Previously on Departure... He is armed, and he is dangerous. (GUNSHOT) O'Neill's out of surgery-- You did this for votes! You mess with me, I mess back. You still have that sweet ride? Bring me proof when it's done. I need to know he's gone. (PEOPLE SHOUTING) - What about Max? - Gone. Dunno how, dunno where. - Regulations state that-- - Regulations?! You trying to pin this on me now? That lady was brought in to scapegoat me. I'm here because we'd like you to appear in our campaign ad. This is our mystery man getting on the train in Detroit. He paid with cash, so no way to track him. I only have one more shot of him. He goes into the washroom so you must see him coming out. He never appears again. A person of interest dialled this number just before our train derailed. The person you're calling is dead. Would you check out the car crash? What, in Canada? I just got here. I think there's a connection. We believe that Mr Hogan was murdered. I need Phil's laptop. - Who's the guy outside? - Agh! - What are you doing here? - I've nowhere else to go. I just need a little rest and... then I'll go. Heading to Chicago on your own? Safer that way. You want a drink? Yeah. - What'ya got? - I have no idea. (CAR HORN AND ALARM) (TENSE MUSIC BUILDS) (MUSIC FADES) So, when's the Grand Jury? Two days. Em, what's the plan after that? Witness protection? I mean (SIGHS), that's the plan. But ah... Pfft! I dunno. - I dunno. - What? What is it? So... My wife... The... the car bomb... It was my fault. How? I told Carlos I wanted out. So... I stopped laundering money. I closed down his accounts. I thought, I'm family. He's not really gonna do anything. Then I found our dog on the front porch. - Dead. - Maria knew it was a warning. She knew there was only one way out of the business. Then Maria got angry, and uh... ..wanted to go for a drive to clear her head. Car bomb was meant for you. I gotta do something. I gotta make some kinda amends. My husband took his own life. He was suffering from depression and it got worse and worse. Turned to psychosis. I tried to do everything I could to help and it... It's not easy to move on. No. It's not. (WATER DRIPPING) (CRYING) I'm so sorry for your trouble. Has he been ID'd yet? Hector Sanchez. Originally from Los Angeles. Known associate of the Matalona cartel. I hope there's not more comin'. NEWSMAN: Still no word on the identity of the gunman shot dead by police yesterday afternoon outside the Rockwater County Health Clinic. When asked if the suspect had ANY connections to alleged cartel associate Max O'Neill, both the FBI and the local sheriff's office declined to comment other than to say that the investigation is ongoing. So you're definitely going? Sure that's the right choice? I can't take any more chances with the FBI. Ortega's got men everywhere and I need to get to that grand jury. I could get a friend to drive you - Dom from last night? Nah, can't risk getting anyone else killed. The FBI will come looking for you. Carlos' men will look for you. A friend of Maria's in Chicago is gonna help me. If it's a friend of Maria's and she knows her brother... He's a priest. He hates the cartel. I'm in safe hands with Emilio. - Emilio? - Yeah, Emilio. I heard Carlos on a Matalona phone tap. Emilio was the one who told the cartel you were on the train. (KNOCK ON DOOR) - Good morning. - Dom! - Hi! - I'm just heading out. I should be in Hamilton in five hours. Great, thanks. Uh... it may be nothing, but eh... it's worth checking. - Are you OK? - Yeah. (MUFFLED) Let me know if you find our fugitive. Dom, stop worrying about me. Let me know what you find, yeah? You sure you're alright? I get the feeling you want to ask me something. No. Eh... it's all good. Alright. Well, I better get going. - Drive safe, yeah? - I will. Bye. Max? Captions were made with the support of NZ On Air. www.able.co.nz Able 2021 - Bad time? - Uh... no, not at all. - Hi, Lucas! - Hey. His mom's boyfriend is arriving in a few hours but in the meantime..? Sure. Lucas... ..you're gonna spend the day with me today, OK? (BIRDS CHIRPING) She's not coming back. I'm sorry. Is Max gone? Yeah. Did something bad happen to him? No! No, he's just gone away for a bit, that's all. What's that? Max told me to give it to you IF he needed to leave. (TENSE, DRAMATIC MUSIC BUILDS) TV: Bill Ratch, a third-generation railway man and another victim of the Apollo train crash. Computers, they're never to blame. Just people. 'Cos people can be fired. REPORTER: And who has Bill Ratch been fired by? Who's the woman Governor Martin put in charge of this state's worst disaster? She's not from Michigan. She's not even an American. That lady was brought in to scapegoat. Sorry, Kendra. It just came on TV. Can't you sue 'em or something? This is um... this is Lucas. Oh! Hey, bud! Yeah, he's gonna be hanging out with us today. - Great. - Cool. Great. Ahh... oh. Here you go. Eh... Lucas, why don't you show me that rad car? Come on! What is on that?! - I need you to find out. - Sure. Eh, just keep it between ourselves, OK? - Yeah, you got it. - Keep your eye on your fave car. Ready? Oh! Where's your car, Lucas? Where? Oh, you're good! (MENACING MUSIC) (NECK CRACKS) (MENACING MUSIC INTENSIFIES) (WHISPERING) Hey, nice work. Oh, my first career was in babysitting. OK... uh, have you been able to ID our ghost? Well that is a good name for him. I've talked to our friends the FBI about facial recognition, and between the sunglasses and the hat-- - They can't identify the face. - No. But I think we know how the ghost activated the emergency brakes. Uh, here we go. This... is the washroom that our ghost went into and never came out of. And... see that right there? That's the pipe that operates the emergency brake system. It runs right through the washroom wall. What's the holdup in there? So, if he could get to the pipe, he could activate the emergency brake without using one of the pulls? Yeah, it's possible. It wouldn't be easy. The pipes are really thick metal. But maybe our ghost came prepared. Where are we with the window lining I found? It's the same make they use on the train. You think he stopped the train, then jumped out the window? Well, let's find out! They're cleaning the cars of biohazards. I'll check it out as soon as they give the all clear. OK. (PHONE RINGS) - Dr. Lopez? - I've got good news. Amy Miller's partner Brad Walker arrived for Lucas. - He's here? - Yeah. He's heading to lockup to collect Amy's things. OK, great. You think I haven't been through enough here, dammit! I mean, I'm her husband. So... I'm not leavin' here without that suitcase. - Mr. Walker? - Yes! Hi, I'm uh... I'm Kendra Malley. Everything OK? Ahh, well he's saying that I'm not next-of-kin because Amy and I were common law. But it... it's right here. I could-- I'm sure it's just a matter of paper work. Hey! Buddy! Hey! How ya doin'? Huh? How ya doin', buddy? You know, I think we're all just still in a bit of shock. And um... we'd just love to get her things, you know? Sentimental value. I understand. And uh... I really don't know how he's gonna deal with all this. I mean him and Amy were... were really close. Well, you're family. That's what he needs right now. The agent will give you all the necessary paperwork. You know, it's just that one suitcase. I... I... wanna get him outta here. Is all this necessary? I'm afraid so, Mr Walker. I'm just gonna say goodbye. Yeah. You ready to go now? (WHISPERING) I don't wanna go with him. You don't wanna go? No! OK. Victims' families keep calling looking for answers. Let's um... Let's see if we can get some footage of the hearses leaving town, people crying. Somebody talking to camera. Hey! You need to take that ad down, RIGHT NOW! Hey, Bill. Was the ad not what you were expecting? You've made me look like some kind of a crap-slinging asshole. That is not me! But you said she scapegoated you. I say a lotta things when I'm pissed off, but not on TV! Mr Ratch. Is there a problem? Yeah, there's a problem. Your son is a cheat and a liar. Please let me apologize on his behalf. Sorry's one thing, but where does that leave me, huh? That British lady has done right by me. I never signed up for this crap. Pfft, he... he signed a waiver. And therefore you can't sue us, or we'll sue you, and on, and on, and on. Listen, Bill. Can I be honest with you? I hate everything about politics. (SNORTS IN DISBELIEF) I would rather be sippin' a Long Island Iced Tea, sittin' on a patio, braggin' about my grandkids. But this state is in the damn crapper and somethin' has to be done, and sometimes that includes mudslingin'. Yeah, well this isn't right. No, but folks like us... you and me, we remember when Michigan was the engine of this country. Right? Everybody had a job, a good job. You could raise a family. There was... There was a future. And we were buildin' it all together. We had pride and... hope. - I remember. - Yeah. That's what I want for my grandkids. Hopes and dreams. Now there's just fear, and dread, and shame. My son goes too far. But he is tryin' to bring us back from the brink. And yeah... He used you to get that done. You shoulda told me what you were doin'! You're absolutely right, Bill. I... I made a mistake and it's not gonna happen again. Deal? Yeah. That's good stuff. Hopes and dreams. Shame. By the end of today, Bill will be a celebrity. He'll forget any of this ever happened. You are a great strategist, Richard, but leave the personal touch to me. (TENSE MUSIC) Kendra, I... - What's this? - It's Lucas' mother's. Boyfriend seems to be more interested in this than Lucas. And I wanna find out why. That's why. - No way! - What is it? Restraining order. Yeah... eh, the SD card... Yeah. Find anything on it? Oh, yeah! A bunch of financial statements, investments, money transfers, that sort of thing. Huge amounts hidden all over the world. Ellen! I have something for you. What's this? Evidence you need to take the cartel down. - The financial records? - Mmm-hmm. - That's amazing! - And it turns out that the man who tipped off the cartel is a friend of Max's. A priest by the name of Emilio. Saint Emilio, from the Carlos tape? How the hell do you know all this? Max stayed in my room last night. And people say the Brits are boring! Look, it is neck on the line if he doesn't show up for the Grand Jury. He told me that he's heading to Chicago. Hah! Yes! Listen, I need a favour from you. A favour? The man who was here for Lucas has a history of domestic abuse. Can you help? Absolutely. Hello. You're the accident investigator? Dominic Hayes. I'm here on behalf of the FTSA. Sergeant Siobhan Boyle. Oh! We spoke on the phone. So that's it, eh? Yeah. It's down there, if you don't mind getting your fancy shoes a bit dirty. So what does a drunk-driving accident in Canada have to do with a train crash in Michigan? I'm not sure that it does, but one of the passengers on board the Apollo may have been murdered. And my DUI fits into that how? Well, he was the last person our victim called. Now they're both dead. Exactly. - You identified the driver? - Name's Connor Tate. 33, no wife, no kids. Sister who lives in town. Connor Tate. And what do you think happened here, Sergeant Boyle? Well, from the absence of skid marks on the road, and Connor's staggeringly high blood-alcohol level I'd say he had a few too many, didn't spot the curve, and just went straight off the road. Mmm-hmm. Did you do a chemical swab? On a routine drunk driver? No, I didn't. And I think my supervising officer would laugh me out of the precinct if I did. Well, let's see if he laughs when you tell him that the brake line has been severed. What?! How? I'm not sure. That's why we need a chemical swab. (CARS HONKING) (CAR HONKING) (TENSE MUSIC BUILDS TO CRESCENDO) (DOOR OPENS) Finally! We all done now? Lucas, Charlotte has got something for you downstairs. Special Agent Ellen Hunter. I'm afraid I can't let you take Lucas. Looks like you have a history of domestic assault in Canada. You can't charge me, Amy's gone. You also have an outstanding drug warrant. Which means Agent Hunter here can arrest you. You're looking at months in the county lockup here just waiting for an extradition order. What happens to the kid, then? He'll get locked up too. There is another option. What's that? We also found $6,000 in Amy's luggage. Yeah, that's mine. She stole it and ran off. Nice try. That woman worked three jobs. You haven't worked in five years. The money's what you really came for, so why don't you just take it and leave the boy. Kid spooks me out anyway. (PHONE RINGING IN DISTANCE) (FOOTSTEPS APPROACHING) The Canadians will pick Brad up at the border. So what are you gonna do with the boy? Want me to call Social Services? (EMPHATIC) No! I mean, he's got family. We just need to find them. By the way, the Financial Crimes Unit in DC is reviewing the data you gave me. - Looks promising. - Glad to hear it. Still no substitute for having O'Neill on the stand. - You'll let me know if he calls. - Yeah, of course. - Hey! - Hi. NEWS REPORT: Following several days of declining share price, Ursa Technologies released a statement today which reads: "Safety has always been Ursa's top priority and we have full confidence that the FTSA will conclude that our automation system played no part in the Apollo derailment." (SIRENS) (TRAFFIC SOUNDS) (SIRENS) Hey! So your instincts may have been right. The deceased's name was Connor Tate. This crash is starting to look less like an accident and more like a severed brake line. We're running some tests now. Well, what's his connection to Phillip Hogan? We're going to interview the sister now. - I'll let you know how it goes. - OK. - You got the address, right? - Yeah. There's an amazing food truck up that way. You up for some pulled pork poutine? I... want to say yes. OK, so who's your favourite team? Maple Leafs. Maple Leafs? Come on! Redwings! Eleven Stanley Cups. One of the original six. Mmm-hmm. Yeah, I mean last time they won the Cup, I was in Sixth Grade. OK, you watch your manners, young lady. - Charlotte? - Oh! I see you got the little fella here. Yeah, I'm trying to find next-of-kin. I found two tickets to San Diego in his mom's bag, so maybe that's where Lucas' grandfather is from. Oh! And I found what might be a picture of him. You try this number? Yep, I got a teenage girl in Madison. No connection. It's an old number. So, male, possible last name Miller in and around San Diego. I'll see if I can scrounge up a list. - Cheers. - Thank you. Listen, Dom called, he said that the last person that Phil Hogan called was a man by the name of Connor Tate. - Let's see if they're connected. - Yeah, sure. - Hey! - Hi. You off to the site? Yeah, checking out the washroom in Car 2 to see if there's any evidence of tampering. Glamorous life of the FTSA! (PHONE RINGING) CAR SYSTEM: "Call from Kendra Malley." - Jordan Cole-- - Yeah. Leave a message and I or my office will get back to you. (BEEP) Eh, Mr. Cole, it's Kendra Malley. I need to ask you a few more questions about Phillip Hogan. There may be another death connected to his. Could you give me a call as soon as possible? Thanks. CAR SYSTEM: "End of message." Ms Tate, thank you for agreeing to meet with me again. Mr Hayes here has some additional questions for you. I'm very sorry about your brother, Ms Tate. Thank you. Can you tell me though, have you ever seen... this man before? No, I don't think so. His name is Phillip Hogan. He was a passenger aboard the Apollo when it crashed. Oh, I've read about that on the news... so awful! Yes, it was. We have reason to believe that Mr Hogan may have been murdered. Your brother was the last person he spoke to. Oh my God! Any idea how they may have known each other? Emm... No, I don't really know Connor's friends. Do you mind uh, just taking another look at this photo? You sure you don't recognize him? I'm sorry. May I ask what your brother did for a living? Perhaps they knew each other through business. He managed the family trust. Well, what's left of it. Were you two close? We were two children of divorce. We used to spy on our parents. Play them off one another. And em... Then they both died. And we grew even closer. (NO SOUND) So he was your stepbrother? Though it never felt like that. Connor was all I had. Emm... now there's no one. Rose, can you think of anyone that may have wanted to hurt your brother? What do you mean? Upon further investigation, it would appear that his crash may not have been an accident. You told me that he was drunk. That he drove off the road. There may have been more to it than that. - That's crazy! - We'll keep you informed, OK? Thank you. Thank you, Ms Tate. Let me show you out. Did she seem scared to you? From the first mention of Phillip Hogan. The police were here - again! For God's sake, tell me what you've done! I think you look into the Tate family trust. See if there's a connection you can make there. Yeah, why's that? Follow the money is a good rule of thumb. Rich people hate getting poor. That mansion hasn't had a reno since the '90s. Let's see what the chemical swab determines. You've got good instincts. Ever thought about putting in for detective? And become a suit? Nah. I think the uniform suits me, don't you? What exactly is this? Cheese curds, fries, gravy. (TRUCK HORN) (SIRENS IN DISTANCE) (FLOOR CREAKS) Max! I... I thought you were dead. But... but the news! You told them I was on the train. You don't understand. You're right. I don't. (SCREAMS) You betrayed Maria! You helped the same person who killed her! They put a gun to my head but I still said nothing. You told them I was on the train, Emilio. I know that for a fact! They even... They even threatened the Church, the congregation, the children... (SIRENS IN DISTANCE) Would Maria have wanted that? (MAX DRAWS A SHARP BREATH THROUGH HIS NOSE) (LONG SIGH) You know, sometimes I wish you'd never introduced us. She loved you. I knew her since we were kids, and I never saw her happy before YOU. And then I-- No! And then Carlos. He was always the source of her pain. We need to stop him. Max, we owe it to her. I'll testify against him. What good would that do with him still in Mexico? What if he wasn't? He's here? He blames you for his sister's death. He's come to kill you himself. Call him. Tell him I'm here. Call him. Bingo! Bingo again. Just got a call from the National Tracing Centre. Both guns were reported stolen from a gun store in New Mexico. This one was found on Hector Sanchez the cartel guy shot at the hospital, and this was the one that killed Walter Mack at the railroad crossing. - Both are cartel? - Little doubt about it. So Walter Mack didn't commit suicide. He was killed by the Matalona? Yeah, probably by this Sanchez guy. And then Sanchez moved Walter's truck onto the tracks to make sure that the train derailed. Then he searches for Max after the crash to make sure that he didn't survive, and kills Phillip Hogan by mistake. Well, maybe Phil Hogan WAS at the wrong place at the wrong time. OK, hold on! Kendra! Something's happened to Theo at the crash site. She's on her way. (RADIO CHATTER) KENDRA: Theo! It's alright. Theo what happened? Are you OK? I was just about to call you, then everything went black. Someone must've gotten me from behind. Mr Ratch found me. Kendra, you were right. The air valve for the emergency brake was severed - that's what triggered the emergency stop. - The window was there too. - You should go to hospital. I'm fine, I'm fine! OK, eh... maybe not. Did you see anyone? I was driving by. I thought I saw flames. You certain you didn't see anything? Look, I thought you were gonna lose your man here. I did what I could. Thank you. THEO: Yeah. THEO: OK. Sounds good. Alright. Copy that? You were right. Chemical swab came back showing traces of nitrate. Nitrate?! What are you thinking? Someone wanted Connor to drive off the road. They would've had to have severed the brake just before the turn. Best way to do that is by remote detonation. (RADIO CHATTER) What is that? My bet is det cord. Do we know where Connor was coming from that night? The pub on Main Street. You think someone tailed him from there? Yeah, then triggered the det cord just before the turn at exactly the right moment. Let's hit the pub then. You read my mind. - Bill Ratch found him?! - Yeah. He said that he saw the fire, then he found Theo. - Said he didn't see anyone. - Do we believe him? I don't know. You realize what this means? - Someone's watching us. - Yeah. And prepared to go to any extent to stop us from finding the truth. Alright. Hi, may I speak to a Mr Miller, please? Sure. - Hey. - Hi! Dr Lopez called. He said Theo was doing well. Ah, that's a relief. Did eh, did Bill Ratch call? (WHISPERS) No. Oh! Hi, Mr. Miller. Hi, do you by chance have a grandson named Lucas? Thanks anyway. - (SIGHS) - No luck? Nope! And I've left a bajillion messages Did you find any connection between Connor Tate and Phillip Hogan? Oh! Well, Phillip Hogan is a high tech whiz. And Connor Tate is a college dropout with a trust fund. I haven't found a connection yet. Well, maybe Jordan Cole's the connective tissue. I'll look into that. Where's Lucas? Out back playing catch with an FBI agent. - Oh, and I'll take him tonight. You've enough on your plate. - You sure? - Yeah, watching cartoons is actually a good night for me. I'm sure time will soon take care of that. Hasn't yet! TV: Many questions surround the horrible crash of the Apollo. Did Jordan Cole buy his way through Senate and FTSA approval of the automation software? Was Phillip Hogan an accidental victim of the crash, or is there corporate espionage at play? Rumours are that Hogan had concerns over developments at Ursa Technologies, and he and Cole had a falling out. The families of 62 dead and 130 victims await these answers while the FTSA and FBI investigate. (PHONE RINGING) Meanwhile, Diana Bright, candidate for Governor of Michigan has stated previously-- (TENSE MUSIC) (PHONE RINGS AND BUZZES) Dom? We caught a break with the CCTV. - I just sent you the footage. - OK, looking now. He was waiting outside of the pub that Connor Tate had been drinking in. We're standing here now. When Tate drove off he followed. Our man is in the jeep. - That looks like him. - Who? The ghost from the train. It's all connected, Dom. We gotta find him. (KNOCKING) Mind if I come in, Bill? Hmm. Why'dya have to come messin' around, Bill? Hmm? You were gonna kill that guy! What business is that of yours? When I saw you before, I remembered. That time in the Legion you askin' questions about how someone could take down the Apollo. I don't recollect that. You son of a bitch. You just... just went ahead and did it?! You've a wild imagination, Bill. 62 people dead. And you used me to do it. There are casualties in every revolution. (POPS LIPS) You lost your job, Bill. That's gotta hurt. The way I see it now, you pretty much have nothing left to live for, do you? Captions were made with the support of NZ On Air.
