Evidence you need to take the cartel down. (ELLEN) The financial records. You told him I was on the train Emilio. I know that for a fact! This crash is starting to look less like an accident and more like a severed brake line. I'm here because we would like you to appear in a campaign ad for us. And who has Bill Ratch been fired by? Who is the woman Governor Martin put in charge of the investigation of this state's worst disaster? You've made me look like a crap-slinging asshole! - You said that she scapegoated you. - I mean, I never signed up for this shit! - Have you ever seen this man before? - No. Ugh! - 62 people dead. You gonna kill me too? - Yeah. (GUNSHOT) - (FOOTSTEPS APPROACH) - He's back in the country. I just got off the phone with border control. Did you get a hold of Bill Ratch? - Still not picking up. - Well, let me know if you want me to lean on the guy. I will do. - (PHONE LINE RINGS AND BEEPS) - (MACHINE) Hello. It's Bill Ratch. Leave a message. Mr Ratch? Mr Ratch? Mr Ratch? (CELL PHONE RINGS) -Hello? -It's Bob. - Where are you? - With Emilio. - Max? Kinda need your help. Carlos Ortega is here in Chicago. What are you gonna do? We're gonna make sure he never kills again. You're telling me we still don't know who this guy is? How hard can it be? He is a white male, 35 to 45 years old, medium build. He knows how to use a det cord. He is trained to evade surveillance, which means he probably has a military background. And he is willing to kill. I don't want one more death on our hands. Check militias, gun clubs, radical groups in the area. We're the FBI; start acting like it. Captions were made with the support of NZ On Air. www.able.co.nz Able 2021. - I'm pulling into Chicago now. - Max has agreed to meet with you. Let's hope he sticks to it. He better! He's gonna get himself killed. You wanted an update on Bill Ratch. He's alive. The bullet missed all vital organs, but he's lost a lot of blood. Ah. Do you know when I can speak with him? Oh, could be days till he's conscious, if he wakes at all. -Was the wound self-inflicted? -Oh, no way to tell. -Sorry. -Sure. (PA) Dr Jones to the second floor. (POLICE RADIO) We're in position. Any sign of him? Nothing so far. Come on. (REPORTER) The recent crash of the Apollo has highlighted an undeniable fact that the world is entering an age of automation unlike anything that's come before. According to recent studies, up to 50% of all jobs in America could be lost to automation in the next two decades. You just got out of hospital. What are you doing here? Look, you really thought I was gonna lie in bed all day? - I did actually, yeah. - Oh, Dom found a connection, uh, to him and det cord. OK, let's call him. -Hey. -Dom, have you been able to ID our ghost? No, not yet. But Sergeant Boyle did find a lead on the det cord used to crash the car. - A local dealer known to sell on the dock here. We're heading there now. - OK. I saw a residue on the emergency-brake pipe before I got knocked out. That sounds like det cord to me. Det cord on the train, det cord on Connor Tate's car. - OK, let us know what you find out. - Will do. Ditched the uniform, did we? Why set alarms off before we even get in the place? I call shotgun. (COUGHS) Max O'Neill. We finally meet. - I had to make sure it was safe. - I'm just sorry you thought we were working for the cartel. I mean, this could've been a whole lot easier. I'm only here cos Kendra said I could trust you. She said the same about you. Guess we should listen to Kendra more often. Emilio called Carlos. -We're meeting in an hour. -Are you sure you're up for this? Cos it could turn bad on you. I mean, I'll do whatever it takes. This could be our only chance. -And the priest? -He needs to make things right. Just get Ortega to talk, and we'll take care of the rest. Keep this on so we can keep track of what's going down. Yeah. (FOOTSTEPS APPROACH) Hello, Rose. You know why I'm here. (SIGHS) (ECHOES) I destroyed my life with one bad decision. My wife, Maria. She... It was my fault. Carlos was never to be trusted. (DOOR OPENS) - (FOOTSTEPS APPROACH) - Are you ready? Yeah. Let's go. -Hello, Max. -Carlos, please. Tsh, tsh, tsh. No pleading. Take him out of here. - No. - (SPEAKS SPANISH) - Please. -Don't hurt him. -The priest? I think I will. He introduced you to my sister. He's gonna pay for that. Maria loved him. Maria had very bad taste in men. Sit. - (SIGHS) - So you, uh, came to kill me yourself, huh? After crashing the train and after your hitman fail? I had nothing to do with that crash. - Carlos. Why would I believe you? - (SCOFFS) I don't care if you believe me, but I'm glad that you survived. -(CHOKES) Now, you're going to pay for Maria. You blame me for her death, but you ` you ordered the bomb. The bomb was for you! Now, you're going to pay for her death with your life. You got all that? - Shoot him! Shoot him now! - FBI, drop the gun. Drop it! Drop the gun! Max! Max. Get the gun! I've got this. Gimme the knife. Gimme the knife. Max? Give it to me. Hands on your head, Ortega. On your head! I will not hesitate. I've been waiting too long for this. Move it. Move! Cuff him. -Are you all right? -(SIGHS) Yeah. You? Someone's looking out for us. -(PHONE LINE RINGS) -Ellen. Ortega is in custody. We got him on tape admitting to Maria's murder. That's great news. Is Max all right? Why don't you ask him yourself? Can't believe it's finally over. But Kendra, Carlos denies crashing the train. - Well, why would he tell the truth? - He was about to kill me. Why would he lie? Yeah, why would he lie? - Can you believe it? - They say he's from around here. I'll put these on your tab. - I'm sorry to hear about Bill Ratch. - What happened to Ratch? Well, they say it was his gun in his hand. -He took his own life? -He's still hanging on. This world. Thank you for everything. Oh. You're welcome. Well, you sure don't make things easy. Had me running, man. Hi, you two. How did it go last night? -The kid says I snore. -Lucas? Lucas, what is it? I saw that man. He killed someone! Do you think you could show me where? It's OK. It's OK. - (PHONE LINE RINGS) - He's here. He knows everything. I don't know what to do. - No! You don't know him like I do. - Rose! Watch your step. You sure you wanna do this? Should the boy be here, after all he's been through? He thinks that he may have seen our mystery man kill Hogan. (ECHOES) It's done. That grave was dug years ago. So, what's next? Years of therapy, I suppose. Hopefully not. (ECHOES) She's pretty huh? Too late! She's mine. - (ECHOES) San Diego looks amazing. - I liked the Baja. This place where you can see the baby turtles hatch. -(PEOPLE SCREAMING) -Mom! -I was looking for my mom. -(ECHOES) Mom! A pick-up truck. A man came out of it. He was talking to the man in the picture. What did the two men do? - There was a fight. They killed someone. - And then what happened? The man in the picture ran to the train. He ran from there... to there. Here? Yeah. The brake valve. You checked the valve the morning after the crash, right? Absolutely, it was in open position just as it is now. Well, maybe the two men turned the valve from closed to open after the crash. They'd have covered up the real reason the Apollo left the tracks. Why? Why wreck a train, and then go to all that trouble covering up how? Perhaps they wanted us to come to a different conclusion, one that would put the blame elsewhere. Lucas, do you remember what the other men looked like? Did you hear anything that they said? Hey, you've done really well, OK? Thank you. Yeah. Come on, buddy ` let's go. Come on. - (PEOPLE SCREAM) - (CRASH ECHOES) (EXPLOSION) That cord burst at about 30,000ft per second. Oh. Cuts like a knife. This is just a taste what this stuff can do. - Looks pretty dangerous. - It's against regulation for you to be here without safety glasses. OK, guys, go ahead. Please take a look. Pardon me for a sec. Thank you. - What can I do for you? - Well, I heard a rumour you're the guy to talk to about buying det cord. Yeah, that's funny. I heard that too. Buy online, get shipped direct. You think I jeapordise my whole business just for a few extra bucks? Yeah, I do. Do you? - You two cops? - Do I look like a cop? - You sure talk like one. Thank you. I think? Listen, Peter, we're not here to take down your little empire, but we will if we have to. We just need some information. -And what's that? -The names of your US clients. - I can't believe he saw what he saw. - Yeah, and kept it a secret. What about his mom's cell phone? She's gotta have someone who knows his grandpa or some family or something. There's a handful of contacts, but I checked. They're all friends of Brad's. Don't worry. We'll figure it out. Um... Hey, uh, Lucas. So, um... Hey, bud. Listen, Lucas. I'm really sorry about what happened to you. And I know what it's like to live with someone like Brad. Don't worry. We're gonna find your grandpa. OK? I promise. All right, let's do it. Got your stick? Back to work. Wanna shortcut? OK, race me! Governor Martin was on the move today in Dearborn, as he tries to keep his lead in the polls. - His pro-Apollo stance has left some voters in doubt. - (MAN SPEAKS IN BACKGROUND OVER TV) Yeah, we have the money. Spend it. -You heard? -About Bill? Tried to kill himself, yeah. We're gonna recut the commercial, redo the voiceover, double down on the whole 'foreign investigator pushes good American man to suicide'. Or we did! Diana, there's two days to go in this campaign, and we are two points behind. Look, if you think the new ad is too much, then I can pull it. Pick up his medical costs, and if he dies, God forbid, we'll pay for the funeral. (SIGHS) How long you need it? I won't be long. (CELTIC PUNK ROCK MUSIC) # Chip went straight to work # He'd get rid of the rat # And there would no' be a problem # And he bit him in the eye # A lemon grows a pip # A yard will build a ship # A lemon grows a-bitter and I'll get you, Chip... # Mate! I thought you were just picking up a table. Live the Ranger life with the new Ford Ranger Wildtrak X. (CHATTER) All right. All right! All right, go back to work. Lots of work to do. Congratulations. - Wouldn't have happened without you. Pretty sure I owe you one now. - You still sticking around? Like I said, I wanna catch these bastards. I don't know who they are, but I know how they crashed the train. OK, Theo. -Ready? -Yeah. So, this is the man that we're calling the ghost. Boarded the train in Detroit, he avoided security cameras, and then entered the washroom outside car 2. Once inside, he removed the window, and then he accessed the emergency brake that runs through a panel in the wall. (KNOCKING) He used det cord which severed the emergency-brake line. When the train stopped, he climbed out of the window, where he was briefly spotted by a passenger. He waited for the train operator to reset the brakes, and then he turned the lever back to the closed position, disabling the brakes and assuring that the Apollo would crash when it hits the curve. But what then? I mean, he's not gonna get back on the train, knowing it's a death-trap. Exactly. I suspect that he had a vehicle waiting for him. He continued on the crossing, and then he turned the brake lever to the open position, making it appear that the brakes functioned. Well, why the truck at the tracks if they knew the train was gonna derail anyway? And who killed the truck driver? Couldn't have been the same guy. No. Whoever did this wanted us to blame the train. My money is on the cartel hitman. He's your second man. (LOW CHATTER) -Kendra? -Yeah? -I found something. -Sure. (MAN) Mr Cole. How was your visit to Canada, sir? Productive. I'm heading back to Michigan now. OK, so check it out. I found... this. Phillip Hogan and Jordan Cole, right? Oh, one minute. Who's the young lady? Well, SHE is the interesting part. That is Rose Tate. - Connor Tate's sister? - Mm-hm. She was some sort of, like, super-genius. The three of them won a robotics engineering award in college. Yeah, Jordan Cole told me that him and Hogan started URSA in school. Well, maybe there were more people involved. I mean, Rose and Connor's father, John Tate, he's, like, an angel investor. He put tons of money into various different innovations. -Did he put money into URSA? -I dunno. I could look into it? Please do. Thanks, Charlotte. -(PHONE LINE RINGS, BEEPS) -KENDRA: Yeah, Dom? Hey. We tracked down the det cord supplier and we managed to snag his US client list. OK, hang on. Let me put you on speaker. Any in Michigan? Yes, four addresses in your area. Closest is a Tom Hazel. Just outside Jackson. OK, we're just looking. - No, that's not our mystery man. - He doesn't seem to have a criminal record either. Well, could he be the middle man between the explosives dealer and our saboteur? -We'll go check him out. -OK. Oh, yeah, listen, Dom. When you interviewed Rose Tate, did she mention anything to you about knowing Phillip Hogan? No, she actually denied knowing him. Yeah? Well she's telling porkies. Can you find out why? - Telling what? - Oh, sorry, porkies. It's British rhyming slang for porkie pies, lies. - Right. - I knew it. She flinched when we mentioned his name. See? Good instincts. -Where do you think you're going? -With you. -No, no. This is the police part. -And part of my investigation. Look, we've been down this road before. Yup, and we've decided we're better together. Look, this isn't my first rodeo, OK? You follow my instruction to the letter, right? -Yep! -And wear a vest. (MAN ON RADIO) Copy that. Any further precise location on suspect's trailer? (WOMAN ON RADIO) Residency records supplied by park-owner incomplete. This is the location. All right, we're gonna split up. Go door to door. Move fast and quiet. No, you stay here. I will let you know if we find anything. You're not wearing the vest. No. Are you wearing the vest? (RADIO) It goes far, as far back as the Industrial Revolution, right? They were finding ways to take freedom from ordinary people. Get them... (RADIO CONTINUES IN BACKGROUND) (RADIO) They organised. They started realising what was going on, that they were being enslaved, that tyranny was upon them. Mobile arms had to come up with something new. They came up with the internet. Fast way of spreading mass propaganda,... replacing workers with robots in order to keep them impoverished, relying on government handouts to exist. This is something that throughout history, those keeping us from finding out control have to adapt and find new ways to stop the revolution that IS coming. I promise you that. (RADIO FADES) How are you? Uh, I was, uh... -I was looking for a Tom Hazel? -Oh yeah? -Yeah, what do you need with him? -Just a few questions. But I can come back another time ` it's no problem. Oh. It's too late for that now. (BANGING ON DOOR, GRUNTING) (AXE CRASHES ON DOOR) Ellen! Ellen! -Shit! -Ellen! Go! - Come on, come on! - Ellen! - Go, go! Brick! Down, FBI! Kendra?! Kendra?! Are you OK? - Are you OK? - Yeah. OK, you're OK. Did you-- Did you get him? No. (GASPS) (AIRCRAFT FLIES OVERHEAD) (CLEARS THROAT) -Are you sure you're all right? -Yeah, good. -This coulda cost you your life. -I'm fine. What did you find? His name is Tyler Brick. He was laid off from the railyard years ago, and guess who his supervisor is. -Bill Ratch? -Before that, he was in the military. Makes sense. Special Agent Hunter. I think you'll wanna see what's inside. That's the schematic for the Apollo. That's Phillip Hogan. That's Hogan's seat. Which means that he was the target, not Max. All right, you guys fan out, join the search. -Let's find this guy, let's move. -What's this? "We are all temples made of cold bones "and warm ashes. Our only value is in "our use by giving action to an idea do we deserve." There is no answer. Only choices. To feel guilt is an escape. If God speaks, it is with my own voice. And if he acts, it is with my own hands. (CELL PHONE RINGS) -Hi. I'm on my way back. -Hey, Kendra. So, Charlotte's been digging into Jordan Cole's company. I found all this stuff about the underlying patent. Yeah, the patent for the automation software that runs the train. - And? - It's governed by this thing called The Joint-Holding Agreement. Which basically means that if one of the patent holders dies, their shares get distributed amongst the others. - Which means whoever holds the final patent inherits the whole thing. - And who are the patent holders? Jordan Cole, Phillip Hogan, Rose and Connor Tate. It's gonna be, like, worth a kajillion dollars in 10 years. Yeah, and the same software is gonna be used in automated cars, planes ` everything. Right. So with Phillip Hogan and Connor Tate dead, the only person standing in between Jordan Cole and complete ownership of the patent... - Is Rose Tate. - All right, I'm on my way back. It's open. Hello? Rose, it's Sergeant Boyle! Rose, you in here? Rose? Rose? Call the ambulance! (CELL PHONE RINGS) -Did you find her? -I did. She was unconscious. With her wrists cut. Looks like suicide. - Or someone wants it to look like suicide. - Could be. I'll call you later. - (WOMAN) Over here, through the trees! - (MAN SPEAKING LOUDLY) (HELICOPTER OVERHEAD) - Hey, no news on Brick, but you-- - I need to know where Jordan Cole is. -Can you track his phone? -Why? - I think he may have something to do with all this. - The crashing of his own train? I know it sounds ridiculous, but all the evidence is pointing that way. OK, I'll see what I can do. But make no mistake, what we're witnessing here is investigative cancel culture. You haven't seen it yet. You must get this crap at home. I get this crap everywhere. Mm-hm. - I think I'll pay Mr Bright a visit. - OK. Thanks. (SONG PLAYS THROUGH SPEAKERS) Why does it feel like everyone's staring at us and pretending not to? (SIGHS) The new campaign ad. Never thought I'd need a bodyguard when I became a crash investigator. Hmm. Why did you, become a crash investigator? Oh, uh, well, actually, I originally wanted to be a fighter pilot. - (LAUGHS) - Really? - Yeah. Yeah. My parents were worried about the risks, so I did a bunch of research, and the more I looked into it, - the more I realised I was fascinated by crashes. - Hmm. - I could see you as a fighter pilot. - Are you serious? - Sure. Got you some fries while you wait for that takeout. What do you say, Lucas? You like that? That is our football team. - But between you and me, they're not very good. - (LAUGHS) All right, buddy? - Any luck finding his family? - We're still trying. Keep the energy up. Keep going. OK, thanks a lot. Ah, Mr Bright. Excuse me. Miss Malley. Welcome. Thank you. The man who I have to thank for becoming a celebrity in this town. - Oh, don't take that ad personally. - Don't take it personally? How should I take it? I mean, all this attention is just incredibly flattering, Mr Bright. -Look, that's just politics. -Politics. I'm sure someone as smart as you can understand that. No, actually, I don't understand. I don't understand how you can exploit a man's possible suicide attempt for the benefit of your campaign. We're in the process of setting up a fundraising site on Mr Ratch's behalf. Well, your kindness is simply overwhelming. And tell me ` can I contribute to this or would that lose you votes? You could always do it anonymously. Like mother, like son, huh? (TELEPHONE RINGS IN BACKGROUND) (ECHOES) A simple movement of my flesh causes a reaction. That action is its own meaning. Its own currency. - (CELL PHONE RINGS) - (ECHOES) It has no greater meaning than its doing. - I'm ready. Where are you? - (DISTORTED VOICE) Car's waiting for you down the road. It's time to cut the head off the snake. (ECHOES) Man must act knowing there is no answer, no true judge of right and wrong, only choices. And actions. And consequences. (ECHOES) To tremble at another man's fears is weakness. It is a judgement all its own. It makes a damnation of this Earth. Makes a hellfire of our bones. If God speaks, it is with my own voice. And if he acts, it is with my own hands. -Oh wait! I've got the keys! -I'll let him in. - Dude! Ugh. - (LAUGHS) - You think he's gonna be all right? - Yeah, he'll be fine. He's a little fighter. Takes one to know one, eh? Hey, I saw you talking to that campaign guy when I came out of the diner. -Yeah. -Yeah. - Let me know if you ever need backup. I'm pretty scrappy. - I will do. -Night. -Night. Mm-hm. Yeah. Sorry, Mr Miller. Have a good night. Thank you. Thank you for your help. Thank you. Ugh. Oh! -Hey. -Hey. Search isn't going so well, huh? No, apparently, there are a lot of Mr Millers in San Diego, so... Do you want me to take a page? I can start making some phone calls. Uh, yeah, sure. Uh, hi. Laurence Miller? Is this Mr--? No? Hey, um, hello. I'm looking for a... John Miller. Johnson? (PHONE RINGS) Dom. What did you find? We got the security footage off the doorbell cam. Jordan Cole leaving the house. Uh, I'll call you straight back. (RADIO) Every time a politician, a Mayoral candidate, a gubernatorial candidate, a senatorial candidate, whatever. They always... (KNOCKING) -(KNOCKING) -Dom just called. Jordan Cole was at Rose Tate's just before they found her. We tracked him across from the Canadian border. -He's on his way here. -OK, let's call him. -(CLEARS THROAT) -(PHONE LINE RINGS) -(PHONE LINE CLICKS) -Miss Malley. I was just about to call you. - Mr Cole, I have to let you know I have Agent Hunter with me. - The FBI? Just wanna ask you a few questions, Mr Cole. - Were you in Toronto earlier today visiting Rose Tate? - Why are you asking? (RADIO) You have high-speed trains buzzing. You can get from here to here in an hour and a half. You know, yeah, it's impressive, but... You don't understand. Travelling from here to there. I didn't meet anyone. I didn't run into a soul! When I had a problem... We do know about the patent, Mr Cole, and that the last person alive stands to inherit it all. Which we think is you. Look, I turned them down, and this is what happened. They backed out in the beginning, and they wanted back in. -Who wanted back in? -Look, you have to-- - (GUNSHOT) - (CAR HORN HONKS) - Mr Cole? Mr Cole, can you hear me? -(CAR HORN HONKS) -Jordan?! - Jordan, are you OK? - (CAR HORN HONKS) (CAR HORN HONKS) (CAR HORN STOPS) Captions were made with the support of NZ On Air.
