The Māori language started to re-shape the national story of New Zealand, and led to new indigenous social and political forces. In 2005 the Hui Taumata generation came of age.
Māori language and values informed the creative approach the tribes brought to their economic development. The arts provided the early signs that Māori potential is local, international, and eternal.
In the late 20th century a new cycle of 'greed is good' economics raised inequalities between rich and poor. Growing Māori unemployment led to poverty. New leadership and heroes are sought and found to give courage to the Māori fight for survival.
