You asked the train operator to increase the speed. Pick it up K, I got the 278 coming your way. The brakes aren't responding. So what, we're trying to pin this on me now? - (LUCAS) Max gave it to me. We have discovered somebody close to you died in the train crash last night. (COLE) Phillip Hogan. Phillip Hogan was instrumental in the design of the Apollo. Who's running loose in Michigan? A Matelona cartel associate named Max O'Neill. The Mexican cartel? Max O'Neill, he is armed... I turned to my brother-in-law for help. Carlos Ortega. I told Carlos I'd launder money for six months. But there's no leaving the cartel. (GUNSHOT) BP is 148 over 79 and falling. You need to stay here, we gotta get him into surgery right now! (SOUND SLOWLY FADES AND ECHOES) Kendra! Kendra! Oh my God. You're bleeding! What happened? Are you-- Are you hurt? Do you need-- Lucas, uh, Lucas. You need to go back to your room. - Hey, hey, it's OK. - Is he going to die? No! No, no. Lucas, please. Everything will be fine. Go back to your room. Come with me. Come with me. It's OK. What were you thinking? Why would you go meet up with someone who hijacked your car? Why would you-- Why would you do that? That's insane! - My phone-- - I got it. - It's Ellen, I gotta go. - I'm sorry! You're gonna be OK, just slow down. Thanks. - (PHONE RINGS) Ellen. - Kendra. I need you at HQ. Diana Bright's here. The public was in danger. I have an obligation to protect them. And now my witness is fighting for his life. That woman had every right to defend herself. I'm a big supporter of the second amendment. Bollocks! Don't hide behind your constitution. You did this for votes. Don't you preach at me, you're not even American. (LAUGHS) If Max dies, his blood is on your hands. You mess with me, I mess back. Now, that's kind of the Bright family motto. And I'm terrified. Hello Sheriff. She's a tough cookie. Half the state used to work for her family in their autoparts factories, driving their trucks. Basically owned the state. Mm-hmm. She thinks she still does. Yeah. Well, at least we agree on something. - (LAUGHS) - (TELEPHONE RINGS) O'Neill's outta surgery. He's doing well. (SIGH) So was it worth it? Did he at least tell you anything? Yeah. He said that man was murdered right after the train crash. What? And he thinks that that man may have been mistaken for him. Wow! Then if he's right, the cartel crashed the train. Yeah, and then sent someone to make sure that Max didn't survive. At least he's OK. - (CONTINUOUS SOFT BEEPING) - Welcome back! Gave us a bit of a fright. Was not the plan, believe me. Ugh. I'd let the anaesthetic wear out before you try that. You're a lucky man. Pretty sure you're the only one who thinks so. The bullet missed your vital organs. Get some sleep. Uh, what are you doing up? Can I see him? I'm-- I'm pretty sure he's not a mole for the cartel. Get in here, little man. Sorry to hear about your mother. I know it's hard to lose someone who loves you so much. But you're brave, Lucas. I've seen that. Hey. You still have that sweet ride? Can I see? Mmm. Did you tell anyone what we saw? (FIRE CRACKLING) (INAUDIBLE OVER FIRE CRACKLING) No? Now, can you keep another secret? (WHISPERING) (REPORTER) Diana Bright continues to be critical of the Federal Transportation Safety Authority's ongoing investigation. I know high-speed trains are a European thing but you're telling me there wasn't a single American at the FTSA who coulda headed up this investigation? If there existed any competent leadership at that agency, maybe we'd have answers by now. (REPORTER) Breaking news. We are learning that Max O'Neill, the target of the FBI man-hunt, died overnight while undergoing surgery for a gunshot wound. (KNOCKING) What's happened? What's happened is this coffee is crap and I've learned to travel with my own espresso machine. Good morning by the way. Morning. You have got guts, I'll give you that. Guts? You still trust your guts after that whole Howard Lawson thing? How did you know about that? You tell me you put your boss in jail and you think I'm not gonna look into it? Fair enough. Listen, I put out a news report this morning saying that O'Neill died in the OR and I wanted to tell you personally. Didn't want you having a heart attack. Thank you. So, uh, I'm in the loop now, am I? Well, that is better than being a loose cannon. I have something else I wanna share with you. This is a DEA wiretap. It was recorded yesterday, hours before Max and the marshal boarded the train. (RECORDING: MAN 1) How can we be sure he's on the train? (MAN 2) Saint Emilio wouldn't lie. (MAN 1) I want him dead, any means necessary. Carlos Ortega. Yes, to the Matelona member we found dead in the crash. Uh, who's Emilio? Whoever told Carlos Ortega that Max was gonna be on the Apollo. Who else other than the FBI knew, Ellen? Your guess is as good as mine. Whoever it is is probably still out there still telling the cartel whatever they know. Maybe we should just ask Max. He may know who this Emilio is. No. I don't know what he'd do with the information and I don't want Emilio's blood on my hands. I know there's been more than a few distractions but I wanted everyone to remember our sole focus here. Discovering why the Apollo crashed. OK, right, where are we at? We've determined that the brakes were working before the emergency stop but failed shortly after. Right, but the brakes were armed properly and the lines were clear so what went wrong? We've been working on getting the software reports from URSA. They say it's proprietary so-- Yeah, our lawyers are talking to their lawyers. - And three years later... - Let's hope not. What about the emergency brake itself. Do we know who activated it? I went through ALL of the footage and no one pulled an emergency brake handle throughout the whole train. OK, so maybe there was a malfunction? Uh, why don't we get all the schematics for the emergency brake system and I wanna know how it works. Where are we on casualties? Um, two patients in Battle Creek passed away last night, making 62 dead. Is everyone else accounted for? Nearly. Three names still listed as missing. Couple of survivors may have walked away before the FBI put up the perimeter. Let's see if we can track them down. - Parker. - Sorry, excuse me. Yeah? - Kendra, you need to see this. - You found the murder victim? - And then some. - OK. Alright guys, thanks! What have you got? Sorry I missed this the first time around. - That's Phillip Hogan. - Who? One of the original designers of the software on the Apollo. - You sure he was murdered? - No question. This is evidence of twisting. The vertebrae has been torqued. Yeah, but that could've been caused by the crash. True, but the hyoid's been crushed. And look. Thumb prints directly above the bone. This is our murder victim. Could've been mistaken for O'Neill in the dark and all the confusion. There's more. Is that Walt Mack, the tanker truck driver? Mm-hmm. I got his dental records for a positive ID. And? When I took an x-ray for comparison... ELLEN: There's a bullet in his head. (PARKER) 100 per cent. Walt was thorough in his approach to suicide, I'll give him that much. IF it was suicide. Sheriff, can you spare the deputies to search the area around the crossing for Walter Mack's gun? Will do. (PHONE CHIMES) - Thanks Parker. - Thank you. (SIREN) We're really under pressure to release Lucas to social services, but he's not American so that means he'll be going to an immigration detention centre. Yeah, I'm still trying to contact his family. We know the mother was taking him to see his grandfather, we just don't know where. Well, let's hope he gets here in time. If no one turns up, could you release him to my care? It's just that he's gone through so much already. For a day or two, it's better than the alternative. I hope you realise that you've, um, done a great job here. (LAUGHS) Feels like I got ten years experience in a matter of days. Thanks. You look good. You know, I didn't take you for a liar. I see you got the boy's car. Mm-hmm. Yeah. He left it with me for the night. Keep me company. So when do they get me out coz you know, I'm basically a sitting duck here. We're working on it. You're here under a false name. The FBI, they told the press that you didn't make it. I see. And how long do you think that's gonna hold up? Max, do you, um... What? What is it? We found the murder victim. Did you take a good look at the man who killed him? No. Was anybody else there? Do you think anybody could ID him? (ECHOED) Did you tell anyone what we saw? Good. Keep it that way. No one. Hey Kendra. You may wanna get here. Jordan Cole just showed up. KENDRA: Great! Pulling up right now. - Hey. - Hey! Mr Cole. I should've called ahead. - Phil's death has been... - I understand. I'm very sorry to have to tell you this but, uh, we believe Mr Hogan was murdered. You can't be serious? It's possible that he was mistaken for someone else. I need Phil's laptop. I'm sorry but uh, only next of kin can have access-- It contains patented information. I can get a court order. Like the one blocking access to your software? Give me the computer and I'll release the software reports. Wait here. - He's taller than I thought. - Cool too. - Theo. - Yup? I need you to go to the FBI lock-up. Copy everything off Phillip Hogan's laptop and bring it right back here. - Is that legal? - I'll check while you're gone. Uh, I'll come with you. You might need me. - Just-- Just be discreet. - OK. Agent Hunter. Hi, uh... I need your OK on something. Is that Jordan Cole? Yes. And I'm just about to hand him evidence from your lock-up. Oh. This sounds interesting. (WHISPERING) Do you know where the FBI lock-up is? - Yeah. It's up there. - Thanks. (THEO CLEARS THROAT) That it? Yeah! Uh, yeah, that looks like it. - Uh, great! Thank you so much. - No problem. OK. Awesome. Ah, it's dead. - It's dead? - Almost, yeah. Uh, this should work. Uh, thank you. - His phone. - Yeah. - Let's go. - OK. Hey. (TELEPHONE RINGS IN BACKGROUND) (BACKGROUND CHATTER) - OK. - Thanks. (CLEARS THROAT) Thank you! - Everything OK? - Yeah, it's all good. Mr Cole. Have you sent the reports? Right. Then I believe this is yours. You're wasting your time. The software had nothing to do with the crash. Mr Cole, do you know of anyone that might've wanted Hogan dead? Have you ever thought something so crazy, even you didn't believe it? Happens to me all the time. Then I may have something to discuss with you soon. I'll be in touch. Mr Cole! Sure. (CHATTER) OK. (TONE) (TONES AND DINGS) (VIRTUAL ASSISTANT) Calling the office. (MAN) Yes, Mr Cole? Cancel my meetings for the next two days. I'll be in transit. - To where, sir? - Toronto. (GRAVEL CRUNCHES) Wow. Toronado. Great American muscle car. 455 under the hood right? You wanna buy it? Ah! I got bills to pay. Oh I wish, Bill. I wish but uh, I'm not here to buy a car. I'm here because we would like for you to appear in a campaign ad for us. (LAUGHS) What? No, no, no, no. Look, I appreciate what you guys are doing but I'm no actor. Good. I'm not looking for an actor. I'm looking for real people with important stories. Like what happened to you after that awful crash. That lady was brought in to scapegoat me. Let's make sure it doesn't happen to anyone else. Alright, what I have to do in this ad? Uh, how about you just keep working on this beauty? How does that sound? Do you know, I think I could name every single part in here that was manufactured by our company. Right here in Michigan. Don't you dare sell her, Bill. Are you good to go? Nah, it says here three generations. - It's only two. - Three sounds better. Yeah, well I don't do bullshit. OK, we'll take it out. Just say what sounds good. Let's uh, close the hood and then straight into the camera, OK Bill? Yeah, alright. (CAR HOOD CLOSES DOWN) I'm Bill Ratch. I worked 30 years at Union Michigan Rail. My father the same. But I got let go coz of this automated train disaster. Computers. They're never to blame. Just people. Coz people can be fired. That's why I'm voting for Diana Bright. Coz she knows the real America is the one where people can still take pride in their work. Bill, that was uh, that was great! That was amazing. Really moving. - Felt a bit-- - No, Bill. It was perfect. It was perfect. We just need you to sign a waiver and then we're all good. Yeah, alright OK. - Thanks. - No, I guess thank you. (REPORTER) URSA shares continue their slide following reports that software failure may have had a role in the Apollo disaster. Labelled by some as the next Elon Musk, URSA CEO Jordan Cole frequently titled his automation technology as the next step in the global transportation revolution. (FOOTSTEPS GROW LOUDER) KENDRA: Theo. Where are we at with Cole? Uh, the software reports for the Apollo came in. - I'm just about to get to them. - OK, great. Did you find anything of interest on Hogan's laptop? It's heavily encrypted. It could take weeks to get in. - Bollocks. - But Charlotte nabbed his phone. This, I can crack in a couple of hours. You two make quite the team, don't you? - Yeah. - Guys? Guys, I found something. So, I tracked down two of the missing passengers, both safe and sound. So that only leaves one man still unaccounted for. This is him. - What's his name? - I don't know. Yet. This is our mystery man getting on the train in Detroit. He paid with cash so no way to track him. We can't see his face. As if he knows where the security cameras are. Right? And that continues. I only have one more shot of him. Yeah, but he goes into the washroom. You gotta have him coming out. He doesn't. - Not ever? - No. I watched the footage all the way through to the crash. - He never appears again. - Right. Can you uh, fast forward just before the emergency stop? - Sure. - To that same washroom area. Wait. What's that? What's that? Go back a bit and just play it frame by frame, please. The woman who uh, had the baby. She said that she saw someone outside at the emergency stop. But that could be the train operator. He had to go outside to reset the brakes. - No, she didn't think so. - No, no, no. The timecode is 20, 53, 40. Sheffield didn't leave the cockpit for another two minutes. That emergency stop is somehow connected. Theo, have you checked out the trainspotting videos? We've got a couple guys on it, yeah. OK, do me a favour. Will you take a look and see if you can find anything that was shot after the emergency stop? It's a long shot but it's worth a try. Where are you going? Just uh, just gonna head out for some air! (GEESE HONK) (RATCH) Dispatch to Apollo. What the hell's going on there, Keith? (KEITH) Someone must've pulled the emergency brake but computer's not telling me which cabin. (RATCH) A computer malfunction. It can't be. Just ignore the blasted thing. You need to rearm the brakes. (BIRDSONG AND THUNDER) What're you looking for? Hmm? More evidence against me? You'll wanna charge me with manslaughter next. What are you doing out here? You think I don't wanna know what happened? It's all on my head, right? As I explained to you earlier Mr Ratch, getting Keith Sheffield to speed up had nothing to do with the crash. - You sure about that? - Yes. I explained it all to your employer. I'd um, I'd be happy to testify on your behalf. So I didn't get all those people killed. - No. - Or Keith. The brake system, it lost all air pressure after the emergency stop and I'm trying to figure out why. RATCH: What is it? If I had to take a guess I'd say it's window lining. What do you think? It might be. - KENDRA: Theo! - Kendra, check this out. I was searching through the trainspotting videos and I found this. A kid took it just minutes before the crash. - You see what I see? - Yeah. There's no reflections in that window. Yeah. Theo, I found this on marker 79. The emergency stop. Window lining. We should check if it comes from the Apollo. Absolutely. Odds are it does. - I'll check when you're at lunch. - I don't do lunch. - What about a working lunch? - Dom? What are you doing here? Well, a friend gets carjacked by a cartel, I like to drop by. Come on, I'm starving. What's good to eat around here? - You're in for a treat. - I bet. - See you in a bit. - Yep. DOM: So is it chips or French fries? Where are you with the investigation so far? Do you really think the cartel may have crashed that train? Possibly. Well, it's quaint, I'll give it that. - It is indeed. - Have to watch it. I almost got ran over three times in Washington. This is Gale. - Miss Malley! - Ah, give me a second, yeah? Just the lady I was hoping to find. You found the gun? Yup. My deputy scooped it up about a hundred feet from the crossing. It was probably thrown from Walt's truck with the impact. It's twin barrel? Yeah. Snake-killer. Rattlesnakes, stuff like that. I didn't know they had rattlesnakes in Michigan. There's snakes everywhere, ma'am. Can you verify that this is Walt's? I can call the National Gun Tracing Centre but I wouldn't hold your breath. There are 400 million guns in this country. Ah, good thing we were only looking for one, eh? - Thanks! - Yeah. So they really have Sheriffs here. (KENDRA LAUGHS) I am so in the mood for comfort food! - Stop it. Hi Gail. - Dom, this is Gail. She helped find survivors on the night of the crash. Oh, had to do something. Did the mom and baby make it out OK? - They did, they're good. - Good news for a change! So today's special is Dinty Moore. - Sorry, Dinty what now? - We'll take two. You'll love it. Dinty Moore. - Dinty Moore. - Hello. Hi, uh. Ellen Hunter, FBI. Uh, Dom Hayes, I work with Kendra in London. - Nice to meet you. - Formerly Scotland Yard. Oh! Thank you for letting us borrow her. Hey, I'm just on my way to the hospital. - Excuse me, I just got this. - O'Neill is alive. It's a messaging app used by the cartel. Fake news didn't last long. On my way to the hospital now. When are you moving him? I'm trying to get a helicopter, budget's being what they are. Put a rush on that for you Agent Hunter. Here you go. Thank you. No one likes cops around. I know it. - Thanks. - So, um. Howard. Any desperate pleas from house arrest? Actually, he called with an idea about the investigation. I shut him down. Well, good for you. Yeah, turns out it was a good idea. Well, that's Howard being Howard then. And how about otherwise? How are you keeping with the Americans? - I feel a bit untethered here. - In a good way or in a bad way? - Yeah. - Right. I miss AJ you know, being so far away. Oh, he's gonna be what, starting Oxford soon. It's not like he's coming home for the weekend, right? True. I'm working with a new team and the FBI and don't get me wrong, it's a lot of work but I-- I think it's been good for me, Dom. Um, sorry, Gail? Could I get some milk please? - GAIL: Here you go. - Thank you. So um, Howard. He's getting to you, huh? Yeah, he's eating at me. I don't really know how to stop it. Well, I've heard forgiveness is the way to go. It won't work much for me but... Good luck with that. The fork? Cheers. - I'm here. - Yeah. Bring me proof when it's done. I need to know he's gone. (SIREN IN BACKGROUND) - (KNOCKING) - Huh? Oh, sorry to sneak up on you like that. I was just wondering if you want some company. I mean, stake outs are the worst. Sure. - Can I pour you a cup of coffee? - Cup of cold right here. Oh, yeah. - Thanks. - Bring your own water. I have to admit, I was surprised when I first met you. My grandpa was a Sheriff, my dad was a deputy. All my cousins are law enforcement officers but... I mean, how'd someone like you end up with a badge? Someone like me. Um, I-- Hard work. I worked my way through school. Um, actually applied twice before they accepted me. - Seem a bit surprised. - I just didn't, you know... I guess I maybe assumed that they'd fast-tracked you or something. (LAUGHS) No. No. - Well I think you're gonna live. - Gee, thanks doc. (SPEAKER) Doctor Klein to the nurses' station please. - Can I help you? - Uh, looking for the morgue. Oh, I'm so sorry. Down that way through the parking lot. So, now you're taking on the big, bad cartel? - And how does that feel? - Good. You know, some of us go after the big fish, some of us stay home and keep the town safe. Right? We all gotta do our part. Protect and serve. It's got character-- (ALARM RINGS) Take the front, I'll go around the back. - (ALARM BLARES INDOORS) - MAN: Come on, keep moving. (SHERIFF ON RADIO) Everything OK? Looks like someone pulled the fire alarm. Get back, get back! (SHERIFF) STOP! Move outta the way! - Ugh! - SHERIFF: Agent Hunter! This is Sheriff McCullogh. The suspect is down on 50 Main Street. We heard shots. What's going on? A man came for Max. We think he was cartel. Was? I took him out. He's on his way to the morgue. - And what about Max? - He's gone. Don't know where, don't know how. So, you think O'Neill's gonna head to Chicago? If he's still alive. We don't know if the hitman was alone. You OK? Yeah. Charlotte! Have you met Dom? Uh, no but Theo told me all about you. Anything from the software reports? Uh, nothing, no. I did manage to get into Hogan's phone records. Did you find anything? Yeah, these are the last calls Phillip Hogan made. Uh, limousine service on the way there. Jordan Cole's cell. The last call he made was when he was travelling on the train. Private number, no name. He called that number 10 minutes before the train derailed. Yeah and it wasn't the only time. He called multiple times the past two weeks and erased it from his history and we had to dig. Sounds like Phil had something to hide. Let's give this private line a ring. Uh, yeah. - (LINE RINGS) - (TELEPHONE RINGS) Hello? Hi, hello. This is Kendra Malley. I'm calling from the FTSA at the site of the Apollo train derailment. Sorry who am I speaking to, please? Sergeant Boyle of the Hamilton Ontario Police Unit. - In Canada? - That's the one. Uh, Sergeant Boyle, a person of interest dialled this number just before our train derailed. Can I ask why? This isn't my phone and we've just arrived at the scene. Scene? The person you're calling is dead. One man calls the other man and next few hours, they're both dead. Dom, do you um, would you go check out the car crash? What, in Canada? I just got here. I think there could be a connection. - Came here to watch your back. - Kendra. - Any sign of Max? - I put a wide perimeter. Somehow he must've slipped through. - Let's hope he shows up in Chicago. - He promised. Only a couple days left until the grand jury. Jordan Cole's right, there's zero problems with software. I mean, it's possible he altered the reports-- - Are you OK? - Uh, yeah sorry. The morgue. It's hard to just put it out of my mind but-- - Yeah I know, I get it. - (SIGHS) But hey, that's why we're here. We're here to make sure whatever happened to those people never happens again. And you're really helping with that. - You're a rockstar, Charlotte. - (LAUGHS) So, what's the deal? Are you single? - Sorry. - No! No, um. I-- I was seeing someone but she moved on. Um, I like to think it's coz I work so much. - Could be your personality. - Um. - Kidding. - (LAUGHS) Right. Yeah, no. Uh, what about you? Um, I date online for fun but I have like, abandonment issues. Like, how do you mean? Like, I think everyone will abandon me and then they do. Right. Maybe you just jump too quick. Maybe. Back to work. Thanks for coming, Dom. You're worried about that fugitive, aren't you? Max. Well, he's-- He's been through so much. - Lost causes and stray cats. - (LAUGHS) Look, in the morning I'll eh, I'll drive up to Canada and check out that car crash. Thanks, Dom. One more for the road? I'd love to but I need a clear head in the morning. Yeah, you and me both. - Cheers. - Cheers. (BOTH EXHALE) - I needed that. - Anytime. I, um. I should get some sleep. - Yeah, me too. - Yeah, good luck with that. You haven't checked out the mattresses yet. (LAUGHS) Right. - Goodnight then. - Night. (DOOR CLOSES) (DOOR UNLOCKS) - Who's the guy outside? - (EXCLAIMS) Captions were made with the support of NZ On Air.
