball as well, Lachie? - Avid fan, I guess, yeah. - But does basketball have lay-ups and slam dunks? (DING!) Yes, it sure does. Well done, Lachie. $138. It's all yours. What are you gonna do with the money? - I would say that I'm probably going to put it towards the new Xbox, but the boys are probably going to make me shout them back in school. - (LAUGHS) I'm sure they will. Hey, shout-out to your boys. Congratulations, man. $138. - Thank you. - Oh, Lachie, big Marvel fan, eh? - Yeah. - Favourite Marvel character? - Probably... Iron Man. - Nice. - And not Robin Hood. (LAUGHS) - Not Robin Hood. - Not Robin Hood. - If you think you can take out the Brain Buster, just like our man, Lachie, jump online and head to Heihei Games. - Thank you so much for joining us today. Until next time, that's it for Brain Busters. Captions were made with the support of NZ On Air. www.able.co.nz Copyright Able 2021
