You made me look like a crap slinging asshole that's not me! You said she scapegoated you, right? I don't understand how you can exploit a man's suicide attempt for the benefit of your campaign! This is the man we're calling The Ghost. When the train stopped, he climbed out the window then he rendezvoused with a second man. LUCAS: He killed someone. (SHRIEKS) This one was found on Hector Sanchez and this one killed Walter Mack at the railroad crossing. -Both are cartel? -No doubt about it. The only person standing between Jordan Cole and ownership of the patent is Rose Tate. The decision's made, there's nothing to talk about. Call EMS! The man to thank for becoming a celebrity here. Don't take that ad personally. How should I take it? -They backed out then came back. -Who? (GUNSHOT) Captions were made with the support of NZ On Air. www.able.co.nz Able 2021 REPORTER: Details are scarce at this hour but sources have confirmed that Jordan Cole was discovered in his vehicle with a gunshot wound. Police are investigating a potential homicide. Cole was one of the world's luminaries of groundbreaking advance technology and his now famous signature talk of 2018 has gone viral. Now more than ever in our history, we need to move faster, change quicker. COLE: Find solutions that will sustain our way of life as we move forward. Our children will travel by hyper loop. Their children will travel through space. These aren't fantasies. REPORTER: Jordan Cole made little comment in the wake of the accident and his software is a primary suspect-- No witnesses to Cole's death. A military style weapon. They must've been lying in wait. Sounds like Tyler Brick. We've put up a wide perimeter. We'll get him. Thought I saw someone outside the train when we stopped. That's Hogan's seat which means he was the target. So Walter Mack didn't commit suicide, he was killed. REPORTER: Today, the world mourns the loss of a great technological genius. A leader in the global economy, URSA CEO-- -Gunned down on the highway. -It's awful! Just tragic. Well, you hated everything the man stood for. Yeah but I defend his right to have that opinion. That's what America used to be about. (SCOFFS) I want those days back. (NEWS REPORTER CONTINUES) We got a pick up truck reported stolen 20 miles from where Jordan Cole was shot. I'm sending you the details now. Put out an APB on the vehicle, check CCTV and traffic cameras in a 40 mile radius. I want this vehicle found, understand? (WATER SPLASHES) (PHONE RINGS) Dom, have you spoken to Rose? Boyle is checking on her now. But we accessed her phone. She texted her brother Conor minutes before he left the pub saying to come home, she needed to speak to him right away. That's odd. -Yeah. What's up? Nurse said the sedative should wear off in an hour or two. I'll call when she wakes up. Thanks, Dom. RADIO: Eagle has eyes on suspect. Highway 4A. This is McCullogh. Suspect just passed me heading to roadblock. -I'm on my way. -(SIRENS BLARE) OFFICER: Out of the car! SHERIFF: Hands in the air! (SHOTS FIRED) SHERIFF: Drop your weapon! Suspect down. Weapon was bought at a gun show, car was stolen, passport was forged, there's no fingerprints on anything. Is there nothing else to link him to whoever else is involved? No. I'll let you know if that changes. KENDRA: OK. Sorry, I know you wanted to take him in alive. Guys like this want to go out in a blaze of glory. -This one right here. -Yeah. Oh, Kendra. Hey bud, can you move up? What have you got? This is Rose Tate's social media account from back in college. It's mostly articles on engineering, algorithms, high-speed automation. Then we found this. -That hashtag on every post. -American Fab Four? Yeah. We've seen pictures of Jordan, Rose and Phil together. Who's the fourth? I've searched but there's no trace. THEO: It can't be Conor, because he dropped out of his local college. Those spires in the background, where is that? They all went to Cambridge University. In England, yeah. When Cole called he said there was another person who felt pushed out and wanted back in. Now that he's dead, Rose might be the only one who can tell us anything. So, who's the fourth person? How long is it to fly to Toronto? An hour away on a plane. -OK, book me a flight, yeah? -Uh, OK! She's coming around. I'm gonna make a pot of coffee. Great, Kendra's on her way. She's gonna do the interview. It's kinda like meeting Sherlock Holmes herself. I'm not sure I'd say that to her. OK, Watson, whatever you say. (DIAL TONE) Kendra, oh what a pleasant surprise! Howard, I hope it's not too late. Oh no. At my age, sleep overtakes you in the day and deserts you at night. By the way, did you check the trainspotters? Was it useful? Yeah, thank you. I should've sent you a note. I was wondering if you could help me with something else. It would be such a pleasure. How are your contacts at Cambridge? Well my name is not exactly sterling as it once was. But what do you need? I'll get Theo to send you something over. And Howard, erm. Yes? I'll, erm, I'll let you, just let me know what you find, yeah? Thanks, bye, bye. REPORTER: Polling stations have been busy today across Michigan. Governor Martin and Diana Bright made final appearances yesterday with Ms. Bright taking the chance to talk about Jordan Cole's murder. I want to offer my condolences to the family of Jordan Cole. He was a brilliant man who made immense contributions to his field. He and I had very different visions of the future. I see a future where people still have values and I think the voters of Michigan prefer my vision. (KNOCKS ON DOOR) -Rose, this is Kendra Malley. -Hi. How are you doing? I'm, uh, I'm the lead investigator in the Apollo crash. I don't know anything about that. Don't you? Sixty-two people died in that crash. I'm sure you know that much. Rose, I know you knew Jordan Cole and Philip Hogan from your college days. I also know how integral your work was to the development of the Apollo's automation software. That was a long time ago. I had a breakdown in college. I dropped out and put it all behind me. Sorry to hear that. Jordan told me that there was someone else involved in the development of the patent and that someone felt pushed out and wanted back in. Who was that? Why don't you just ask Jordan? You haven't heard? I'm sorry to tell you this but Jordan Cole was killed last night. No. He was on his way to see me to tell me everything that you knew. -We have to go to the FBI. -No way they'll believe us. -We'll convince them. -I don't think I can do it. You'll kill us if you don't. I told Jordan I'd go to the FBI. I was too afraid. KENDRA: Rose. Rose, for the victims' families, you need to tell me everything you know. I tried to get them to cut him back in but he attacked them. He wouldn't listen to me. I thought he loved me. I didn't care about the money. I would have given them anything. Who? I've decided we're not selling. But Conor, you said we would. He's trying to rip you off, Rose. -I'm not scared of his threats. -Rose. If he gets his hands on our patent, he knows his share will be worth billions. Short of a catastrophe they'll be worth even more. Are you gonna keep letting them push you around? She's got no choice and neither do you. There is always a choice. Rose, I need to give the victims' families answers. You need to tell me, who is he? I can't. (PHONE RINGS) -Did she give you a name? -Not exactly. Yeah, Howard. Did you find anything? I'm not sure. There was a student at Cambridge at the same time. Belonged to the same engineering society as Cole and the others, but he was expelled halfway through his first year. Seems his mother made a hefty donation to keep the matter hush-hush. Was his name Richard Bright? Sometimes I wonder why I put in the effort. Thanks, Jill. No, no, no that's great news. OK. People are turning out in droves to vote. -Exit polls? -They look good! Yes! Yes! I told you! Come from behind kid. I couldn't have done this without you, you know that? Oh, I know. Without me you'd have lost by a landslide. Oh, you smart ass! It sounds ridiculous but all the evidence points that way. We're going to accuse the next governor of Michigan's son of mass murder? And all we have is the word of a woman implicated in her brother's death. It just gets better and better. Do you think she's trustworthy? Yeah. Yeah, I do. OK, well bring her in and let her make a statement. She won't go public, not with her corroborating evidence of Richard's guilt. -How do we get that? -Not sure but I'm working on it. Kendra! -Yeah? Sorry to interrupt but I thought you'd wanna know we found Lucas' grandpa. He's on the phone with him now. He's coming to get him. That's great news. I know half of you here thought you'd backed the wrong pony... (LAUGHTER) ..for a bit there. But it looks like we're gonna pull through! (APPLAUSE) DIANA: So, now what? We are in for the fight of our lives. This state, this country is in tatters. The tail is wagging the dog, as my husband used to say. Where is the dog? I saw him packing for the governor's house. Ah, my son Richard. Come here, come here. I don't know how many of you know this but Richard turned his back on fame and fortune and put his considerable energies into this family business and ensuring jobs. -Say a few words, Richard. -A few words, Richard. He inherited his father's sense of humour. And his desire to win at all costs. No, he is his own man, my son and I am... ..so proud of the sacrifices he has made to ensure that this family and this state pull through. To Richard. To Richard. ALL: To Richard. -That's quite enough. Excuse me. -(APPLAUSE) Boys are always embarrassed by their mothers. It's our job! Thanks for coming. It's been fantastic. We're gonna make it! (CHATTER) -Rose. -Hello, Richard. What are you doing here? I thought you'd be happy to see me. Everyone else is gone. I've decided to sell. DIANE: Richard. -So, who's this? -Hi, I'm Rose. Well, it's a pleasure. Diana, Rose is an old school chum of mine. I was just in the area and heard the news. I wanted to congratulate you in person. (LAUGHS) Well the polls aren't closed yet so let's not jinx it. But thank you, yes. Don't just stand there, Richard. Get Rose a drink. Be right back. Champagne, right? Rose, were you and Richard a thing back in school? (SCOFFS) That was a long time ago. Well, never say never. Someone's gotta lock him down one day. -(LAUGHS) -SECURITY: (CLEARS THROAT) Oh, I need to take this. -Excuse me. He'll be right back. -OK. Are you gonna keep letting them push you around? COLE: We have to go to the FBI. He'll kill us if you don't. You look lovely. You always were half crazy. Half? I just want this to be over and then I need to disappear. Maybe I should come with you. You don't have to pretend like you care about me, Richard. Why do you think I'm pretending? You were never against me. They left you no choice, I get that. They pushed you into it. It's good to see you. Come here. Just gotta check you're not wearing a wire. But you wouldn't do that to me, would you? She gets in trouble, we'll move in, don't worry. You used to trust me. Yeah, I guess I did. What is this? Jordan wanted me to go to the FBI but I couldn't do it. And then Conor died. You wouldn't turn on me? I understand why you might've killed the others. All that money. But why crash the train? Have you seen the price of URSA's stock lately? After that tragic train crash, it really took a nose dive. And since the death of the almighty Jordan Cole, it's down again. I'm gonna buy a controlling stake and I'm gonna buy it for peanuts. And it'll be mine. Money I make from the patent will fuel generations. Does that make sense? Alright, let's go. Sign this and it'll all be over. Everybody, don't move! HUNTER: Stay where you are! What the hell is going on? What are you doing here? -We're here for your son. You bitch. Don't move! Hands in the air. Step away, Rose. Well, it's the brilliant foreign investigator using a mentally deranged woman to trap me. I think an American would've caught me faster. I'm sure you do. Who was working with you? We know you couldn't have co-ordinated this on your own. Richard, don't say another word. Who was working with you? I think my mother's probably right. -How are you? -Yeah, good. Rose, the police may question you about your part in your brother's death. And I'll tell the truth. Richard told me he wanted to meet Conor to discuss a new deal. I never should've helped Richard. Even though I had no idea what he planned to do. Your co-operation today should help with your case. Seeing Richard go to prison... ..will bring closure for some of the families. I'll figure out where to go from there. (FOOTSTEPS APPROACH) DOM: Excuse me, Rose. The car for the airport is waiting. -Take care. -Thanks. Any luck finding that second man? -Nope. -Well you'll get him. I'll try. Dom, thanks for coming to help. Listen... ..the other night outside the motel. I wasn't, erm, I wasn't sure-- Max was hiding in my room. Ah, well. It was not like that. -I told him you could help. -Of course, always. See you on the other side of the pond. See ya. What's up? Bright is lawyered to the hilt. He won't talk and won't name our second man. But one man might. -How are you feeling? -Erm, yeah. To tell the truth, I'm surprised they discharged you. I just pulled the tubes and walked. I hate hospitals. Look... ..I know we had our differences and I might've said some things that were out of line but... ..I didn't know what Richard Bright was gonna do with that ad and I'm sorry. It's OK. You're here about Brick. (SIGHS) They screwed you when they let you go. Me and about a thousand other guys. You're a veteran, you fought for this country. Not for this country, brother. The one it used to be, that was the country. Exactly. You know, if people, people just lost trust in that train. Mm-hmm. The train crashed. That computer wouldn't let the train crash. The computer can't control everything. Real humans still got one job. What's that? He got stuff out of me that I shouldn't have been talking about. Opposable thumbs. Still need opposable thumbs for the brakes. (LAUGHS) The train takes off with the brake lever closed, there's nothing the computer can do about that. Man, I gotta see a man about a dog. -And the tanker at the crossing? -No, no. It must have been his idea. I've got a target. KENDRA: It all boils down to the truck on the crossing and who knew what. The driver that was shot and his tanker left on the rails was a cover up for the brakes being tampered with. The man's daughter committed suicide at that crossing so no one would question a suicide or think that he'd been shot beforehand. Which makes it unlikely that Richard Bright or Tyler Brick would've known the story of the daughter's death. So, our second man is local? How can it be when the gun when the gun used to shoot the driver is linked to the cartel? Well what if it isn't? You know, it might be a couple hours before he gets here, right? (VEHICLE APPROACHES) Is that him? Lucas thought you were his Grandpa. He's coming to get him today. SHERIFF: Sorry to disappoint, it's just me. My cruiser's in the shop as it got all shot up. Charlotte, Lucas' grandpa's on the phone and wants to talk to you. His car broke down. He's safe but he's gonna be a bit longer. Uh, OK. Can you watch him for a sec? Sure thing. What are you looking at? You like pick-up trucks? It was you. It was you. Hey listen, pal. You heard what the man said, right? About your grandpa being late. I think you and me should get in my pick-up truck and go find him, as you don't want him leaving without you, do you? Huh? Right, pal? Let's go. Lucas, come back here! HUNTER: Thank you. Apparently the gun that killed Mack wasn't linked to the cartel. It was bought at a gun show in Detroit just like the one I found on Brick. Both guns were reported stolen from a store in New Mexico. -Both are cartel? -Little doubt about it. My money's on the cartel hitman. He's your second man. -He lied. -The son of a bitch! Lucas! Hey, sheriff! Lucas?! He left work an hour ago, he's on his way here. -CHARLOTTE: Kendra! -Yeah? Have you seen Lucas? I left him with the sheriff, now they're gone. What? SHERIFF: Come back, buddy! SHERIFF: Lucas, I just wanna talk to you. (PHONE RINGS) -Lucas! -(PHONE RINGS) Come on! (PHONE RINGS) No, he's not picking up. You can't run, pal! That was your grandpa on the phone, Lucas! He wants me to take you to him. There must be a way to track them. Walkie-talkies. Walkie-talkies. -The sheriff probably has one. -Yes. -Charlotte, get the RDF. -Erm. I just wanna talk, pal. I'm not gonna hurt you. -Have you got the police? -I'm sending it. OK, on. OK, OK. Here it is. I'm picking up 2 signals. One on Main Street and the other is-- Crash site. Lucas! Lucas. I know you're in here so just come out. I just wanna take you to your grandpa. I don't want you to get in trouble. I can hear you! You don't want to get into trouble, do you? Lucas! I'm getting kinda sick of this, buddy. SHERIFF: Stop, both of you! Right there! KENDRA: I won't let you hurt him. I don't think you have a choice. This is pointless. The FBI know everything. Just let him go. I think we both know I can't do that. -Please. -You trying to boss me around? You're not my boss Ms. Malley and I'm getting sick of it. HUNTER: Drop your weapon! Hands in the air! You wanna go down in a blaze of glory, sheriff? Come on, try me. That's how you protect and serve? How much did Bright pay you? -It wasn't about money. -No? What was it about then? You like living in this world with machines, automation, computers, robots taking jobs? You know, ten million truckers are gonna be out of work? Ten million families going hungry because of Jordan Cole wants to make a few more billion dollars? I don't know where you're from, but that's not an America I wanna live in. That's how Bright sold you the idea? That killing all these innocent people was for a noble cause? Hm? Something like that. HUNTER: You have the right to remain silent. It's OK. It is with a heavy heart... ..that I tender my resignation as governor-elect of this great state. But after much deliberation and consulting with family and friends, I have decided that it is best that I step down. REPORTER: Is your son guilty? My son is my son... ..no matter what and I need to be by his side now. But I am... ..I am so sorry... ..for the pain and the loss. -Hi! -Be right there. Sure. One Dinty Moore to go. Told you you'd like em. -Thank you. -No. This town will never forget. Mary. I went to the train station and they said you'd gone. I wanted to thank you for telling the truth about Walt. Knowing he didn't do that to all those people. And he didn't take his own life. Thank you. You will find a way to move on, Mary, in time. We all do. So, two weeks off. What are you gonna do? Well, I'm thinking of doing some research on automated flight technology. Yeah, way to the future. You know how to live. Yeah. Um, what are you doing? I'm going to stay at my aunt's shack on the beach and eat potato chips for 2 weeks. Really? I'm kidding. -Oh. -You think I'd take time off? I'm gonna be researching. I have so much to learn. Uh, well, and no pressure but if you wanted, erm, maybe we could meet up and share notes. Like study buddies? Yeah. I think you're moving too fast. You have my number. So, I just got off the phone with the attorney general and I told them it was a team effort with the FTSA. -That's very generous of you. -No, that's an understatement. Expect a call from the secretary of transportation. -I think he'll offer you a job. -He just did. And? -And I'm considering but I also told him I want you on my team. Seriously? Seriously! I think you'd make a great addition, Ellen. Huh. Well, you are full of surprises, Ms. Malley. Look, I'll see you in Washington. -Maybe. -Thanks, Ellen. -Uh, Kendra. -Yes? -He's here. -OK. Lucas. Hey. It's time to go. Lucas! It's OK. Will I see you again? Absolutely. And you take care of yourself, alright? Stay strong. Bye. Grandpa! Thank you. Bye Theo, bye Charlotte, bye Kendra. Bye, bye! (ENGINE STARTS) That's it, we're all packed. When are you coming to the office? Does everyone know I've been offered a job? -Uh, pretty sure. -Everyone I know anyway. OK, well then I'll tell you when I've decided. Gonna take a couple weeks off to think things through. For sure. You'll like the office. It's big! (ENGINE STARTS) -You'll like director Irwin. -KENDRA: Why's that? He's analytical. Asks lots of questions. Much like you. Well, wait a minute. Did you-- Get you the job? No, no. You earned this. Howard. When you called before, why didn't you mention your illness? Well, when you're close to the end, the things you thought were important turn out to not be important in the least. In the end, all that matters... ..are the people that you cared for. And the lives you affected. Kendra... ..you were the closest... ..to a family... ..I ever had. And I betrayed your trust. Thank you. You know, Howard, you'll always be a part of me. If I'm any good at what I do, it's, it's thanks to you and for that I'll always be grateful. Yes. Goodbye, Howard. Bye, soldier.
