- Hip-hop to history, maths to memory. We start with four, but in the end, there can be only one. - Chilling out with your boy, Mikey Falesiu. Our top two players will race to the top of Mount Brain Buster to see who will be the champion. Let's hope they're ready, Chris. - Thank you very much, Mikey. And don't forget, you can play from home as well. So let's meet today's Brain Busters. Captions by Stephanie Phan. Captions were made with the support of NZ On Air. www.able.co.nz Copyright Able 2021 (ELECTRONIC THEME MUSIC) - Nau mai, haere mai, and welcome to Brain Busters. Today, we have four players hoping they've got what it takes to be called the ultimate Brain Buster. We'll start with Mega Memory before we move into our specialist subject rounds, where our players can choose from six of our options. They'll hope to gain enough points to stay in this game and avoid elimination. So let's make today's players. Firstly, Jess. Welcome to the show. - Thank you for having me. - It's a pleasure to have you. Quite the dancer, I hear. What kind of dancing do we do? - I do all the styles except hip-hop, which I'd like to try. But it's very different from all the classic styles, so yeah. - Yeah, that old ballet first position; a bit different to the poppin' and lockin', of course. - Yes, very. - I'll stop doing that though. Moving on to Solomon. Great to have you here. You've started your own business. - Yes, I have. - Can you tell us a little bit about that? - So, my business is called Jolly Weaponry. I run it with my friend, and me and him hand-make really good quality, if I say so myself,... - (CHRIS LAUGHS) ...wooden shields and swords, and we're doing quite well. Yeah. - Great to hear, Solomon. - If you want to buy one, head online to the Gmail account, jollycorp1@gmail.com. - (CHRIS LAUGHS) - And if you really want one, send us an order. - You know, this is Brain Busters, not like Dragons' Den, right, Solomon? - Yeah. - OK. Just checking. Let's move on to Jordan now. Great to have you here also, Jordan. - Yep. - What do you like doing in your spare time? - Well, I want to athletics because I really enjoy doing athletics. - So, what's stopping you from doing it at the moment? - Well, my mum ` she's thinking about me doing athletics. - OK. Jordan's mum ` time to start getting that thinking moving on, yeah? OK. Athletics time. But for the time being, Brain Busters time here for Jordan. Moving on to Flo. Welcome to the show, Flo. Do you think you can take out Brain Busters? - I'm hoping so. - Excellent. And what do we like to do in your spare time? - I like playing guitar. I picked it up at the start of last term, and my family's then coached me, and now I love it. - Great to hear. Well, hopefully you love Brain Buster's just as much. Great to have you all here today. Let's get straight into our first round of the day. It's Mega Memory. As always, we'll put 90 seconds on the clock for our players to answer as many Mega Memory questions as they can. Good luck. Your time starts now. Edam and cheddar are both types of what? Flo. - Cheese. - (DING!) - Canberra is which country's capital? Solomon. - It is Australia's. - (DING!) - In a rugby forward pack, what position rhymes with banker? Jess. - Flanker? - (DING!) -Author A. A. Milne wrote Winnie the who? Jess. - Winnie the Pooh. - (DING!) - Which is heavier ` a tennis ball or a softball? Jordan. - Softball. - (DING!) - Which type of transport equipment includes an anchor? Solomon. - Ship. - (DING!) - When did women in New Zealand win the right to vote? Flo. - 1872. - (BUZZ!) - 1893. - Is Aoraki Mount Cook in the north or south island? Jess. - South. - (DING!) - Who did not write part of the Bible ` Matthew, Mark, Brian? Jordan. - Brian. - (DING!) - Willow, redwood, pine and palm are all types` Jess. - Trees. - (DING!) - Which is bigger ` a comet or a galaxy? Solomon. - It is a galaxy. - (DING!) - Beginning with O, what is the Maori name for Christchurch? Solomon. - Oh no, nevermind. Sorry, um` - (BUZZ!) - Otautahi. Is Johnny English a celebrity chef or a spy? Jess. - Spy. - (DING!) - ...is the answer to our final Mega Memory question. Great job, everyone. Let's take a look at our scores. Jess has the early lead with 50 points. Solomon has 20 points. Jordan also has 20 points. And Flo is on zero points. So now we move into our specialist subject rounds and playing first is Flo. What would you like to play, Flo? - Identifier. - Thank you very much. Let's play Identifier. Flo. Please step forward. So, Flo, the question is can we find the 'flow' to get through Identifier? - Hopefully. - Hopefully. Heard that one before. - Yeah. - (LAUGHS) All right, let's move on and get straight into it then. Best of luck. Here comes your first Identifier question. Great start, Flo. Flo is correct again. A last minute change there for Flo. Was it the correct thing to do? Well done. Hoping to get back on track with this one. Needed to add Kevlar and carbon fibre to the list. Finally for Identifier ` Back and forth between Joule and Horsepower. Stuck with Joule first. Is it right? Well done, Flo. Really great start for you here. Thank you for taking on Identifier. Flo as jumped to the lead with 80 points. Jess has 50 points. Solomon is on 20. And Jordan also has 20 points. Time for our second player now to come forward, and that player is Solomon. So, Solomon, what will you be playing? - Sequencer. - Thank you very much. Let's play Sequencer. Solomon, please step forward. So, how long have you been running the business for, Solomon? - Since the first lockdown. Yeah. - Oh, great idea. Make the most of it then. - Yeah. - Well done. Really cool that you're doing it as well. - Thanks. - All right. Let's get into Sequencer now. Best of luck. Here comes your first sequence. In what order did these ways of cooking evolve from earliest to most recent? Nice start, Solomon. In what chronological order did these events occur? Reckon you got this one? - Yep. Hope so. - Correct. Arrange these New Zealand movies in order from earliest to most recent. Hovering on that World's Fastest Indian for a wee while there, Solomon. But you've put it in the right position. Well played. Finally ` In which order were these children's books first published? Final one, Solomon. Would love this one to be correct. - Yep. Definitely. - Get that 20-point boost. - (GROANS) - Just need to swap around the top two ` Where's Spot?, then the Gruffalo, and finally, Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Still, Solomon, really impressive stuff. Thank you so much for taking on Sequencer. Solomon now joins Flo at top of the leaderboard with 80 points. Jess has 50 points. And Jordan has 20 points. So two players have completed their specialist subject rounds. But all of our players are wondering and have their fingers crossed, hoping they can get to the Brain Buster. - It's about to go down for our final two players. Will they be able to handle the heat of the ultimate obstacle course? We'll find out soon. - And you can find out if you can handle Brain Busters as well. Simply hop online to HEIHEI Games. Don't go anywhere. We'll see you a muri i te whakata. * - Nau mai, hoki mai, and welcome back to Brain Busters. Just before the break, we had Flo and Solomon take on their specialist subject rounds and coming out to play next is Jordan. What would you like to play? - Equaliser. - Thank you very much, Jordan. Let's play Equaliser. Jordan, please step forward. Here's the deal, Jordan. I reckon if you get a perfect score, your mum has to let you do athletics. - OK. - Sounds good? - Yes. - Let's get into it. Best of luck, Jordan. - 49. - (DING!) - Correct. - 5.5? - (BUZZ!) - 5.7 ` close on that one. - 10. - (DING!) - Quick. Nicely done. - 341. - (DING!) - Awesome job. Finally for Equaliser ` - Point five. - (DING!) - ...is correct. Well done there. Awesome job. Jordan, thank you so much for taking on Equaliser. - Thank you. Jordan now has the lead with 100 points. Solomon has 80 points. Flo also his 80 points. Then we have Jess on 50 points. So now we just have our final player remaining to take on their specialist subject round, and that player is Jess. What would you like to play, Jess? - Blueprinter. - Thank you very much. Let's play Blueprinter. Jess, please step forward. (INTENSE MUSIC) Well done, Jess. First place after Mega Memory. Do you think you're going to be there? - I hope so. Yeah. - Well, there you go. The only question now is can you reclaim top spot? - (SIGHS) - Let's find out. OK, we're going into Blueprinter now. You have 30 seconds to take a look at what your Blueprinter is, and then you have 30 seconds to put in your answers. Good luck. Here comes your Blueprinter. - Good luck. Your time starts now. The Maniototo District is a great place to spend some downtime over the holidays as it's filled with fun activities for the whole family, like curling or mountain biking. In Oturehua, you'll even find New Zealand's oldest running general store, Gilchrist's, which has been open since 1902. 10 seconds left. (SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC) Time's up. You now have 30 seconds to put in your answers. That time starts now. (SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC) Five seconds left. Just missing out on putting that last one in. Will it cost you? We will find out later on. But in the meantime, let's have our fingers crossed to see if we can see a whole lot of green. First one, please. Correct. Nice work. You have two there. Missed out on Matakanui though, sorry. And that one there. And again... Come on, Naseby! - No... - Nah... Knew that one was wrong as well, so started off great, but just fell off towards the end. Still, thank you so much for taking on Blueprinter. - Thank you. - So, that is our specialist subject rounds complete. Let's take a look now at the final scores. Jordan has 100 points. Jess moves into second place with 90 points, Solomon has 80 points. And Flo also has 80 points. So, we are tied with Solomon and Flo both sitting on 80 points. We now go to our tie-break around. I will ask a question. The first person to give me the correct answer will go through. Fail to give me the correct answer though, and your opponent will go through. Good luck to both of you. Here comes your tie-breaker question. Who wrote the plays Hamlet, Othello`? - It is Shakespeare. - (DING!) - Solomon, that is correct. Congratulations. You are going through, which means, Flo, I'm sorry to say you have been eliminated from Brain Busters. A really close game today on the show as well. You get to take home a $100 bank account. What do you want to do with that money? - I think I'll buy some books and then maybe donate those to the SPCA. - That is really nice of you, Flo, and best of luck with the guitar as well. - Thanks. - And congratulations to our three remaining players. For them, it's one step closer to the Brain Buster. - Ooh, three players left, two will race, but only one will go through to Amygdala to turn their points into dollars. - Thanks, Mikey. And before we can get to the Brain Buster, we have the Brain-Teaser. Now, all of our players today have gone through their specialist subject rounds, and we're left with two options for our players to choose from. Today, those options are Spellbinder or Reo Rangatira. So, Jess, Solomon and Jordan, please select which one you would like to play now. Thank you, everyone, for voting. We'll start with Jess, who has decided to play Spellbinder. Solomon wants to play Spellbinder as well. And Jordan would like to play Spellbinder Three for three. Let's play Spellbinder. Just 10 points in it between these three players. Who will go through? Who will be eliminated? Let's find out now. Your first word is 'slippery'. Solomon. - S-L-I-P-P-E-R-Y. - (DING!) - That is correct. Solomon now has the lead. Detour. Jordan. - D-E-T-O-U-R. - (DING!) - Correct. Jordan takes back the lead. Huntaway. Jess. - H-U-N-T-E-R` - (BUZZ!) - A-W-A-Y. Sorry, Jess. Friction. Jess. - F-R-I-C-T-I-O-N. - (DING!) - Well done, Jess. She gets back those points. Your final word is 'alteration'. Jess. - A-L-T... E-R-A-T-I-O-N. - (DING!) - Correct. Well done, Jess. What a round we've just had. Thank you all very much for playing. Let's take a look at those scores. Jordan has 130 points. Jess has 120 points. And Solomon also has 120 points. So, we have yet another tie. This time it is between Jess and Solomon. So, I will ask a question. Whoever buzzes in and gives me the correct answer will go through to the Brain Buster. But if you give me the incorrect answer, your opponent will go through. Good luck to both of you. Here comes your tie-breaker question. How many stooges are there in the 2012`? - 3. - (DING!) - That is correct, Solomon. Well done. Congratulations, Solomon. You are through to the Brain Buster with Jordan. Jess, sorry to say you have been eliminated from Brain Busters. Like before, it's been such a close game here on the show. You should be very proud of yourself. And of course, walking home with a $100 bank account. So what will you be doing with that money, Jess? - Um, either save it or spend it on something for my new room. - Both excellent options. Jess, great having you here. And once again, congratulations to Solomon and Jordan. For them, it's now onto the Brain Buster. - Who out of our final two contestants will be today's Brain Buster champion? Don't move a muscle. We'll find out who very soon. Don't move a muscle. We'll find out who very soon. * - Hoki mai ano. We've gone through Mega Memory, our specialist subject rounds, the Brain-Teaser, and now it's time for the big one ` the Brain Buster. - It's the moment of truth for our final two players Jordan and Solomon. Well done to you boys on making it this far. You guys ready for the ultimate obstacle course? Awesome. Let's jump off on our zip lines and ready to fly. Here we go. Three, two, one. Flyyy! Jordan is out to prove to his mum that he should be doing athletics. And Solomon, he just wants you to buy some of his jolly weaponry. Some interesting motivations for our two players today. But I'm sure the Brain Buster will be as unforgiving as ever. Both players cross the molecule steps. 260 points will be up for grabs for the winner today, so Jordan and Solomon both want to make it to Amygdala. But of course, only one can. The Corpus Callosum was no problem for these two. But were they able to memorise their codes? Yes, and yes. It's very even so far between Solomon and Jordan. Will the Parietal Lobe make the difference? Whoa! Solomon with some speedy climbing. And he's into the Tunnel Web. Jordan's doing pretty well himself, but Solomon has already shot ahead. Oh, and Jordan's a bit tangled there. That won't help things. Solomon has a decisive lead now. He had to survive two tie-breakers to make it to the Brain Buster. So he's not taking this opportunity for granted. He's up at the DNA molecule switches now, but Jordan is fast approaching. Can Solomon activate his switch in time? Yes! Solomon can now make his way down and head to the Basal Ganglia. Jordan is still struggling with the DNA switches. Solomon enters the Basal Ganglia, and it's too late now for Jordan. A great win by Solomon today. - Nice work, Jordan. Finish strong. - Yeah, Jordan. You got this man! A great race and, as Chris said, a strong finish. - Buzzer to finish. Awesome stuff. Nice work. I'll get you both to come across this way. Jordan, we'll start with you. Well done. Definitely an athletic live performance, if I do say so myself, and second place today as well, so congratulations. A $100 bank account is all yours. What will you be doing with that money? - Um, I'll probably save up for a computer for high school. - Nice! Very smart of you as well, Jordan. Thank you so much for coming on for the show. Solomon, congratulations. - Thank you. - Well, leaping all the way through that course. Did a fantastic job. How does it feel to be Brain Buster champion? - Oh, great. It's awesome. - There is still one thing left to do, Solomon, and that is taking on Amygdala. Solomon. Wow-wee. What a show you have had ` gone through two tie-breaker rounds, even ended up on the same score as Jordan for our Brain Buster. A great close race. It's been very impressive. How have you managed to hold on to your composure through all of it? - Well, at the start, I was actually quite worried that I was going to go out first, and I was like, oh, shoot. But then once I'd done the first tie-breaker, I felt a bit more confident on the second one. - Yeah, definitely gave you a slight advantage,... - Yep. - ...and here we are at Amygdala playing for $260. - Thank you. - No way we can tie that now. - No. - Just you and the questions. Good luck. Here comes your first one. Does a pool table have six or eight pockets? - Six. - (DING!) - It does. Approximately every month, which celestial object orbits the earth? The moon. - (DING!) - Correct. Which Addams Family character is named after a weekday? - Um... Friday... Addams. - (BUZZ!) - Wednesday was the answer. - CHUCKLES: Bit of a guess that one. - Yep. (LAUGHS) I have no idea. Where on your body would you wear Ray-Bans? - On your eyes. They're glasses. - (DING!) - Nicely done. Which TV network has a channel called Duke? - TVNZ. - Definitely? - Yep. - 100%? - Mm-hm. - (DING!) - It sure is. Does Pakistan share a border with Ireland or India? - India. - A hundred percent sure on that one. Ireland is on a completely different continent. - (DING!) - Can't argue with that logic. Well played. Which New Zealander wrote and directed the film Boy? - Taika Waititi. I've seen that film. - Great Kiwi film. - Yeah. - (DING!) - Yep. - Nicely done. What is produced by the company Penguin Random House? - Books. - (DING!) - Correct again. Doing really well. Final Amygdala question, Solomon. Judo experts wear a black what? - Belt. - Our final Amygdala answer. Do Judo experts wear a black... belt? - Yeah. - (DING!) - Solomon, well done. Of course, they do. Really great stuff. Let's take a look at the board. $208. Incredible! What are you going to do with the money? - I'm not sure. I'm going to give some money to my mom cos I'm actually in debt to her. She bought something for me. - Right. - I might save the rest or spend it on a business venture. - Well, all the best with whatever business venture you do take on. You've been amazing here on the show. Great stuff. $208! - Nice stuff, Solomon. I'm sure Taika Waititi's happy that you watch his movies, bro. - (ALL LAUGH) - You happy with your performance? - Yep. - Awesome stuff, man. If you think you can take out the Brain Buster, just like the bro, Solomon, jump online and head to HEIHEI Games. - Thank you so much for joining us today. Until next time. That's it for Brain Busters. Captions were made with the support of NZ On Air. www.able.co.nz Copyright Able 2021
